New Broom
On her first day in office the new lady mayor, Pepita Gutiérrez, announced that she was preparing drastic measures to crack down on the amount of prostitution, unlicensed sellers and “illegal PRs†who hand out tickets for the various clubs and discotheques, and she has remained true to her word. In just over a week the Local Police have acted in 300 separate cases where sex was on offer on the streets, 50 in the case of publicity being handed out in unlawful places, and almost 100 against the “looky-looky†men. Amazingly in that week more incidences occurred with prostitutes than in the whole of 2009, 15, and the first seven months of 2010, which was 32.
During the election campaign, Gutiérrez received repeated complaints from the towns-people about these three factors, and she has appointed Xicu Cardona to collaborate with the police force and he went as far as to join a patrol in order to better understand the problems that the law-enforcers have to face on a daily basis. Cardona explained that these “ladies of the night†do offer sexual favours, but in many cases it is just a cover-up to steal holidaymakers belongings, as while one is keeping the victim occupied, others take the opportunity to remove wallets and money, especially in the early hours of the morning when the tourists had had “one too manyâ€. Unless robbery can be proved or the girls are in the country illegally, there is nothing the police can charge them with, although they are forced to spend the evening in jail and lose a night's earnings. The idea is to make them fed up so they soon move on to other areas when they realize that the police officers are going to make their lives impossible. They are also patrolling in different districts of the town, as once the word gets round they then move elsewhere.
Car Parks
The new car park which has been provided on the site of the old ‘Idea' Discotheque was officially inaugurated last week. Adequate lighting, which will illuminate the area throughout the night, is being installed at the moment. The land which was also conceded by the heirs of Xavier Cabau near the out-patients clinic in Calle Londres has also been opened for cars to park gratis. A total of 1,000 spaces are now available to park in the town free of charge and there are 500 bays in ‘blue' zones and 300 in the underground facility in Plaza d'España. In Ses Païsses work is currently being carried out to provide 250 new parking spaces in an area which has more than 5,000 inhabitants.
The demolition of the ‘Idea' structure was much more complicated than originally envisioned, as it was supposed that by removing most of the concrete pillars it would fall down on its own, but it had been so well constructed that eventually two enormous cranes had to be employed to support the superstructure while welding torches were used to dismantle each piece.
