The building formerly known as Space --> HÏ Ibiza

Haha maybe he's trolling or maybe he's not who knows. But he's entitled to like whatever he likes tho, sometimes people gang up on him on this forum and ridicule him, not really in the 'spirit' of ibiza aha

I don't think anyone does 'gang up' on anyone here.

these forums used to be notoriously cliquey but there are a lot more lone wolves these days - if people converge, then it's more likely a coincidence of minds not a conspiracy to destroy

that said - if you say incendiary things on a public forum, if you champion the worst music on the planet, you can't expect not to get roasted

Worst music on the planet?
Obviously not heard "I've got a brand new combine harvester"

*ps I like edm amongst other things, I'm not cool enough only to like just techno :p. It's all very subjective.

in this instance, I don't buy the 'live and let live' argument

garrix is symptomatic of destructive corporate Ibiza - the machine that is driving out genuine music needs to be resisted

anyone who genuinely loves the island should be fighting against that

i don't care if you're 21, 42 or 84

Look at the 'Party Calendar' for say 2008 and look at the 2016. Look how many 'underground' nights and there were in a week back in 2008, and compare to 2016. Do I like Garrix? No, I think he's awful, but I do not think he has driven out good music in Ibiza. The over and under ground have both grown together...

EDIT - I replied but my post was boring and I can't be arsed sorry.

Guess it's a ymmv situation; I actually enjoyed garrix at ushuaia last year. While I don't mind techno and done fair few events (cocoon, circo , Cox etc), for me it gets a bit repetitive after a few hours. It's not my cuppa but still is music. I guess someone who loves techno might feel edm is boring and repetitive too but hopefully still recognise it's music and enjoyment to many people.

Plus on a side note I think it's the money djs / artists are charging that is causing damage and requiring venues to have higher margin facilities (vip, expensive drinks etc). While guetta and co are known for this, I'm sure coxy wasn't rubbing 2 pennies together after a show either.

A mix of different electronic music types is good, just a shame proper trance has died out for the most part.

I just think we all need to accept that Ibiza is not the Balearic haven we all fondly remember it to be. Commercial interests have flooded the island and the Government year on year take something away which made Ibiza what is was.

I think the Hï "Club with us" moto sums it up. We are in 2017 not 1997. The island is commercially driven and will only continue onwards in this direction. All of the parties on the island seemingly start with a business plan rather than the favoured age old lets share some music with like minded people.

IMO if you want to find the Ibiza of yesteryear you need to start looking elsewhere.

(or visit out of season).

I think the most disappointing thing is not the steady march to gentrification, but the islands inability to support smaller parties and the underground. Commercialism is inevitable, but there are always small grass roots movements and underground activity to compliment the commercial scene as long as the demand is there. The demand is obviously there, but the government and locals don't seem to have that much of an appetite for it. I get that there are rules, but it's pretty ridulous a 50 person beach party can't exist while the Ushuaia empire continues to ruin PDB.

I'm very much of the opinion that it's not as good as it used to be. I'm at also very aware that 21 year-old me wouldn't have given a f*** what a 42 year old thinks about his holiday.

Same as that.. but we had our own thing when we were younger. Youth culture seems to have died out around 2000. Youth rebellion is so last century.

They are precisely the reason a 50 man beach party can't exist. And I believe the locals do not like big business and the corporate take over. It takes food out of their mouths.

I was getting at the fact it is a 'proper' club

But actually if you google it DJ mag put it at number 10 above DC10

BCM has a 7000-capacity and a whopping all-inclusive 15 bars — so you definitely won’t leave thirsty. Upstairs is the serious main party-hearty dancefloor with a 65,000W Funktion One soundsystem, pukka lasers and a big ice cannon

I think you could class that as a 'proper' club

Do you have shares in BCM???

Yep, I'm sure Ushuaia leads the charge of making sure every beach venue follows the rule book to the T. Don't the Ushuaia owners have a long history of politics as well? Hopefully the residents take control of their Island back soon. The current administration is a joke.

I don't know what some of you guys want. I don't even think you do!! So you acknowledge that there are still underground parties - albeit small clutters - but then throw gems out like "the island doesn't support these parties"

Please can you clarify what you mean by that?? Do you mean they need more exposure??? Seems like that's exactly what you don't want from all your harping on the past few pages!!

Yes. There are still underground parties to be found. Many of them are free/cheap. You've just got to know where to look. You've got to know the right people. You have to work for them. Are those such bad things to have to do? If they filter out the VIPs and the kids you so vehemently hate, surely that's a bonus, no?

The very fact that they still exist is proof enough that the spirit of Ibiza is alive. No, it ain't in Pacha. Or Hi. Or the West End. So don't go to those places and stick to your super, uber, underground parties.

Btw, your gripe isn't with Ibiza, per se. Your gripe is with modern life. I have no doubt that you genuinely believe it was better 20 years ago. I'm sure in many cases - maybe even all - it actually was. But what solution are your putting forward? Or are you just on a soapbox? I'm under no disillusion that I will be the same myself in 10/20 years "it was better back in my day, blah, blah, blah" (see every generation since day dot!)

You just sound like a bunch of whinging old men. Maybe you have a valid point. But personally, I couldn't give a shit because you depress the life out of me. Tell me stories of how great it was back in the day, by all means. I will enjoy reading about them. Those that have already - it sounds amazing! Keep them coming! But I don't want to be told how my generation has ruined things for the older generation because as the saying goes: who is responsible for the younger generation?!?!?! o_O

If you dislike it that much, f*** off to Croatia. I'm sure it's loaaaaaaaaaaaads better there(!) Yawn.

Agree with pretty much everything, but especially this part. I even sometimes find myself doing this when I look back at say 2007, 2008, (and anyone who was there in the 90s will probably say that period was rubbish). My view on nostalgia is it is often less 'environmental' and more 'personal'. That period was the best time I ever had, so I assume that EVERYONE had the best time then, and that THAT was the best time. Over the last few years as I have mellowed a bit, I enjoy the now just as much. I remember a few years ago when a 21 year old on my team at work just came back from Ibiza and had just had the time of his life after a week there. That was his time... in 10 years he will be moaning about the kids going to Ushuaia. And it will all just repeat repeat repeat....
