Spotlight Running Club

:lol: The overarching theme between the old days and now is that I still do everything to excess

 .. I think the secret is diversification. As a natural obsessive (with a short attention span !), have taken to spreading my activities over a wide range of pursuits although I know I'll never excel at any of them. I've even been running hill trails the last couple of glorious evenings :eek::eek: - just proving that it's the wretched cold weather in Britain which I can't hack and is TOTALLY responsible for the lack of enthusiasm I usually have for exercise here (other than dance marathons in the nearest suitable 'dive' :p)

Nooooo, really :lol::lol::lol: So last year's 10k has had 2011 replaced with 2012 :spank::lol:

yup... and last years was the same as 2010's!

the birmingham half sponsored by BuPa also had crappy one size fits all cotton tees with a similar design...

why they dont at least set up a tee design comp for each run, and offer some kind of technical top too. ive seen loads of bods out training wearing old royal parks half tops.

Wonder if anyone on here can help ... really want to get a pair of new shoes for trail/off-road running (versatile enough to cope with grassy hills, dusty or rocky trails, and possibly some light boulering and maybe stream-running too). Not talking doing mountain marathons here - shorter distances with varied and challenging terrain.

Can't afford the luxury of a suite of new shoes so something as versatile as possible is needed. Went to a specialist shop today and tried out some on a treadmill. Salomon Speedcross 3s were a nice fit and looked great but pretty 'snug' and likely not to drain well if submerged in water. Innov8 Roclite 315s are also OK(ish) but pricey for what they are. Mudroc/Mudclaws are not a good fit for me for some reason.

Was then given a pair of minimalist shoes (can't remember which brand) to try too and it's really making me think. Leaving aside the garish design I loved the natural feeling but have never done off-road barefoot (only on a treadmill/beach). Can't go with the 5-finger things (too extreme for me and not enough grip on slippery surfaces). Does anyone have any experience of using minimalist shoes off-road in slippery or rocky terrain ? Any views for someone used to cushioned regular shoes switching to this ?

Probably sounds crazy but it seems very weird going without a supportive shoe when I think of going off-road - and yet part of me thinks it may actually be a stroke of genius ! Any help appreciated..

Injury report:
pain on the back of my left heel. must have sustained it doing a 9k the other day , no idea how. Seems worst in the morning to the point of limping but seems to loosen up through the day. hasnt been getting much better for last few days which is the only thing concerning me

I've given up on my attempt at getting the Good for Age time for next years LDN marathon.
Don't think it's possible by next month and I'm not going to push myself silly trying to attempt it.

Playing football is my downfall big time atm. I never get injured playing it just seems to knock my running ability for two days after.

Any of you folks near Liverpool/ North West/ Wales????

A couple of guys have setup the "Real Relay", follows the route of the official Olympic torch but instead of being packed away each night and driven to the next stage, this baton goes every yard of the trip on foot. Runners across the country are running stages of approx 10 miles at 10min mile pace to get the baton round the route and to the Olympic stadium. A few gaps to be filled in the North West and Wales, the real relay is an historic event, please get involved if you can do a stage anywhere.

I'm running the South Shields to 5under1and stage of the Real Relay next Sunday 24th. I hadn't realised til after I secured the stage that there are no hills :D

Also been checking; the tide will be out at the time I'm running meaning I can run most of the way on the beach, probably the only stage in the country that this can be done. 8)

I think I've managed to persuaded one of my long time friends to run with me, she was a top north east runner during the 90s but hasn't competed for 10 years. Im also trying to persuade another runner friend (who is 80 in a couple of weeks) to join us for pics at the start. He was my inspiration when I started running, I used to battle with him in the 90s at most races even though he was 20 years older than me.

Should be a great day. 8)

Gonna join WeLoveIbiza for his night stage a few days later. Running country roads most of the way in the middle of the night with head torches, should be interesting, quiet and peaceful too.

How did I not notice this thread before?

I'm not even close to ready for a marathon yet...I do have my first half coming up in September. Thus far, 10K is the longest I've done. It's really tough adding distance in the burning Texas summer heat, but I'm getting there.

There is a group that does a series of runs every year in association with a local brewery. Do a long run and then have some beer after. So next month I do a 10K, then in August a 15K, then in September 20K, then a week later I do my half marathon, and one more beer run in October which is 20 miles (how many Km is that? 35-ish?). No problem right?

Had a great day on Sunday. The sun came out for my leg :) Ran with my friend Sheila Allen a former top North East runner for Houghton & Peterlee (dragged her out of retirement for this :) The handover to me was bang on time.

The first 3 miles were on the grassy Links going down the coast. Footpath after that through Whitburn then we dropped onto the seafront Promenade all the way to Sunderland. Even ran a few hundred yards on the beach :) We had 3 water stops on the way with Sheila's partner acting as support. When we got into Sunderland High Street the Heavens opened up and we got soaked, but, it was only 5 minutes from the finish. To be honest I was glad of it.

Managed 9:39 minutes per mile, even including the water stops, so, were a little ahead of time for the handover. But, no-one there!!! OMG! Stood around in the pouring rain for a good 6-7 minutes panicking. Was just starting to text the next runner, Blaydon Harrier Hazel Ord, and she appeared coming up the street, apparently been sitting in her partners car around the corner. Phew! That was a relief. Pics taken and handover done then off she went.

Thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Got another leg to do on Thursday night running with WeLuvIbiza on his section to Barnard Castle. It's a nightime run, 1:30am start and dark country roads all the way with head torches. That should be another great experience. Looking forward to it. :)

Les, have you ever done the Pier to Pier race?

It follows the same route as you mentioned above but starts at South Shields Pier and ends at Roker Pier. It's about 7 miles and really good fun, and quite a bit of argy bargy when everyone gets condensed onto the tight tracks along the cliffs behind the firing range at Whitburn.

Done it the past three years and it's lovely when you get a sunny day but really hard going when the winds are howling off the cliffs.

Anyone running the British 10k a week on Sunday or has anyone ran it previously, thoughts on the evening?

Never ran in London so looking forward to something different.

No I haven't. Been meaning to have crack at it for the last few years. Used to do the Phoenix Beadnell to Alnmouth back in the 90s. Was 14 miles, but, if the tide was out then it was 13 miles.

Nike+ British 10K
Official Time 55:35
Watch time: 53:57 and 'finished' the distance 0.1miles from the finish line (just like last year!)

PB which ever time I choose, and running 20secs a mile faster. 8)

usual mass start carnage. eager beaver first timers spunking their load after 1/4 mile and causing tailback longer than those found on the M4 in the rush hour. took evasive action to miss one after 100m and calf spasmed but thankfully didnt cramp. ran it off, and picked off runners one by one in a fit of runners rage. encountered plenty of dozy twats calling and texting on the course.

did the liverpool triathlon a week ago, posting a 10k of 44:10 which after tough conditions on the bike I was quite happy with. Still know I can go faster, need to have a few quieter weekends to encourage more long runs!
40secs a mile faster is a great improvement Id love to see that in my own running! 8)
