The private security guards hired by 42 hotels in the centre of San Antonio have been told to stop patrolling the streets after a spokesman for the National Police claimed what they were doing was illegal. In a statement on Wednesday Rafael Garcia Vila said a company was able to hire security guards for private establishments but not to patrol the streets.
However the vice-president for the Hoteliers Association in San Antonio, Juanjo Planells, remains positive claiming the security patrols had only been stopped temporarily while a few loose details were ironed out.
The four “civic agents†were patrolling the streets of the town from midnight until 6.0 o"clock in the morning and had been supported by the Lady Mayor, Pepita Gutiérrez, who applauded the initiative of these businessmen and commented that the town is policed by the quantity of officers corresponding to the permanent residents who live all year round, approximately 22,800, but the vast influx of tourists and summer workers swell the population and stretch the resources of the officers to breaking point.
