Tell us how it was - Ibiza 2017

I don't really want to open up the drinks prices discussion again but I am genuinely interested in your rationale. I can totally understand the argument for places like Hï or some of the tickets prices at Pacha but I paid €40 for my ticket and €7.20 for water. This is more or less the same I would have paid in the late '90's so, at least for me, I can't see any financial reason for not attending the Cocoon night. The crowd itself was also great so I can't see any issue there.

Is your principle therefore more based on how Ibiza (and Ibizan super clubs) are changing in general?

I don't do big clubs anymore. I just feel more at ease in smaller, more off the radar venues, without branding being shoved in my face. I don't doubt that you experienced a good night/crowd, but it's not for me.

Fair enough. I can understand that. One of the great things, when I used to live in Switzerland, was the chance to see so many top DJs/bands at reasonably priced, small venues.

Pah, Cocoon @ Amnesia is great. Barely aware of the "Amnesia" aspect tbh. It's the party and crowd in the club that counts not the club itself really. The Cocoon "branding" is just a bit of fun and occasionally a few pretty girls on a podium with some giant letters - then they get down and the clubbers get back up instead. The bars were chilled out and the service couldn't have been more friendly that night. It couldn't feel less like the stereotypical "big club extravaganza" ;)

man, this ain't 1992. i'm no longer the podium king. i no longer fist pump to felix don't you want me at maddox on the costa brava whilst some irate go-go girl tries to elbow me out the way. i'm a balding, misanthropic carcass who just wants as dignified and discreet a raving experience as possible.

I probably rival you on the misanthropic front, a carcass with a little more hair - but Sven can keep you company on the balding front ! Wild horses wouldn't have got me into Amnesia 2-3 years ago but @stivi did on the right night and I am the first to admit he was absolutely right to do so. Plenty of over-40s there - and it's a fine balance between settling into shuffling around a darkened corner of a dingy bar withering into yourself and enjoying a relaxed and friendly evening in a nice setting with a clued-in crowd (who vastly outnumber everyone else at Cocoon ;)). Too many excuses Señor - it's not over till you're dead

I loves a bit of podium action

amazes me how people go to Ibiza and on this tell it how it was , they say they didnt go to a bar
my days of paying 70euros to hear someone play someone elses records is over. Bars all the way

You can add me to that list -- the closest place to a bar I'll go to is Arte del Mojito for, well, their mojitos, and perhaps to Tropi to catch a bit of trance there.

I don't go to the beach either -- I'm pretty much there for the clubs and parties from afternoon until dawn, with a break for sleep and one healthy meal a day.

But then, the other 350+ days of the year I live in a small town that's hours from any clubs, so I have to get in all the party time I can when I'm there. :D

It's always puzzled me why people bother to go to Ibiza just for clubs. Honestly, if you're going to basically be inside for the vast majority of your stay why not just go holiday in Berlin where it's a fraction of the price and the music is way better !

Why not! People do what they prefer for their hols! Ibiza has some of the best clubs in the world and lots of people save themselves for then

Just because I'm not at the beach doesn't mean I don't enjoy an ocean view, or love the weather -- that's part of what makes those outdoor events at Ushuaïa or DC-10, or Benimussa Park. Berlin also just can't match the backdrop of a Connect sunset trance cruise. For that meal I get, it's often dining al fresco at a place I've found while wandering the back streets of Dalt Villa.

And on top of it, the Ibiza vibe just fits me. More than most anywhere else, the people going out seem to be there just to have a blissful good time and to share that feeling with others, and with relatively little attitude. Even making the trip solo, I almost always meet the best people to party with and almost never feel alone.

So while the clubs are the draw for me, it's not just for the clubs or for the music -- it's for the whole experience. And while it may not be as perfect as it was years ago, it's still the best in the world for me.

Dates you were there: Saturday 19th August - Weds 23rd August

Where you stayed (resort/hotel): Ibiza Town Air bnb apartment

Club nights visited: Solomun +1 (Butch), Mercury Rising (Harvey at Pikes), Resistance at Privilege

Best night: All great in different ways

Worst night: see above

Best bar: Pikes felt like more of a bar vibe as Harvey was playing very ecclectic but met some nice people.

Best place to eat: didn't eat many full on meals but Beach House Ibiza food was decent ... burgers are massive so could easily me shared

Money spent: not sure ... rather not think about it

Biggest regret: Audis not the best ...

Going back?: Yes 10th September for 10 days

Top tip: dragged ourselves up on Weds after Resistance and got the Ibiza Town to Figueretas ferry and had a nice lunchtime by the beach before heading home.

This trip was second of three trips this and only really since my wife was annoyed about the stag trip earlier in the year ... was a really nice few days as warm up for our September trip ... enjoyed Solomun but not quite as much as last year but Resistance was decent despite being empty when we arrived but Guy Gerber played a superb set before S & D ... they were okay but not really any stand out moments ... Technasia closed out nicely and we skipped away at 5.45 to no taxi queue ... met some lovely Scottish people too ... we enjoyed Privilege and will head back for Resistance closing with friends

Yeah, this. Plus, specifically Berlin isn't that nice a city to wander round (IMO). I didn't attempt to get into a club (due to knackering my leg), but Berlin door policies seem designed to make the clubs sound uninviting. With Ibiza clubs you know you'll get in 99.999% of the time.

Dates you were there: 19-23 August

Where you stayed (resort/hotel): PDB. Migjorn Hotel - outstanding. Great accommodation, terrific location, very helpful staff, clean and two pools - one noisy, one quiet. The latter was exactly what we needed. Great vantage point three stories up to see the ladies of the night at work right in front of us with their influencing skills! Interesting to see that a new Eastern European branch has opened complete with scooters to wisk clients away.

Club nights visited: Pacha was best for us this time. Also went to Amnesia, hi and Ushuaia.

Best night: Solomun +1. Butch was rubbish though, far to much percussive house for my liking.

Worst night: Ants. Packed crowd, atmosphere was decent enough but has become very non British compared to the last time we went - nothing wrong with that by the way. But I can never get my head around Joris Voorn and we had the pleasure of a three hour set from him to contend with. He just seems to be the party stopper. I'm not into his track selection and the amount of times he interluded with the opening of some old skool tunes before not letting them go and switching to something else became very frustrating. He must seriously annoy other dj's as he sets up right in front of them and the crowd an hour before he starts. He just strikes me as a a bit of a knob.

Best bar: Tropi in San An.

Best place to eat: Never thought I'd say this but Cafe del Mar was surprisingly affordable with good food and outstanding sunset views. First time we have been over there for over 15 years. It was a beautiful evening and I was impressed. Surprised to see how busy sunset strip now is with non clubbers and families. Like I say, we've not been up that way for a very long time.

Money spent: I don't want to think about that.

Biggest regret: Being unable to stay longer. Plus wanting to go to three different nights on the Tuesday. Really missed out on resistance with S+D and would have also liked to get to Pacha for Maceo but you can't have it all.

Going back?: Of course. This was the 20th year we have visited. This year my Mrs wanted to do a lot of touristy things that we haven't done for a long time and most of them were surprisingly good. Going to try for the openings in May and another break in August, childcare dependant.

Top tip: Two pints for 5 euro in Tropi before midnight.

I did wonder where all the Brits had gone. PDB seems to have become totally devoid of them. Arrival in San An soon revealed the answer. Good to see some nice new developments around the Bay area. But Tropi aside, the West End remains a sleazy dump as are other large parts of San An itself (and I'm not just talking about the tourist areas). It would benefit from investment and a big clean up. Given the amount of cash coming in through tourism that shouldn't be an issue but in reality it's quite apparent that it won't happen due to continued government and council mismanagement. It's going to be a bigger job to sort out the west end due to the amount of Brits spending cash there.

Funniest moment had to be surveying the crowd at hi trying to get their collective heads around deadmau5 playing industrial techno for 90 minutes as he warmed up for prydz.

Least funny moment was having to call an ambulance and trying to get a young woman of about 18 off the bus at San An station and into said ambulance at 7pm on Monday evening while completely ket'd off her face. She was a right mess. No thanks to the bus driver who was only interested in keeping to his schedule. If she is reading this - I hope you are better but you need to find some new friends.

Stand out djs for us we're solomun, prydz and Dixon. Good to see Sven and deadmau5 too. Voorn, Curly and oliva and butch were boring imo. Hard to judge the others we heard as we dipped in and out of their sets.

Overall it was a terrific visit. We got incredibly lucky with the weather and I'd highly recommend the hotel. Nice to revisit some old haunts and rediscover some of the places on the tourist trail that attract many of the visitors in the first place.

Sounds rough, what happened the girl? She freak out or od?

OD I think unless she just had a bad reaction to something. She was absolutely f***ed. Had all on trying to keep her conscious. We eventually got her off the bus and into an ambulance at the station. I presume the paramedics fixed her.

There really should be free testing available in Ibiza. Not enough people bring their own test kits.
