The building formerly known as Space --> HÏ Ibiza

@soha Agreed. But what do you suggest we call them?

The underground vs EDM debate is tedious enough without throwing another spanner in the works.

Maybe off topic but I hate the term 'underground' parties when referring to nights like ants, cocoon or Solomun etc basically any night that doesn't play edm.

These are not underground parties just because they don't play edm, they are massive parties and brands.

An underground party in my view is what was mentioned above, small, intimate, or very new party under the radar gathering steam.

exactamente

"Underground" is a very tricky word.

To the everyman on the street, EDM is underground. Believe me.

Again, perspective.

Agree. We just use term 'underground' to include 'Non EDM' music...... And that is pretty broad.

Also "underground" doesn't necessarily denote quality.

Joe Bloggs making beats on a ripped version of Logic in his bedroom uploaded to sound cloud at 128kbps with 5 listens is underground.

good question!

I remember a few years back when all the balearic beards on DJH were trying to come up with an alternative name for nu-disco, it caused a lot of sleepless nights lol!

Perfectly put and precisely the thing missing in Ibiza apart from Pikes or Underground.

If we are going to be really honest is anything in Ibiza really 'underground'? I mean even the venue 'Underground'. We are hardly talking Berlin, under railways lines and dirty basements are we?

And Pikes has one of the biggest, most infamous reputations since my parents were visiting the island. Didn't they shoot a friggin' George Michael video there!?!?!?!?!

it's underground if

a. very few people know about it
b. it's borderline legal / illegal
c. it's dirty and probably in contravention of every health & safety directive known to man (see also b)
d. the music is seriously obscure
e. it's not advertised anywhere
f. there's usually restrictions on entry / a password / some secrecy (see also a)

What do you class as "not advertised anywhere" though? How is anyone getting to this party? Does anybody new ever turn up?

Slightly off-topic, have you had the misfortune of visiting any of those speakeasy places? Like a joy-vacuum. Full of the most uninteresting, soulless people known to man.

Sounds like Pacha Funky Room on a Maceo Plex night. (JOKE) ;)

No there isn't, i don't think there ever has been but they are away from the mainstream.

I think people obsess far too much over what is "underground" (and what is "commercial").

If it makes your feet move, go with it.

Some ppl are soooo obsessed with being into the most minimal, cool-as-f*** obscure music, I really wonder if they actually enjoy it. Or whether they just want to feel exclusive.

as Mr Why said, you can't exactly have parties under railway arches in IBZ - it's not easy to keep things a secret.
the closest you're going to have an underground on a small island are private parties in middle of nowhere but on small scale and strictly word of mouth.

i've been to a few warehouse parties in London - seven sisters/brixton/tottenham mostly - probably the closest acid house experience I ever had was the four aces in dalston in 1998. those events were packed with dodgy people but the danger added to the excitement

whether exclusivity is a good or bad thing is whole debate in itself - I guess it depends on whether you want to be part of a tight, familiar scene or prefer anonymity in a vast room - ibiza is much more about the latter, naturally as a tourist destination
