Ibiza, where is your essence?

At least its become a national discussion, you would hope that this pressurises the authorities to take some action.

They need to either enforce the regulations in place, or if there is a reason those regulations are easily flouted they need to tighten it up and have tougher penalties to discourage people from thinking its an easy buck.

Is there any kind of social housing in Ibiza? Do you have the equivalent of housing associations?

Which is a disgrace with the amount of money thats been sloshing around the island the past 5-6 years.

sadly a massive chunk of that money never got registered and thus also wasn't taxed to go towards improvements on such things on island or anywhere else on mainland, but rather went into the pockets of a chosen few... :(

bus for sale, "ideal to turn into a house"...

not only is the guy exploited and forced to share with loads of others - there's also a rat on his shelf!
yeah and the landlord not only is proud of it but also adds "this house is one of the best places to live on the whole island"! :spank:

[more of the same tomorrow at 10:45pm in the channel cuatro]

My cousin is working in shagaluf completely different story, sharing big apartment, working selling party boat tickets getting €10 for each one he sells and can put friends up in his apartment when they visit.. so what still attracts workers to ibiza..

[bcn & ibz's problems with affordable accomodation on tv one more time tomorrow at 00:15pm in antena 3]

these programmes have been terrible PR for Ibiza - check out #puntoibizasaturada on twitter. So much outrage on there

who to blame? the market? the system? the government? the tourists? basic greed? it's really hard to say. the landlord lets out the property to the shady italian who sublets it to someone else, who is then forced to share with others in order to afford the ludicrous rent and dodgy contracts. the flat just turns into a shithole because nobody takes responsibility. OR perhaps even worse - the workers live in squats, in abandoned buildings, with barely basic amenities and in some cases are STILL charged money! then there was the landlord running an illegal effective hotel, totally unlicensed or regulated, who despite earning thousands a month (probably undeclared) argued he didn't make that much because he always had to replace a few fridges. I was almost laughing at that point.

these programmes have forced me to reconsider how I see okupas - in BCN I still associate squats with smelly dog-on-string anti-system dropouts but I now realise it is a whole lot more complicated than that
