The building formerly known as Space --> HÏ Ibiza

BCM reminded me of the old "Oceana" around the UK. When I went Maga 6 years ago.

Big dancefloor, free drinks if you pay so much €€€ for a ticket. I think example was on. It was awful musically, I left after a few hours.

I suppose you could call it the icon of magaluf for your average 18- 20 year old who wants a week away on the piss but to me it isnt a "proper club" at all.

Just a place to get pissed and pull.

So what determines a club as a PROPAH club?

I don't like BCM btw

Also I would actually go and see Garrix at Hi Ibiza - Nice to mix it up

I just think we all need to accept that Ibiza is not the Balearic haven we all fondly remember it to be. Commercial interests have flooded the island and the Government year on year take something away which made Ibiza what is was.

I think the Hï "Club with us" moto sums it up. We are in 2017 not 1997. The island is commercially driven and will only continue onwards in this direction. All of the parties on the island seemingly start with a business plan rather than the favoured age old lets share some music with like minded people.

IMO if you want to find the Ibiza of yesteryear you need to start looking elsewhere.

(or visit out of season).

nail on head

I've noticed how the spotlight demographic has shifted too over the last 5 years

you used to get total mentalists coming on here but now you get people coming on and talking like marketing men in a business meeting - "Is Brand X a better fit for this kind of clientele that Brand Z?" Entire threads dedicated to club brands. I mean, just listen to yourselves..

horses for courses really, but for me personally (am speaking as a clubber now), a proper club needs a good soundsystem, little but clever lighting and not much else. if then the music played is good and the crowd is right, that is all I'm asking for really. personally I've always been of the opinion that if the music and the crowd is good enough, anything else (dancers and other artists, over the top light shows, pyrotechnics and such) become totally superfluous. I'm not saying it bothers me (at least mostly it doesn't), but I simply don't need it. there are very little exceptions to that - when I saw the gashouder fireworks the first time (the ones that go horizontally across the room), that I found interesting because I'd never seen it before. but seen it once and that's enough. and I like ice cannons because they serve a purpose, especially here in ibiza where it can get really hot on the dance floors. anything else...yawn. same as (again personal opinion) the whole elrow spectacle gets boring very quickly and then doesn't cover the pretty bland tech house stuff played all night long (there are exceptions).

Also I would actually go and see Garrix at Hi Ibiza - Nice to mix it up

good on you, one night sorted then.

In my opinion the difference between a proper club and one like bcm is the clubs music policys.

For example you knew if your were going to a carl cox night it will be house and techno to the end with him mixing track after track. You go to a bcm night you know its a few hours of calvin harris for example, then its someone playing pop music tunes off a memory stick for the remainder.

Also its the type of people these clubs attract.

When I walked into Space discoteca straight away it appeals as a proper club, with like minded clubbers who are there for the music, fully focused on the dancefloor, I walked into bcm people arnt focused on the dancefloor, they are talking, aiming to pull birds and generally getting smashed at the bars.

Pretty much agreed. I've only ever noticed the dancers at amnesia when i've gone for a piss.

Well he does sell a lot of records lets be honest and actually I like some of his tracks especially Animals
That dose not in any shape or form make him the number 1 DJ in the world though does it? He probably didn't even produce the tracks himself!

essentially the sheer size of large clubs means you will never get the intimacy of targetted strobes in a low ceiling club. I know some people like all the pyrotechnics and massive LED displays although I find it all an unnecessary distraction from the music. personally my favourite lighting is more subtle - some of you may remember AKA (The End upstairs) which had a simple disco ball that reflected swirling projector light on to the brickwork with dimmed main lights. that was enough for me, so why the need for tacky assault on the senses? I think the chemical brothers overdo the lights to compensate for the fact that watching a technician twiddling knobs on stage isn't really that interesting but that is a mega production gig at a festival which demands a bit of razmatazz - but now everybody's at it

Honestly I think I should open a club called Bygone in Ibiza....I think it would do seriously well if the regulars on here market it

Been to BCM/Maguluf once, back in 97 ( I think).

Went to a Cream night, Oakenfold was scheduled but was replaced at the last minute by Laurent Garnier.

Remember being gutted at the time! How tastes change! Garnier is just about my favourite DJ these days, but there can't have been many times he opened a set with BT Flaming June like that night!
