Parking

Both the Residents Association and the opposition Socialist party stressed
their concerns last week over the parking situation in the town.

Their remarks came after the contractor who built the underground parking
in Plaza de España made an official complaint claiming he understood that,
once these installations were operational, all the free parking areas
around San Antonio would be removed
.

Since this has failed to happen they are now looking for compensation
(in the region of €4million) from the Town Hall, as they are currently
making nowhere near what they need to cover overheads.

Unfortunately the underground car park has a capacity for just over 300 cars,
whereas there are more than 1,800 spaces in the various parking areas
dotted around the town.

A statement from the Residents Association highlighted their concern that local people
and visitors alike are forced to pay to leave their cars.
The Association's President commented that “the whole town has been taken over
by “blue” metered bays
, and residents should have the option to park where they like
and not have to pay for it”.

Court Case
The Public Prosecutor is asking for a possible five year prison sentence for the proprietor of two “Sunset Strip” bars, Café Mambo and Savannah for committing environmental crimes. These noise pollution crimes date back to between 2003 and 2008, during the five months between June and October. He is accused of ignoring all instructions given by the San Antonio Town Hall and “disobeying all orders by the authorities”, and playing very loud music on the terraces of the two bars without valid permits. Two families living in the vicinity with small children claim that they have suffered from insomnia, nervousness and stress, and have lodged official complaints on an almost daily basis. The Prosecutor is seeking €10,000 compensation for each of the children affected.

Its starting to get dirty now. Authorities trying to hide behind "small children" when their real target is to remove an individual who they dislike as he is is not paying off the right people.

Its all about the money............

I realize fines sometimes have a limited effect, but to send someone to jail for making noise? That's nuts.

Why don't they just go confiscate the equipment when the repeated violations occurred? Problem solved!

To go back 4 years later and send someone to jail... for FIVE YEARS... Doesn't make sense.

Exactly my feelings on the matter. I think it has more to do with ego's and cultural differences plus there is also a lot more going on than meets the eye..........

Noise
The two co-administrators of the Coastline Restaurant and Music Bar in es Cala des Moro, San Antonio, were on trial last week accused of contravening noise legislation. The case dates back to 2002 and continues until 2006; originally permission was given for music to be played inside the bar, with the doors and windows closed. However, on 33 different recorded occasions loudspeakers were playing very loud music on the terrace and on other occasions they had firework displays late at night. The Public Prosecutor stated that “anxiety, stress, nervousness, insomnia and distress” had been caused to the 12 residents, including three children, living in the apartments immediately above the restaurant, and is calling for them to be paid €20,000 each in compensation.
In one instance, in concrete on the evening of 26th June 2005, between 10:30 p.m. and 12:30 a.m., 70.8 decibels was registered on the balcony of one of the apartments and 48.4 decibels in the bedroom, whereas these levels should not exceed 45 and 25 decibels respectively. In 2004 the judge decreed that the owners were not permitted to place loudspeakers on the terrace and had to ensure that the noise and vibrations from the inside of the premises did not adversely affect neighbours. However, this decree was completely ignored and the Prosecutor is now looking for a closure order of four years, although the proprietor has chosen not to open for business during the past two years.

Problems
The Residents Association has presented a petition signed by 2,570 local people, protesting the problems that they have suffered for more than a decade, concerning noise, the filthy state of the streets, insecurity and street prostitution, with the accompanying letter demanding that both residents and tourists alike are forced to obey the local by-laws. Collection of signatures commenced in July, with one resident commenting “the village of San Antonio is not happy!” a phrase which has been incorporated into the petition. They realise that efforts are made to keep the streets clean, but they are fighting a losing battle. As far as prostitution is concerned, although the authorities have increased their vigilance, the problem has not been eliminated but has, according to residents, increased this year.

A spokesperson for the Town Hall agreed that the complaints were justified, but replied that with the avalanche of youngsters which invade the town each summer and with the limited amount of resources available, their hands are tied. He added that the noise levels have been controlled better this summer, with several businesses being sanctioned with fines or by being closed for a set amount of time.

Sailing Club
The old Club Nautico building in San Antonio is no more; last week heavy machinery demolished the premises to make way for a new improved version. The new centre will cover 1,000 square metres and contain a restaurant and bar, the association's offices and, in an annex, showers, a storeroom, laundry and the sailing club. Although the floor area is similar to the previous building, it will be better laid out, with more room to hold meetings. Access will also be possible from the jetties and not just from the street as previously. The complete installation will be covered by CCTV and will also have free WiFi available. Thanks to the recently finished work, the Club now has a ramp to provide easier access to the sea and a travelift, which is capable of lifting boats which weigh up to twenty tons.
Ecological selective rubbish collection has also been included in the plans, both from the land and the water. Seven new jetties have been installed, constructed with aluminium and wood, which have increased the amount of moorings available from 400 to more than 570, which allow craft of up to 40 metres to be moored. The new installations have also improved the fuel services, with up to six boats able to be filled at a time. All the moorings have individual water and electricity points, and the largest boats may be filled with fuel directly.

Conflict
The conflict between the authorities and the owners of the disused former discotheque at the entrance to the town continued last week after Mayor Jose Sala explained that he was still hopeful of demolishing the building.
The eyesore is the skeleton of what should have been the new 'Idea' discotheque, and has been a bone of contention for many years. It is the property of the family of the late businessman, Xabier Cabau, whose legal representative last week explained that, if they demolish it, there is no guarantee they will be allowed to use the land for a different project, as the classification of the land is in limbo. He continued that they could find themselves with the costs of dismantling the frame and have to sell the land at a much reduced price if the Town Hall does not classify it as ‘buildable land'. He finished by saying that he had advised the family to keep the status quo until the Town Hall has come to a decision.

The present mayor of the town, José Sala, made an election pledge almost four years ago that he would solve the problem during this legislation, and he would like to keep his promise before the next local elections in May. The lawyer commented “just because the building lacks the correct building permissions, it does not automatically permit it to be classed as a ‘ruin', as declared by the Town Hall”. Idea used to be known as Playboy and was in the open air until the 80s, when discotheques were obliged to be covered to avoid noise pollution.

It has always been a funny one for me when reading about the "authorities" in Ibiza.

Cutting off ones nose to spite ones face.

Clubs, bars etc have a certain obligation to improve the island as a whole for future generations. Whether this is promoting safer clubbing, keeping their buildings up to date H&S wise, paying for proper security and policing etc...

However with the authorities locking people up and making things difficult is a little crazy. It comes across as mental for them to continually attack the clubbing industry.

Might be a little controversial here, but Ibiza is clubbing and partying and that is the only reason i go there. If it was to change, future clubbers will simply find an alternative....

(and before people attack me, i appreciate that Ibiza has lots more to offer, but clubbing is certainly the top of everyone's list when talking about Ibiza)

That's my tuppence worth!

Idea
Talks over the future of the former Idea discotheque, which stands on the outskirts of the town centre, continued last week between the proprietor's legal representative and municipal authorities. According to the Town Planning Office, once the structure has been demolished, the site would be handed over to the Town Hall for use as a car park for five years, in exchange for a careful study of the possible use as a building land in the future. The talks are ongoing as to which party will finance the clearance of the site, which it is hoped will take place in the very near future, before the forthcoming local elections in May. This will ensure José Sala is able to keep one of his main election pledges in the run-up to the 2007 elections, which was to remove this eye-sore.
