San Antonio, what can be done?

Here's a radical proposal: Check-points at all roads into San An, nobody with a British passport allowed in. That'd clean the place right up ;)

the mermaid bar in the west end, open since 1984, has announced they're closing for good :!:

a much-loved bar for locals, which stayed open most of the year...

I used to love a Mojito from Es Reco - The owner in there looked a total character - a bit Rudi Voeller-esque!

angel lived his life like clockwork. he would do the same things in the same place at the same time every day. i saw him a few times last year just sitting on a bench at the bus station and he didn't seem to be 'all there.'

Café Benitez San An, a couple of years ago Angel asked if he could share our table, I used to think all the crazy schtick at Es Reco was a bit of an act. Not so !

Loved him and his bar. A little gem of a place.

Just read the article on the west end situation for this summer. I can't see any of them bothering to open this year. San an is going to be a ghost town I think. Any news on the sunset strip bars?

not a ghost town, but certainly it'll be less busy than usual.

mint lounge is open already.
cafe del mar is looking to open in july. I believe mambo too, but no date has been announced yet.

Such a shame, Elisabeth is sound, had my first drink in there around new year in 2005 and have always popped in when over.

The curfew on outdoor seating really hurt this place, was fearing for it after the pandemic tbh.

anybody know what Elisabeth intends to do?

Any idea if the boats will be running over to Cala Bassa and Cala Conta from San An Harbour? Also the Es Vedra Trips? I’m just looking into what will be open/running for our trip

I had to share my opinions on the matter. I can’t see what was wrong with the west end as it was? Granted it could be a little ‘boisterous’ at times but surely the trade off is worth it for the island in general.

I like other people started my Ibiza journey in San An at 18/19 years old, staying in cheap hotels, on the lash for 10 days minimum. On the strip every night and probably being a complete pain in the arse (in hindsight- loved it at the time).

What this did do though was give me a taste of the island in which I fell in love with, gradually over the years as I earned more money I continued to go back and slowly started to upgrade my type of holidays to what It is now- Completely un recognisable to back then I’m staying in higher end villas: hotels/going to all clubs and restaurants. I even proposed to my partner there and plan to get married there. I now take my young family there as well as 3-4 trips year with friends. I’ve not even been to the west End in years.

One of the good things about the island is that it did cater for all ages and budgets, and in my case the west end was a gateway to the island. If it gets closed down, would that journey have even started? maybe: maybe not- Who knows. What does Ibiza really want? To be the European Dubai?Place full of Rich kids/ bankers- whom immediately start at destino/Ushuaia- Where do they go
From there?? These types of tourists don’t have loyalty- they just go to the next ‘show off’ place

IMHO- leave it exactly as it is, if other tourists don’t want to see it don’t go there. Let the youth of today start the same journey as me. Otherwise the risk to the island is that in 10-15 years time, the place is dead, just another island in the med. There are lots of other island in the med which are as nice or better- but the nightlife scene is the islands USP. The people in charge need to realise who their customer base is for the next 15-20 years, surly that is young Spanish/Italian/Brits/Dutch and Germans with a few other nationalities thrown into the mix, so provide them with the things that they want.
