Not in Manchester either!
The Town Hall has introduced a new law which prohibits residents and tourists alike from going bare-chested in public, apart from the areas near the Fountains Square, on the promenades and near the harbour. It was pointed out that in many places in Europe, including England, there are similar laws in place and the majority of people would not dream of walking through their home town scantily clothed. For many years now bus drivers have demanded that their passengers wear tee-shirts, as much for the benefit of the upholstery of the vehicle than for aesthetic reasons. Shopkeepers, especially those running boutiques, have been urging the Town Hall to bring in legislation to this effect for many years, as customers wearing little less than suntan oil and a fair amount of sweat brush against the garments on display.
It will be the Local Police who will be advising tourists to ‘cover up' and explaining that they can receive on the spot fines of 100€ if they do not comply.
Until now the fine for drinking or urinating in the street was between 300€ and 700€, but this has now been reduced to 100€, with a reduction of 50 percent if paid immediately. However, the Town Hall believes that they will actually receive more income from these changes, as there will be zero tolerance. Previously, due to the complicated methods used to impose fines, very often they were not paid and the tourist could not be traced once back in his country of origin.
