Solomun +1 @ PACHA 2022 - Reviews & Reports

Honestly I don't know what you guys are on about he played some great tunes when I saw him! Check out this mix from this year, sure I remember a few of the tracks when I was at pacha. I liked it so much I'm gonna try and stay up to see him at Glastonbury this weekend too!

Well maybe Solomun knows exactly what he’s doing!

A few pages ago you were wanting your ticket to be canceled as Jamie XX was a no-show and you had no idea who Solomun was…. And now you’re up all night listening to him.

That’s not a dig BTW, I think it’s great, and that’s what Ibiza is about for me… discovering new DJs.

But we may be starting to see a change in Solomuns following… and I suppose that’s how you survive as a DJ / artist.

I think this is a great point. He’s packing them in. I cannot stand what he’s playing and won’t be going back to hear him anytime soon. But he can live with that as there are multiple new followers waiting to step in. The key for him is his management ensuring that he adapts in the populist direction.

I’ve learned that most DJs have a shelf life. Very few endure. Very few fans of club music endure. There aren’t many people in their 40s, 50s, 60s on the Ibiza dance floors. There are only a handful of DJs that I like from the 90’s that I’d pay to see now. Moreover, there are loads of DJs that i have made special effort to go and see in the past that adapted in the wrong direction for me and became irrelevant. Its disappointing when it happens, but it is a common theme I have had to accept.

That last comment is the key. The vast, vast majority of artists who have stayed at the top for a significant period of time have always adapted their sound, they have had to to ensure that they are playing some of what the new people through the door want to hear. To stay at the top you have to ensure you can attract new fans as some get older and don't go and see the artist as much any more.

As for Solomun specifically, we have had him on in Liverpool a few times a number of years ago. Always sensational! The stuff i hear from him now is far away from those sets for us. In my opinion, its not as good now as it was then.......but then he's more popular now than he was then so maybe i know nothing at all!

Fair enough if its to your taste! I just did not enjoy it personally. Maybe if I went in knowing he was going to play that vibe I would have enjoyed it more. I found it monotonous and eventually became bored. I'm not saying that every individual track he played was bad, rather that as a whole the set did not feel like a story and lacked progression.

I just finished this set a few days ago and thought it was great as well. If this set is anything like his Pacha nights, I’d be happy.

And like a few people have already mentioned, he would throw in commercial sounding lyrics all the time back in the day….one of the things that got me in to him years ago.

Comes down to personal taste/opinion at the end of the day.

IMO this NINL set was a lot better than what he played for us at the Michael Mayer +1 and I also enjoyed the majority when I listened to it on the livestream.

One of my mates (a music head) was actually there in Amsterdam and said Solomun killed the vibe after Adriatique and he left the stage! 🤣
Another mate (a rookie) went to the Eli Brown +1 on Sunday and said he loved it but obviously couldn't elaborate on what Solly played. Guess everyone just needs to go see for themselves...

Solly definitely changes his style depending on the +1 so it does make sense that the Michael Mayer +1 was on the techno side of the spectrum.

Can I just check something? In the past, the +1 has opened at midnight. Is this the same this year or are there additional openers? The reason I ask is because a few of the All Night Long sets at Pacha this year had openers (so not All Night Long as advertised).

They are all scheduled for 00:00 start, but much like tourists, they are subject to the same travel delays which is why very occasionally a Pacha resident steps in until they get there

Cheers. Officially it's still +1 opening, subject to delays etc. Going to fly over for Dixon later this month I think.

Just got back, here are my thoughts. Butch set the tone nicely, warmed up well for Solly who the people couldn't wait to see. Naturally it was very busy, rammed towards the front mostly, with some smaller pockets of space in the middle & towards the back.

I went to the opening & loved it, but wasn't as excited to return after seeing the reports here each week. But yeah as people have said, tech housy & the high pitched vocals were out in force. But to be fair, the bad vocals didn't really start up till the last stretch of the set. Up until then I thoroughly enjoyed it. Just ended on a bad note. Didn't stay for the B2B which would have stepped things back up considerably. Will likely be back for Adriatique as the +1s in 2 weeks where expectations will obviously be much higher.

Some track lowlights from Solomun include

Played this again like in previous weeks

Alsp brought back this one from his older sets

Yeah, I think I am with you on the Tennan - Satisfaction track! With a few exceptions sounds like you had a good night though? Anyone stay for the B2B? My guess is a good % here would have been at Sven @ Amnesia

I also dipped in last night, pre-Amnesia and thought Butch was fantastic! Only stayed 2 tracks into Solomun so can't really give much of an account

Fair to say though that Pyramid moving to Sundays doesn't seem to have too big an effect on Solomun's numbers

Anyone got a review yet of the 5AM - Close period? Years gone by this is the best 2+ hours of this night. A few of the IG-Crowd have gone home by this point, a bit more room, and the musically often much better.

Anyone?

Good night for sure. The B2B would have made it even better. Last call for anyone who caught some of it?
