Spotlight Book Group

I've recently read The Line of Beauty by Alan Hollinghurst - satire about class, politics, gay sex and cocaine in the 80s. Great read.

Also just finished The Island by Victoria Hislop, a family saga set in Crete - I could write better, but it's a good yarn.

Clara, I seem to remember Sync was into Bret Easton Ellis, but I don't see him round here much anymore.

just finished reading In True Blood (Capote), which I seem to have started agges ago. Really good read. The story is about 2 cold blooded murderers called Perry and Dick. They murder an 4 family members. The book discusses the family which were killed and the area they live in. Kansas. The book also gets into the mind of both killers and talks about both killers familes.

Just started reading Captain Corelli's Mandolin - only 40 pages in and going by the size of the book will still be reading it the next time everyone is discussing what books they are reading. Very enjoyable so far, funny actually.

I really want to read a book called Bloody Foreigners. Has anyone read this?

I loved Captain Corelli's Mandolin - I think you'll really enjoy the historical side of it especially. Never watch the Nicolas Cage film of it though, it ruins it.

i hate films that ruin a good book. I read Gorky Park a while back, which was excellent.:D The film is tripe though, its like produced by 'Ryanair Movies' or somethin.

I only read trash I'm afraid

I'm in the middle of 'The Burning' by Bentley Little at the moment - recommended if you like that kind of thing (Horror / Supernatural)

my flat buddy has the film so I might watch it after I have read the book.

I was confused when the doctor kept wirting his book and speaking about Greek gods rapping people etc - it is slowly coming together now though.

love the quote 'Men take to war like women take to motherhood':)

just read the acid house by irvine welsh, absolutely loved it!

also read ecstasy and filth which were also great reads!

At the Moment I’m reading Dearest Holly, written by Kevin Wells, the Father of Holly Wells.

This book is really sad and my heart goes out to Holly and Jessicas family.
It was nice to see however, the families point of view of things, rather than the over exaggerated stories you hear in the papers and on the news.

Definately needs some tissues when you read this.

The man's a genius! Which reminds me there's several of his I haven't read. Babs, have you got any in your library??

I have them all if you'd like to pay the Babs library a visit or I could bring the Babs mobile library to you

i tried reading Porno but found the scottish slag hard to understand - might try reading his stuff again though cos I am better at reading these day.

I shall bring my library card next time I visit.

PS. Jon, keep going through the confusing start of Captain Corelli. He likes to weave in different perspectives, but once you get into the main story, you'll be away.

I like the book club. Can't we stay in and discuss literature instead of going out and hurting our ears/brains/bodies??

This has got me into the reading lark again.... think i'll start with Kerry Katona's autobiography then onto Peter Andre's....

i was thinking that when reading it, i wonder how english people can read this! i dont understand some word sas they're edinburgh slang. glaswegian would be worse right enough!

We've tried that and we failed miserably at the first hurdle and ended up on a 'cruise' remember   ;)

Oh well, maybe we're better suited to virtual book groups, seeing as we lose all sense of control once we get together.

Jon/Geeza, I have to read the bits in dialect sort of out loud in my head (if you know what I mean  ). I'm probably doing the worst Scottish accent ever.

 Yes I think distance is key when we're trying to be grown-ups cos after 5 mins in each others company we're boarding the cruise ship or going to Planet Earth
