The building formerly known as Space --> HÏ Ibiza

This is another good discussion that needs to be had. Maybe the mods can move it to another thread,so we don't upset the drones who want to talk about Hi.

Those nights have a certain set of DJ's associated with them

OR

They have a DJ that people love to see at those nights

The DJs run the show not the club

true, but that's not the point. whether you believe it or not, lots of people have absolutely no idea who plays at some of those parties, but they go anyway. they made a video about this last year and interviewed a few people outside the club. you'd be stunned to see the answers when they were asked 'who are you going to see today?'

believe me, those nights I mentioned are popular because of a certain style of music that's played, a certain vibe. not because of one or two DJs.

But for how long?

It's a ticking time bomb, agreed. But with this apparent uprising of the night economy we are seeing in the city I cling on a thin thread of hope. Khan, Lame, the NTIA, fabric's emancipation. All positives.

It could well be lip service. But it's certainly a better environment than it was 12-months ago.

That is a good point and actually there is still a few nights I need to attend to see what it is all about and DJ's I haven't seen live or heard of but that is the case with everyone

But if the DJ didn't matter then why are the clubs paying these DJs so much money? Or keeping them on year after year

You stick Carl Cox into Priv and watch that place fill to capacity.

in a way the clubbing industry forced us all to become consumers. there is so much shit around and clubbing has got more expensive so people naturally aren't going to want to take risks on the wrong nights. so now when I'm out the loop I find myself traipsing through RA listings not just to check I'll like the music but also the promoters, the venue, people's reviews, even to see who else is going - it's all a massive pain in the arse and kills the joy of discovering stuff off the cuff but what can you do? this is why I place a lot of trust in promoters/DJs I know personally

I can't tell you who was playing when I first went to space,or amnesia, or pacha,or eldivino, or Ku etc. And Most of the early raves, that's why they were so f***ing good! And I have always been ino to my music..

But you must have remembered a particular DJ on that first ever night. A certain hour or 2 of someone's set

Dunno. All depends. Met a guy at the Social last year who had travelled all the way from Manchester to see Sasha & Digweed reunite.

Said he'd waiting for this reunion for years. Told me he often travels far to see them both play, but honestly thought he'd never seen them play together again.

We carried on talking and he mentioned that he had been at the Bedrock event at MOS last Easter (when Sasha showed up).

He honestly had no idea Sasha had been there that night. "Why would I? I don't look at the DJ when I'm dancing" and he doesn't use social media. So there you go.

although I dislike DJ worship I think there is something uplifting about travelling miles as part of a community, the way mods/northern soul crowd have done for decades. it's the social aspect. andrew weatherall inspires a similar kind of loyalty from the old heads, which can get a bit silly but I think people treat the events more like family reunions. maybe some of the ibiza djs enjoy the same cultish devotion? - the impression I got a few years back was that the circo loco fans were almost religious in their devotion.

I would say I tend to know who's playing 99% of the time I go out. Mainly because I research before I go. There's the odd occasion when I go out on the cuff and end up on a bender somewhere random with no idea what's going on (often those are the best nights)

Although I might pick and chose a night based on who's playing and who I want to see, quite often it's somebody else on the line-up who I end up enjoying the most.

I also find it helps knowing who's on the bill in case you're faced with a door picker.

Come one we all look or have had a look at the line-up to determine if we want to go to an event or not

I have and am doing small nights to unknown djs and they are really decent....But stick one of them on the Ushuaia stage and do you really think they would have it in them?

Some of my favourite Ibiza moments have not included that detail.

First 3 times I went to Circo Loco @ DC10 around 2004-2006 I had no idea who anyone was. Even now I suspect the only person I could remember was probably Tania Vulcano. First time to Space the only person I remember was Jeff Mills & Mark Fancuilli in the main room and that was because I had a piss next to Mark in the toilets just after.

I still don't get why people are obsessed over line ups months in advance. Even now the concept of El Row is lost because people moan that certain people aren't playing, or want to know the line up ages in advance. Correct me if I am wrong but El Row used to just release a line up on the day of an event, that way people were going for the party and no other reason.

I can vouch for being in the group of not knowing whose until I turned up at the club, if you dont do it how will you ever broaden your horizons?

It was the first time I visited Ibiza july 2011. I had nothing planned on the tuesday, at the time I was really into trance. One of the bar workers told me to go to Space to see Ritchie Hawtin he was on CC night...having no clue to what i would expect I done it out of "yeah lets not waste a night'

On the line up was,

Carl Cox
Ritchie Hawtin
Jon Rundell
John Digweed

Honestly that night has stuck with me forever it was the best night of my clubbing life. The sound of the Techno and Ritchie doing his stuff, added to the lights and lazers of the discoteca it was unbelievable.

One by one my trance djs sold out or went to EDM, as they fell my interest in techno picked up and i've never looked back since.

I'm also one for not knowing set times especially in Ibiza as I dont use the internet or take my phone out, I like the buzz of not knowing whose on till i'm on the dancefloor.

I've been Ibiza 6 times and I always made sure I went to Space on my trip, ever since that night, I guess its true although i'm not a "Ibiza veteran from the 90s" you do bond with certain clubs, and most of the times it happens because of those special nights when you least expected it.

I agree that this is a good thing but if you know line ups are going to come out I would always wait to see what they are. For example I am coming to Ibiza this year for 11 nights and have 2 Saturdays there. I want to go to an erlow night but would prefer to wait for the line ups to come out than just booking a ticket. This is only because there are certain DJs who play more to what I like than other and although you know what you'll get with an elrow event if I can pick between 2 weekends I will wait to see which suits me more.
