Women in dance music...discuss!

This thread made me think, however, and I looked back to some lineups from last year.. Timewarp 2016, for example .. only 4 women I beleive? Nicole Moudaber, Magda, Monika Kruse and Nina Kraviz. This year, I counted 5 (?)on the lineup.

Last year's timewarp, they were on fairly early in the night too. In my (limited) experience, female DJs at major festivals are not often on the 5:am 'til close stage.

I agree. Also my experience.

I've missed Monika Kruse the last 3/4 times I've been to an event she's been playing because she's been given a ridiculously early slot.

Step forward Rebekah

The way Rebekah's investors have practically bought mixmag, tens of thousands of pounds of promotion, a night at space and ghost written tracks is obscene and does the female dj cause no good at all. To her credit, shes worked hard at it on the playa den bossa beach bar scene but does not deserve the investment behind her on the basis of her ability. She isn't alone and is the most extreme case. Imagine that investment going to the aforementioned female djs.

Really?! Well I never. I won't profess to know much, if anything, about her. But the one time I caught her she absolutely did the business.

This is so true, I love Monika Kruse but she got a crap slot at Hyte Berlin this year too. I was lucky enough to see her last year in a tiny club about 500 metres up the road from my house, not only is she a great DJ but she hung around a chatted and danced with the rest of us after her set.

Ellen Allien is another one of my favourites, she was fab at Fabric last time I saw her.

Each to their own. Pleased you enjoyed it. She has some very wealthy people behind her. As do a lot of make edm djs it has to be said

One of my fave DJs is Miss Melera from the Dam. Regular quality seamless mixes from her and some nice productions, surprised she doesn't make it to Ibiza. Surprised Solomon not picked up on her for his posse. She is not averse to 8hr sets either!!

Its going off there. Nice track

@LuckyBlueSuit are you sure you mean rebekah and not mikaela??

I wondered that too? However, from reading this interview with Rebekah (admittedly from 2004) it sums up a lot of the problems and why attitudes needed to change.

As a female DJ you’re always going to get booked on what you look like anyway. There aren’t really any female DJs that are bad looking, if you’ve noticed – even the girls who haven’t modelled. And the thing is, over here all the female DJs that haven’t modelled to begin with will end up getting their kit off in the music magazines anyway. It’s whatever sells I suppose.

is that bullshit still going on? my female friends would tell them to get lost (in less polite English..)
