Weekend Plans

There was this kid at my school in the mid 80s when nuclear Armageddon still seemed imminent and other kids would tease him calling him a "dirty Russian commie" and almost crying he would insist "I'm Ukrainian not Russian" and obv the other kids were totally ignorant and found this hilarious. And I was a coward for not sticking up for him. That always haunted me. The bully boy mentality of the pack. And this is what Putin is doing, picking on the fat kid in the playground he knows nobody will defend. The West don't really want to get involved, everyone is tired, jaded post-pandemic, introspective and the last thing anyone wants is a war and he knows this and is maximising advantage, like the master chess player. The wider economic impact probably will be contained. Spain's gas supplies come from North Africa so I can't imagine too much direct impact but the inflation is getting bad anyway. I just got hit with a 160€ gas bill and I was actually staying at my mum's post-op for much of December. I suppose some Russian interests in the EU might get hit. Ultimately though, I suspect they will stick a stooge in Kiev and the West will howl and then gradually forget about it. There's no spine anymore because all those dumb wars in the early 2000s and the sheer cost sapped our will.

The news is pretty unbearable on every level and I'm finding it hard to currently focus on other stuff. Of course, we'll all get bored in time as we always do as 'news fatigue' sets in and we all return to Wordle, but right now, things haven't felt this heavy and worrying since the early pandemic months. And Buckley's right, fuel could get hit and the domino inflation could be massive, so a lot of people may well feel the pinch by the summer. Start saving now.. Sounds crass and tasteless thinking about the crude economics but that is the reality for everyone in the West
Everyone is going to feel the effects of this conflict. It looks like the wheels are in motion to completely isolate Russia, hopefully Ukraine holds and the West gets their shit together and helps out quick.

f*** Putin.

wondering if Putin has actually gone mad? Now threatening the Finns/Swedes too 😳

Saw that. The Nato alliance met this morning and included both if them in the meeting which is really rare. Finland does a good job dealing with Russia's bullshit but imo they'd be nuts not to sign some kind of mutual defense pact with nato.
Sweden doesn't share a border with Russia...yet. so they're probably less inclined, but they may have some kind of mutual agreement with Finland. It'll be interesting to see what happens.

The Finns are a pretty hardcore bunch and already have a good history of dealing with the Ruskies.

And there are already plenty of Russians in Finland….

…..they are all along the eastern border, about 6 foot deep.

Indeed. Im actually starting to believe that he has actually lost the plot.

Absolutely nothing he has done has made any sense at all so far, from a military point of view. (and a political one too).

I won’t reel off bullet points as I don’t want to bore everyone to death, but poor decisions are ensuring the only real gains he is making is a high body count for his own boys.

Very out of character for him, he is usually very calculated.

Beyond the obvious economic pain that is going to follow, I hope his ego doesn’t force him into pressing the button on some instant sunshine for western cities.

I’d like to believe he has at least got some level headed people around him that will not allow this 🙏

Not boring at all. Interested in your perspective.

Also, anyone that understands Swift, am i right in thinking that if shut out of that, entire Russian economy would collapse overnight? I could imagine the Spanish for instance seizing a whole load of yachts, bars and other assets

This is where i think things could get quite scary if a cornered Putin starts lashing out. I also saw that Anonymous said they had intercepted Russian intel and hacked tv but they're anarchists so i dunno if they can be trusted?

Once cut off from SWIFT the banks targeted will not be able to do business outside of Russia. Not every bank is targeted (i.e. the Russian central. Bank is off the list for now) as it allows for escalation of sanctions.

Putin has been bringing in cash reserves for a while now, 640 billion was the last # I saw, but that's a drop in the bucket. This will cripple their economy.

A bigger issue is Russian debt has been downgraded to junk, which will make it nearly impossible to borrow money (think 100+% interest rates). China is their most likely ally and they have to be careful, doubtful they'll be leading any funds.

France has been kicking ass the past couple of days too. Macron is passed as putin lied to him so they are confiscating anything with Russian ties right now.

As always, f*** putin

He certainly made him look like an idiot.

If you want real insight into why Putin is doing all of this watch this subtitled speech from Feb 24th. There are at least 15 statements here I would dispute. He and those serving him have a very warped World view.

All that social media reach 1.8 MILLION followers and this is the best Nina Kraviz could do. What a cowardly c*** she is.

What do you want her to do exactly? If you have a platform and speak out you get accused virtue signalling. Say nothing and you can berated.

The only thing that matters is an end to this whole situation.

Aside from keeping up with the latest developments in Ukraine.

Eeking out the last few hours of sun in Mexico after a month away. Got lots to look forward to at work next week....

They should all be getting the message out to as mamy people as they can. Social media is vital in getting thiings going viral and that means telling the truth to Russians on VPNS about mass murder by their government. The Russian govt are desperate not to let this get out.

The level headed people around him would be frightened of Putin.
In a business if there was someone like Putin running the show the share holders would have that person out sharpish regardless if that person is right or wrong. However in Russia's case no one can get Putin out.

I worry that the more you push someone like Putin into a corner and squeeze him he will just bite back. Ultimately this is happening with Ukraine right now. I fear if the world continues to bully Putin he will continue his crusade and take extreme measures.

The art of war states "Never put your enemy into a corner".

Had my best weekend for ages.

My boy was player of the day at his footy session on Friday evening and then aced his guitar lesson on Saturday. I enjoyed football more than ever on Saturday afternoon and we beat our top-of-the league local rivals. Proper ding-dong, 2-0 up at half time, went in 3-2 down. I, better known for crunching tackles and winning headers, scored an ablsolute worldy (c) @grego, on the volley from outside the corner of the box to make it 3-3. We went 4-3 down, then to 4-4 and then 5-4 up and with ten minutes left the opp ran out of legs, we scored 4 more to make it a playground score of 9-4. Oppositon were fuming and didn't follow the tradition of inviting back to their clubhouse for a drink - so I took us there anyway and took up the main table in the middle of the place:lol:

Sunday - kids had a lovely time at my folks and then I took the family for a nice walk around some woods and then a Sunday roast. Home in time to see most of the genuinely action packed Liverpool Chelsea 0-0 draw and the probably the first time a keeper has been brought on for pens, conceded 10 out of 10 before missing his team's 11th to lose the draw!

Aching today from Saturday's battle, but worth every twinge.

(Been keeping an eye on Ukraine situation, all the above is a welcome distraction. Selfishly thinking about Mutually Assured Distruction and whether it actually exists if the world allows madmen the codes for perosnal profit. That's how we got here, I think)
