Summer Dieting....

I much prefer doing weights over cardio. Also don't believe the myth about women becoming too muscular, it is virtually impossible.

If you want to look toned and curvy diet is just as important and weight training

It's ****ing hard! :(

It is easy to be skinny or fat but so so hard to look fit

Very true! Being skinny isn't all that!

I'm not aiming for Joanna Thomas-esque body  but would love to have at least a bit of a butt!!

I have found that Sushi is superb for dieting. Tastes bloody good too!

I also like a bit of sushi, although I found I am a bit sick of it now! I ate it loads in one week and think I put myself off it a bit

I find it really hard to cut out foods and diet. I'm not one of these people who can stick to any kind of plan religiously... I love my food too much!
Fow now, I'm concentrating on eating healthily, cutting out junk and exercisingf loads.

Done a 5k run yesterday lunch and have only eaten one Kitkat all week! Everything else has been healthy 8)

got a BBQ tomorrow though.... oh dear

Sushi rocks... but it's got rice in it so I'm afraid that, despite being light, it doesn't fit with my diet

Moscow is the sushi capital of Europe. I've got about 10 places serving sushi within a 10 minute walk of both my apartment and my office. It's about all that young women around here eat...probably why Russian girls are so thin!

I had 9 mini cadbury bars last night
Come on surely you can do better than that , I don't do "mini" anything. If I have chocolate I share a movie size bag of M&M's, minstrels, Revells or something with my boyf, or even a bag to myself (that's probably why I'm no size 0 though, although I wouldn't want to be either). The other night I had half a large dairy milk bar and 6 bags of milky bar buttons becuase the bags are so small and they don't do movie size!

Sounds just like me! I can't cut out carbs, pudding, anything, I'm just trying to limit them and manage portion sizes. I love my food, it's the centre of my social life and cooking is a hobby of mine too. I did my first 5k run the other day and am going to try and do it every week, it's along the canal where I live so it's a nice run and not too harsh on the knees and ankles.

I've always struggled with my weight, it'll be a life long battle.

When I was 22, I was 360lbs (163.64 kg)

... I'd had enough.

2 years later, I was in the best shape of my life at 240 (109.09 kg)

It's not easy, but anyone can do it! I used bodybuilding.com for their great articles on weight loss and general fitness.

Also, I should mention that a mix of weights and cardio yield the best results, however, you have to do what will keep you on track the longest =)

On Losing Weight

Since we are talking weight loss here is my take on it. At the end of the day it is all about mass balance.

Total Mass = Current Mass + Mass In – Mass Out

One can convert it to calories if one wants but the equation still stands. It makes no difference how much one works out, if the eating habit is f’ed up then it will not work. Look at it this way, for a 132lb. guy I burn 220 calories running on a treadmill at 7mph for 20 minutes. I can wipe away all that loss in one minute by eating a slice of Super Supreme pizza from Pizza Hut. There is no way one can replace good eating habits with work out.

When I immigrated to the US I was almost 19 and weighed about 130lbs. 6 years later I was at 180lbs. with about 25% body fat. I was eating only junk food and I ate only twice a day. I used the FDA food pyramid as a starting point to see what I was doing wrong apart from eating only twice a day, and I realized that everything was fine except that I was consuming about 180g+ of fat everyday.

Just by changing eating habits (eating 4-5 times per day and cutting my fat intake to less than 10g/day) I lost 30lbs. in 45 days. I went from a size 33 waist to my current waist size of 28. BTW, I did not lose weight because I was depressed. It was a pure technical decision on whether I do something or I will be dead in a few years.

From 150lbs. I went to 132lbs. in another 3 months. However, I was still at 18% body fat.

On Working Out

Then I started working out and I peaked at 137lbs. with 8% body fat when I was 30. I was working out 5 times a week; cardio, weights, etc. Each session was about 75minutes long. I was aesthetically very fit but functionally I was quite unfit. However, I was quite aware of that, which is another important point that I always emphasize to people.

There are 5 levels of competence:

Unconscious Incompetence
Conscious Incompetence
Conscious Competence
Unconscious Competence, and finally
Conscious, Unconscious Competence

I view these as being similar to levels of ignorance. I was at the second level (Conscious Incompetence) when I decided to do something about my weight and I when I peaked I was at the final level.

On Fitness and Principles

Then when I moved to San Diego I started practicing Russian Systema religiously because I wanted to be functionally fit and at the same time I was looking for something that will dovetail into my firearms training.

The Russian System (Systema) is by far the best that I came across that fit my needs and it really made me realized (or reinforced my thought) that being aesthetically fit does not mean squat if one is not functionally fit.

Statues are hard and firm, but they break easily. All the stuff of being hard and firm will have a tough time with someone who is nimble and smooth in empty hand situation. Look at boxers. They are not like bodybuilders but they are smooth and nimble. Now add to it the component of edged tools (read knives) or fast moving projectiles (read bullets) and you get the picture. True Systema practitioners rely on being fluid and movement (and a calm mindset of course) and the movement and fluidity remains the same whether one is walking on the streets in a crowded environment, doing daily chores, fighting with empty hands or with edged weapons or firearms.

I am now 33 and about 132lbs., but with about 15% body fat. Aesthetically not as good as when I first moved to SD, but functionally I am 20 times better. And I have not even scratched the surface of Systema.

The skydiving training that I am in the process of undertaking is another chapter in the whole scheme of things. It would not have been possible had I not embarked on a journey with Systema.

Hence, to make a short story really long, making a journey into the world of fitness is really special and it is very revealing. Furthermore it is one’s own journey where one discovers their own inner strengths and weaknesses. Best of luck to everyone.

seriously, read these 2 paras again. what world are you living in?

a friend of mine has lived in places all over california and he isn't preparing himself for ultimate street guerilla war smackdown.

why are you? you planning a coup or something? (this is a serious question, because mentally, the way you are talking reminds of exactly how castro did before they got rid of batista)

peace and love dude
