Sant Antoni To Ibiza Road Plans Still A Big Issue.
This week the protestors who oppose the plans to change the Sant Antoni to Ibiza road presented a petition, signed by over 5000 people to the Consell Island Government Roads Minister, Stella Matutes. The neighbours are against the building of a supposed 4 lane dual carriage way with 2 extra service lanes between Sant Antoni & Ibiza. The protestors agree to changes to improve safety along the road but think that what they have heard about the proposed plans of the Madrid Central Government for the road are out of proportion with the real needs of the island. Stella Matutes defended her colleagues in the higher Madrid Government & said that the time to talk about the road plans was when they are actually finished being designed by the technicians & are presented to the public for approval or amendments.
Though Stella has a point, she cannot placate the protestors to the road fears so easily when everyday the local media are leaking more & more details about what the eventual road will look like according to the road design technicians in Madrid. This week the "Diario de Ibiza" newspaper released a drawing of the proposed 4 lane tunnel which will carry the 4 main lanes of the dual carriage way underneath the village of Sant Rafael. The tunnel section will start by the turn off to Privilege disco & will finish at the first turn off to Sant Rafael as one travels from Sant Antoni to Ibiza covering a total distance of 1.4 kms. Earth will be piled on top of the tunnel section supposedly changing the topology of the village of Sant Rafael creating a plateau like area which will allow the village to create a central green gardened area over the top of the road tunnel.
A 2 lane service road will be built to give access to the village & to the Santa Eulària turn off. This service road will feature bus stops & zebra crossings with the idea supposedly being that this road will eventually become the central street of a newer & bigger Sant Rafael village. It will most likely remove most of the traffic from the present road which runs through the centre of the village. The drawing of the proposed plans show gardens & trees along this new "main street" for Sant Rafael as well as park benches for people to sit on amongst the greenery.
The drawing of the road in the local paper states that the width of the planned dual carriage way will be around 24 metres wide & the 2 lanes of the service road will be 8mtrs wide. This adds up to a total width of 32 metres when the dual carriage way emerges from the tunnel section & when the service lanes re join & run along either side of the main road section. These width measurements seem to support one of the main complaints of the protestors against the new road plans. They say that the island will appear to be "cut in 2" by this super highway because of it's increased width of 32 metres as the existing Ibiza to Sant Rafael is only 12 metres wide! What's more, on top of the 32 metres of road supposedly more space has to be created & more land used up to make a bicycle track, pedestrian foot paths & gardens all along the length of the proposed road.
With elections for the Madrid Government coming up in 4 days time, the proposed Ibiza to Sant Antoni road has become an election issue. The PSOE Socialists have supported the protestors & are against the proposed road plans of the present PP Conservative Madrid Government. Other left wing & environmentalist groups have also expressed their opposition to the plans & added their support to the protest by the people who will be directly affected by the road widening plan. All these left of centre political & environmental groups have suggested other solutions to the problem of road safety on this & all the rest of the island's roads. Nearly all of them have said that the PP Conservative Madrid Government's present road building plans for the island are out of phase with the reality & size of Ibiza. They all say that a better solution to the Sant Antoni to Ibiza road safety problems would be to start to control the 2 big discos located along the road & make them close on time & respect their legal capacities.
PP Conservative supporters on the island & the different PP administrations in power in the Consell Island Government, Balearic Government & various Town Halls around the island, disagree. They appear to claim that the island's roads are more in keeping with a 3rd world country & are not adequate for a top European tourist destination like Ibiza. The supporters of the PP Conservatives want to accept the Madrid Government's road building plans with open arms before the Madrid Government decide to spend their cash somewhere else. They claim the island needs a safe & modern road network fit for the 21st century. Support for this point of view has also come from certain business associations on the island & from top representatives in the tourist industry.
At the end of the day, everybody, including Stella Matutes, appears to be talking & taking positions in favour or against the plans without really knowing what the final designs for the proposed new Ibiza to Sant Antoni road are going to be. Given the amount of passion which has been aroused over the proposed road plans so far, The Ibiza Sun wonders what "hell is going to break lose" from some quarters when the actual finished plans are finally released for public review.

who cares about what happened in the balearics (PP and PSOE got 4 diputados each for the congreso in case you are wondering) :?:

the winner of the national elections was the PSOE. the decisions about the roads depend of the gobern balear in mallorca (PP) but they get the money from madrid (now PSOE). that means that the gobern balear wont receive the money to do that highway because the PSOE is against it :!:

adiooooos!!

i told you so!!

the headline on the cover of diario de ibiza today: the PSOE will revise the project of the san antonio highway.

and inside (among other things): the victory of the PSOE in the general elections on sunday will entail the immediate revision of some of the main projects that were being impelled in eivissa with money from the central administration, among them the san antonio highway and the extension of the airport. according to the PSOE, the controversial project of the highway will be revised because its an unnecessary macro-project and because people dont want it.

yesterday morning 200 cars marched together (at 30 km/h  ) from one point to another of the planned highway to protest against it causing a big chaos during 2 hours. they went from san rafael to san antonio, then to ibiza town and back to san rafael to celebrate the big success with a huge paella :!:

as someone said yesterday: this is ibiza - dont be in a hurry!! ;)

Re: road

There is a railway on Mallorca. It can be a small version like a tram.
It solves also the problem of the harbour-to-busstation issue.

why a train? for the 10 minutes drive from san an to eivissa??

Re: road

If you are looking for a solution for the ''Death Road'' problem, a train could be an option because it reduces car traffic, specially by tourists and at nighttime drunken drivers. A 4 lane highway does not make traffic more safe.
