I had to get this off my chest - my holiday sucked

Ok!! I've decided that as a one off i'll try & visit one of the club's when i'm in Ibiza:D, therefore i take it that Ibiza's club's also cater for the not so young as i don't want that my pacemaker pack's up on me:lol: ? Beside's, it'll be intresting too see if i still have the charm for pulling the ladies:spank:, though better not tell the wife:lol:, otherwise she'll end up getting time off from her work & coming out to Ibiza with me:cry:.

Yes try it, you might like it :)

house music is for young middle class white people (i generalise morbyd) - not 50 somethings.
ahem..... plenty of blacks, Asians, etc. into house music, Stephen...

About this arbitrary age limit, tell that to Spotlight's own DJ Soulman! I won't reveal his exact age, but he's got a career based on house music...

ok, so now we've got TWO old people who like house and morbyd says plenty of non white people like it. i say about TWO % of clubbers are non white (i'm desperately searching through our member lists and photo archive to help you here morbyd)

the point is, music, clothes, class - they're all part of our demographic profile.

why do jazz stations target abc's
why do the r'n'b music stations have loads of text messages
why is pacha able to charge a ridiculous entry and drinks price

because they're all aiming at the typical person who listens to that music.
answer me these questions - they're easy

what does a clubber look like
ditto an r'n'b fan
how old is your average jazz fan
which university does an indie guitar band fan go to........

piece of cake.

thanks fatphil. most people like me for my joie de vivre and general upbeat outlook on life.

Barbie (or Babs - can i call you that? i will.) you're right. noone made me go. (although some friends booked it and i blindly followed for the nth year running so strictly speaking i was at best coerced). but even for those leading the charge there was a definite mood shift amongst all of us.

and believe me pi do try and find different stuff to do. ****, i used to move house every 6 months cos i got bored so i am not type to retread old ground.

blindmanskunk - i' msure you'll have a great time. just get some tips of Stephen rather than me (although beware of his current demographic/ social profiling - i think he's gone all sinister on us)

and finally, Sandi - i do like to argue with myself as much as possible. it makes a change from the television - which frequently incurrs my wrath. and my girlfriend told me if i didnt stop complaining to her about the holiday that she'd lift her current embargo on shopping and baby talk. so i needed an outlet.

anyway - have now booked to go to colombia at christmas/ new year. should be different at least.

an age thing

this is a difficult one i think sometimes us oldies find it hard to let go(of our youth)I would love to go to a big club just to see what its like, i just wont ever do it cause i would feel uncomfortable.I love music but to be honest i dont even know what house is.I go out with my kids sometimes and have a brill time but i draw the line at going to a club here or ibiza.

in 2002 we visited friends on Ibiza. They have an apartment there, visit regularily since 15 years, one of them is visiting Ibiza regularily since ´75 (he´s 61 now, the other 47). HJ still remembers KU from back in the 80ies.

When we walked around Ibiza harbour and I got tickets for Cream that night they asked us to get some tickets as well. So we did the extended evening tour (La Oliva, then Croissantshow for a drink, then over to the Dome) and went to Amnesia at 2ish.
Ok, we didn´t go to the main floor, but they stayed with us on the Terrace dancing to House for almost two hours and apparently enjoyed it very much.

Especially in Ibiza I think the "normal" age differences are not counting that much as it does compared to local clubs. Just look around at some of the parties...

I don't think that i'm all that old as i've only been around for 433305.60 hrs;) & when i'm in Ibiza next month i'll be 433473.60 hrs old;) , making me young enough in hours to try out a club without feeling too old:lol: . It look's like i'll be going to Borabora as i see that it's free too get in & it's on the beach, so i probably won't even be noticed:x .

if i mentioned the words sore thumb and stick out, could you rearrange them to make a sentence of how a bloke your age will appear at bora bora.

Not true! :spank: So many different people at that place!

oh morbyd, your sense of humour is getting the better of you. it's the clones of dr klubbenstein down there. you can't tell when one ends and another one starts!
here picked out with a pin from the bora bora site is a photo. the only difference i can see is some are girls and some are boys

per niente what a cracking thread - thanks so much for a really refreshing view - not saying i agree with all of it, but it's certainly stimulating reading ;)

pretty brave printing that here too!

i really do sympathise with a lot of what you are saying - many things have happened in the last few years which make me cringe and seethe inside at the same time...

.. but as stephen says there's loads more to the island, it's just a case of finding it.

these are some of the things which still flip my switch...

> paella at sunset in es boldado (or benirras or sa caleta)
> day on formentera sunbathing on ses illetes beach
> coffee and tapas in one of the little villages far removed from the ibiza-san an axis
> drink and dance at km5 / al ayoun (not the food mind, far too expensive!)

of course most of these things become rather trying in the high season. best to come in june, early july and september. afternoons on the sunset terrace in early july are still as good as they come!

Oh dear, Stephen has managed too put me off going to a club:( as looking at the photo he sent in, i would certain'ly stick out like a sore thumb as i could judged by the younger generation as being just another dirty old man perverting for some young female body:D , so i think i'll be staying away:cry: . I know how i'd feel if my youngest daughter came back home with a guy twice her age, as i would not be a happy father, but as for my son bringing home an older women, that's fine by me LoL.

Are there no club's in Ibiza that cater for the more mature generation:cry: afterall it sound's to me like age discrimination  .

rotten holiday's to you Stephen:lol: ( only joking )

Don't let Stephen put you off! I have seen many older people at Bora Bora.
The place you will feel most comfortable is at Pacha.

Thank's for that Sirens, maybe it's better i say nothing about wanting to try out a club, then no one will know about it;) Atleast until i get back home & i tell the missus what i've done of which she'll no doubt be 8O and my 2 daughters & son  . I'll just tell them, that i went for knowing what today's modern club's are like inside & it's music.

why not try the teatro pereyra in ibiza - jazz music round midnight or cova santa on the san jose road which has a fabulous modern flamenco show or raco verd in san jose which this saturday has .......angel rubio and his flamenco jazz stylings......
jazzjondo.jpg

it's a serious alternative to clubs full of youngsters.

Time now to name and shame. But in the spirit of not being a complete negative nancy I will list some positives. Mind you I’m now being dragged to Ikea or worse tomorrow – my girlfriend found this thread. She thought I was over it – and now it’s clear I’ve been lying.

And great news! I was leafing through Glamour (not my copy obviously er…..) and there was Jade Jagger prattling on about a typical 7 days in Ibiza. Apart from being incredibly dull it contained this gem about how when she wants to get away from it all she goes to this place tucked away in the hills called Underground. Now I may be missing something and there may be another place called Underground – in which case someone will no doubt shoot me down with great glee – but isn’t that the same Underground that is on the main road between Ibiza town and San Antonio, next to Amnesia and not far from opposite to Priviledge? Tucked away in the hills? More like tucked away up your arse love.

Anyway. It’s all in the open now so here goes:

Honourable mentions to: (blindmanskunk take note)
  • Mar Blau hotel – Ibiza Town. Run by an older Spanish couple and their son. Out of the way with a magnificent view to as far as Formentera. Unfussy, clean, quiet, conveniently located. But the most pleasing thing about it is that they haven’t jumped on the band wagon and jacked up prices. It’s very very reasonable. I just wish I’d stayed there more than once (two years ago)
  • Bora Bora – see Space notes in the list below
  • Benirras – if you are feeling energetic/ idiotic take a swim out toand round the rock in the middle of the bay. it’s a good 1hr 30 round trip but when you get there the sea is completely blue and the rays of sun cut through as far as you can see into the depths. If your lucky there’ll be divers out there to provide some added bubble featured enterainment. Make sure you’ve got a mask and watch out for jelly fish. Feeling less manic? Take a pedalo. One of the beah restaurants is apparently where locals go and very good, obviously it’s not the one I picked! (as usual)
  • Cala Vincent – ok it’s a surrounded by family hotels but the water is great and it’s big enough to never seem crowded.
  • KM5 – I hate to eat there but having drinks outside was actually quite pleasant.
  • Sa Capella – the service is actually very good and the food is ok. impossible not to enjoy it if only for the surroundings.
  • Pacha – hard to have a bad time and at least they still make an effort

Things I enjoyed that I wont again (unfortunately)

  • Space ( up until 2003 - see below)
  • Café del Mar (1995 – I was young and excitable, volume 2 the only album of theirs I have and it still gives me goose pimples)
  • Manumission (1995) – I was that idiot doing forward flips into the pool. Even if you were there on either occassion you probably didn’t notice but I thought I was THE MAN. No really.
  • Pacha when it’s really busy (up until 2005) – if I sent a snail to the bar it would get there before me. And my legs hurt. Can we go now?
  • DC10 – I’m sure it’s much better than Space. But it’s just a little too grubby. Good fun though. Wish I had the sense to go there last time and skip space.
  • Salinas – loud. Crowded. Never any sun loungers. The sea water made me ill from both ends. I missed Space in 2004 as a result. I seem to remember sleeping there in previous years. No longer.

Dishonourable mentions:

  • SPACE – I think I’ve met enough people over the years to get a fairly good cross section of opinions. And I KNOW I’m not alone on this one. But that shed they stuck on the front is a pile of do do and I REALLY miss the terrace they built over to accommodate it and to cram more people in at night. I cannot forgive them. I’m no goddam hippy and I realise the financial motives – but if by doing it they destroy what made it great then they lose in the end. We all lose. Like so many Tim Henmans. I WILL NOT forgive. Twice I have bailed out to go and enjoy the simple joys of Bora Bora.
  • Base Bar – I just don’t get it. overpriced. Smells of vomit. Nothing going on anytime I’ve ever been there. rubbish.
  • La Ventana – I really wanted the Yanks on Trip Advisor to be wrong. But they weren’t. and it’s a shame. Let’s hope they get it right again soon.
  • El Ayoun – sorry James! You’re right the food is totally overpriced. I couldn’t find a redeeming quality.
  • Medditerrasian. Pur-lease.
  • the club “parades” on the beaches and bars – is it me or are they REALLY lacklustre?
  • Me – for not eating at any more of the places out of town which may have provided good, honest food, cooked by mum, served by daughter, wine made by dad etc etc
  • me and my friends – me, for going to Space with them when actually none of us wanted to go – noone wanted to admit it to the others until we were there and it was ****. Them, for not believing me that it really wasnt going to be as good as previous years after my scouting trips had proved this to be the case already.
  • Electro – you are not twisting my melon man. Altogether now “I need a hi-hi-hi-hideaway”. I bloody wish. All I could think this year was “it’s just a ****ing Citreon ad”.

But in the spirit of not being a complete negative nancy

No one think's your being a nancy for expressing an opinion of which you believe in & quite right'ly so, i alway's thought the idea of having forum's is so that one can find help & advice on certain issues, of which yourself & other furum member's have given. It's just a pity that today's idea of a modern Ibiza is concepted as being young, beautiful and rich ( or try to be ). I still like too listen to music from the 60's 70's & very early 80's, of which i get ridiculed by my family & friend's who think i'm stuck in a time warp, "each to there own" is what i say.

I just hope that when i'm back in Ibiza, (as i'll be 20yrs older & more wiser) i don't end up like Norman Wisdom in the film 'What's good for the goose is good for the gander'.

I have visited Ibiza many time's before, but that was back in the middle 70's upto 1986, & ofcourse the Ibiza back then is not what it is today. I think i'm in for a big culture shock when i return as i'm sure that there'll be new town's/resort's built which did not exist before.

All in all, one has to accept the change's it's made but as for the club & music scene on the island, it's a pity everything seem's geared toward's attracting the much younger (18/30's jet set wannabee's crowd). I wonder if there's a business oppurtunity for opening a club which cater's for the 40 to 60's age group & over, playing 'only' music from the 60's/70' & early 80's? If so, i already have patented a name for a club & it would be called 'Nostalgie' LoL.

Continue giving your thought's as i find that they are very helpful & at time's funny too read, regardless of what other's might think.

Cheer's
dave
