My parents live in rural Herefordshire now they are retired. It has been Conservative since 1906. A few weeks back they told me of this amazingly nice lady standing for the Green Party who was against all the river pollution in the two local rivers (not to bore people but rivers in the U.K. are a mess after we privatised water companies). I kind of just humoured them. And then the Green Party go and win in a rural area. Amazing.

The Greens going from 1 to 4 seats in England was definitely one of the best bits of news.

We had a sexual predator in town arrested today for stalking a teenage girl. Claimed he couldn’t speak any English. Keir has a massive job on his hands making the streets safe.
Keir ain't going to do nothing - most of the guy's top priority suck

Set up public owned green energy / tax private education / improve the train service / free breakfast clubs in primary schools

God help us.

All that sounds like things we need to me, and things that will improve life for people but hey ho…everyone has different opinions on things and fair play.

The private education thing…it’s not a new tax fyi, he is just gonna stop them from getting a tax break that they have enjoyed up until now as they are all set up as charities. Do you think it is fair that the likes of Eton etc don’t pay the right taxes currently?

Though if that was the case - why didn't the nation flock to vote for Labour?
They got less votes than they received in 2019....

Conservative and Reform - that will improve life for people. Look at what they want to give to ALL classes of people.

We have to live in a society that rewards people for providing. If not then what is the point? If you reward people for providing then life overall for all improves and we strive to be better.

If you expect the state to pay for you and look after you - then do we have any proof of where this works in the world?

You say about punishing the likes of Elon through taxation - I mean that is pure ignorance?. The guy is creating a multi planet species and tech that will help those with disabilities.

Bloody hell, you’re a right little ray of sunshine aren’t you 😄

I think you should stop being so melodramatic about the whole thing, we are literally a day or two in. Give it time.

I’m a strong believer in judging a man by his actions. Give Keir Starmer time and see how he fares. (Personally I think he’s going to be a train wreck)

It’s no secret that I’m not his biggest fan, he certainly didn’t get my vote, but he has been handed a pretty poisoned chalice here with the PM job. A shit sandwich, some would call it.

Domestically, he’ll soon face the doctors unions demanding their big pay rises. And probably the railway staff. Amongst many others that are under the idea that they are now going to be living in a Labour utopia. I think the stage is set for an epic showdown somewhere along the line.

Immigrants- France is looking at a far right government. They won’t be happy to accept failed asylum seekers back, which leaves Starmer with a problem about what to do with them. Keep them here? That won’t go done well with the electorate. The boat problem isn’t going to magically disappear into thin air now that the Tories are gone. This will be a continued headache for any government. Keir Starmer will need to get some tangible results on this front.

Meanwhile his Labour Party promised change and to make things better. The British public are already fed up with useless politicians and I can’t see Starmer having too much time before the knives come out. Starmer has struggled to control his own house for years, I think his biggest enemies will come from within.

In short, he’s spent years being the guy on the side line telling us he can do better. Captain Hindsight as he was known. Now he’s got the top slot it’s time to walk the walk. His own captain Hindsight, Nigel Farage, will be ready to shoot him down on every flip flop or back peddle he makes.

I will say similar for Farage. He’s been making a lot of noise the past few weeks and has built a pretty impressive following in a short time. Now his time has also come. We can judge him by his actions and the people of Clacton will hold him to his word. He’s another guy shouting from the sidelines, although I think he’s struck a chord with people by being very straight talking and upfront. He models himself as some kind of anti establishment and man of the people, which he probably isn’t. I look forward to the scrutiny he receives in Parliament and him spending his time in Clacton.

Interesting times we are living in.

Im going to give it time and see how it all pans out.

I just can’t believe people are so gullible … Farage f***ed us with Brexit on an anti immigration ticket which only got worse afterwards and now he’s peddling the same stuff and a lot of people seem to be sucking it up again good and proper … and at the same time seem to be more concerned about the Billionaires than our infrastructure or health service … stay off YouTube kids and maybe get a proper education ?

Indeed. All those who believe Farage's lines about immigrants coming here and stealing housing should do a wee Google and find out how many homes he owns. He's a complete conman.

The Tories have had over a decade to improve things for people and the only thing that has increased is the use of foodbanks.

Still too many arguments based on "rewards" - i.e. if I do this, then I'm entitled to more and more "stuff", almost limitless stuff, as if that is sustainable. We're going to need to draw less from the planet and share those resources more fairly.

Farage is a grubby conman in many well-documented ways but one argument does cut through. If more migrants are to be accommodated, thousands more houses will need to be built and a lot of beautiful countryside will have to be smashed up. Away from the heated emotive rhetoric, that is the reality. Would be interested to know how the Greens for instance reconcile their totally contradictory positions on this.

Given the state of most high streets now, I don't see why closed shops couldn't be made into housing. I'd also have a look at limiting the number of properties any one person can own and holiday lets (which I'm as guilty of using as the next person!). I suspect there are other things you can do before destroying the countryside if you have the right strategy.

please, no. It'd be another nail in the coffin of the night economy. At least it would be without the tightening up of legislation to protect existing businesses

It's a fair point, though I can think of high streets with few pubs on them (or just the occasional old man's pub) where there are already flats above shops. It might not work everywhere, but I'm sure it could in some areas.

How can you start your reply with those comments and follow up with

"I personally think he's going to be a train wreck

You have written a reply to try and put me down mate - stop being a hypocrite and offer your opinions without providing low key name calling

It's not hard to make some quick significant improvements, when the Tories had done such a bad job for the country (whilst lining their own pockets).

Stopping the completely unworkable Rwanda plan saves however many millions were going to be continued to be thrown at it, for example.

Putting experts in a particular field into that particular department is a another easy win. It's so obvious isn't it? But the Tories didn't like experts getting in the way of them forming policy for their own ends.
