Women in dance music...discuss!

Rye, I love that you love Ibiza, really I do, but it's just a shame that you also happen to epitomise the type of person that has ruined the place over the past (how many was it ?) 3 years

Muscle topped gym heads who would be going to Magaluf if it wasn't for the fact that ppl off towie go to ibiza

It's not bitterness, it's just that we also love the place, and so are intent on not letting you carry on unchecked.

not a lot, but maybe a woman will read what you've said about 'why would a promoter take a chance on an unknown female' and realise even in 2017 there's a long way to go to change attitudes towards women in dance music

If I was what you would class as fat and done exactly what I currently do in Ibiza - You would be ok with that right?

"Carry on unchecked" Ahahaha who do you think you are? Tell you what, go round OBC next time you are over and say to a group of "muscle topped gym heads" that you will not let them carry on unchecked and see where it gets you!

I thought I'd read it all on this forum until you read some of this guff

the right to reply is mine mate, you can like it or not, I don't really care. But you said stuff that seems to show you have a dubious attitude to female DJ's, and that's what this thread is about.

No dubious attitude, just stating facts that male DJ's draw bigger crowds that female ones.

You need to let go of the past and move on. Sure I still wish for the days when I went to Space and DC at 9am but those days are long gone.

Regeneration and modernisation may not be to every ones tastes but it's a fact of life.

Ironic really that the way you and Joe carry on give me the impression if the likes of you were swarming the island - it would be the shittest place in the world

Less sexist, more inclusive and more women djs. Sounds great.

Atm we have a bro fest, imported from magaluf and ayia Napa. With the attitude of Jim Davidson, talk about letting go of the past!

oh so now you want to talk about letting go of the past and modernisation ? when earlier you wanted to talk about 'why would a promoter take a chance on an unknown female?'

You should see these guys at ibiza rocks hotel so funny,no girls, drinking vodka, getting loader and more slapping and hitting each other by the minute.. they must scare females away:confused: not once did I see them have any success trying to chat anyone up.. there was 5-6 of these groups all around the pool...funny to watch from the balcony

Really? Nina Kraviz draws massive crowds, as does The Black Madonna, Ellen Allien, Annie Mac...

Women are moving more into headliner positions but it starts from the ground up, with more women getting into DJing (and especially producing) in the first place and then for more promoters to book those rising DJs so they can be the headliners of tomorrow. Clearly you can't just take a new, unknown DJ (of either gender) and plonk them in a headline spot and expect people to be as excited as for a bigger, more established name.

But I honestly don't think gender comes into it. At Sonar, one of the most talked about sets was the B2B with Avalon Emerson and Courtesy.

Very late on this one, but it's a complex issue that keeps raising its head.

I think it's important to say there is nothing to specifically stop women being DJs or producers. The fact there are some is proof of that. But I think it's very difficult and patronising to actively push for greater equality simply to get the numbers up. Surely that in itself is just as sexist?

Yes, I get that the music industry can be horrifically sexist at times, but sexism is no more prevalent then nepotism and cronyism. To all intents and purposes it's just as hard for a male DJ/producer to "make it" as a female DJ.

Behind the scenes, in my experience at least, sexism isn't an issue at all in dance music. Many of the most powerful people in the scene are women. In certain areas women massively outnumber men, and I'm pretty sure that I've been passed over for certain roles/internships simply for being a man. Sucks, but nothing I can do.

If we're being completely honest, I think at the most basic level it's because not as many girls want to get into it. I knew loads of guys when I was at school/college who were willing to spend 50 hours a week locked in their room with a copy of Cubase and some sample packs. Only one or two girls though - plenty of singers and songwriters, but not producers/DJs. No idea why, but that's the way it is.

TL;DR - As long as there isn't some blatantly sexist person behind the scenes actively stopping women from becoming DJs I don't see the issue. No need to force the balance to change, because that's just as damaging.
