The building formerly known as Space --> HÏ Ibiza

Too much is made of the EDM thing imo. It is dying out. Look at Miami Ultra this year, much more has been made of the underground house & techno stages having strong line ups, where as a lot of big EDM names are missing and a lot of American sheep kids are moaning that their paying $350 for a weak EDM line up.

Look at Tomorrowland main stage line up too, Joris Voorn, Carl Cox, Luciano, Paul Kalkbrenner all on the main stage for the first time.

With the above in mind I'd be surprised to see Hi throwing loads of money at EDM nights seeing that is the opposite of what is happening elsewhere?

Agreed about the global downturn of EDM.

But I think Ushuaia/Hi will put faith in EDM nights simply because they need to play the percentages:

a) underground clubbers aren't that hot on their venue. Ants and 1 other works. But look at 2013(? maybe '14?) when they tried to more underground. Didn't work. (same with Pacha).

b) already a saturation of underground parties. They needs to be balance if these people want to make money (and they do!)

c) taking tourists out of the equation - plenty of residents like more commercial music too.

^^^ I realise that @Amp and Deck will take issue with that post because I "sound like a businessman"

This aren't my views or my preference. Merely what I believe to be the case. Sucks, I know.

PS. I don't think we need anymore underground parties. I think we probably need less parties all-round. Quality not quantity. ;)

You may be right. I may be speaking rubbish, but my perception of HiUsh is that they just want the biggest and best parties, and they genuinely don't care what the music is. They'd put on tech-house 7 nights a week if we all flocked their and it filled the venues. There is a lot of hate directed to them, when the irony is they put on the biggest tech-house party of the week with Ants.

You said it, buddy.

I guess I come from a different universe. East London basement parties with 75 people for £5 on a thursday night where the lighting was held together by masking tape and the DJs would openly smoke spliffs and finish when they felt like it, and you would hear mindblowing techno from German nerds who would make it big in Ibiza ten years later. But yes, no suntan..

HiUsh (can we use that as short hand for Hi & Ushuaia).

HIUSH means: With a name number 2, your ruling planet is the Moon. You are feminine and sweet in your ways. You also have a gentle and cultured emotional temperament. Your moods maybe fluctuating moods, but you are in control and do it with intuitive skills. You are ingenious by nature and benevolent in the expression of feelings. You are close to your dear family, mother and family life. You are a night owl who probably needs more sleep from time to time as you exhasut yourself working hard. The have success with the public and / or women in general.
Cooperation is your middle name. People love how you seem to listen to their problems (even though you are secretly thinking about that movie you want to see!)You thrive on knowing that you have friends everywhere. Your strengths lie in the ability to follow through and take care of details. Dark side? Perhaps a little too cautious sometimes.

No sir, you come from the same universe as me! Sounds amazing!

Seems like as much as there is which divides us, there's more that we have in common

sure, I mean the question is how do you find that kind of rawness in mass tourism clubbing? I guess you can't because cold climate clubbing is a different beast. However, I think people don't want brands rubbed in their face all the time, you do want some escapism, which is where Ibiza has got it wrong imo

I think again it comes down to the human psyche. We're bombarded by "brands" in every walk of life, from the moment we wake-up until the moment we go to bed. It is ingrained in our sub-conscience as well as our conscience. (And let's be honest, brands do have a few benefits: Luxury toilet roll, reliable cars etc.)

When we're clubbing, we all want escapism. That's the goal. However you look at it.

But we're so conditioned to seek out "the brand" that ultimately clubbing is no more of a safe-haven than model of car/restaurant/jacket.... etc.

We want to be guaranteed escapism, and therefore we'll go to the brand we think can deliver it.

Maybe I'm wrong.

Just seems like a logical take.

No you don't. That's just an excuse for being completely ridiculous.. and not having a clue about the island.

Fair play he's said one or two silly things but correct me if I'm wrong, he's still fairly new to the game and still feeling his way around things. Let him work it out for himself, I'm sure he will!

when I first went to Space I was appalled that they were selling merchandise inside. my inner hippy just melted. so I came on here and ranted about it and was made to feel like I'd blasphemed (thou must never slag off Space). I know fabric had a cd dispenser but does berghain have a shop inside? can anyone confirm?

That's one of the amazing things I love about ibiza compared to the UK. You can go into the toilet in the early hours in the morning and it's not a swimming pool of mess. You can even sit down for a nice poo:eek::D

As for music taste, not everyone is into techno so I'm happy there are nights for everyone's taste

They only way ibiza will go back to the small intimate nights some mention is if it goes bust and only thousands of people visit. But then the vibe of meeting lots of random people from all walks of life would diminish too. (I'm there for music but also for the social aspect. Don't worry I don't stand on the dance floor chatting  )

Have to say that didn't impress me when they started doing that. It almost felt like a "look what it used to be like" moment....

Maybe off topic but I hate the term 'underground' parties when referring to nights like ants, cocoon or Solomun etc basically any night that doesn't play edm.

These are not underground parties just because they don't play edm, they are massive parties and brands.

An underground party in my view is what was mentioned above, small, intimate, or very new party under the radar gathering steam.
