*** ibiza gossip 2019 ***

Me being an old(er) git is probably why I still don’t get it. Regardless of whether it goes with the whole mystique thing (which you could use as an argument for doing anything, ie getting a kid to rock up and play and claim Claptone shrunk), it’s marketed as one person. I’m pretty sure most people who pay to go and see them think they are one.

It’s like the Milli Vanilli of the club scene!!

Bit off topic sorry... but I saw an interesting video on YouTube the other day (below). Essentially touches on many of the themes discussed on here, 18 years later, around commercialism, brands and excessive amounts of money destroying the “true spirit” of Ibiza.

I was in primary school in 2001 but that sort of period is heralded to me as some sort of golden era for the island which makes me think that sometimes nostalgia gets in the way of people remembering that money will always be a significant factor in anything in our society... I can’t imagine the DJs, promoters and club owners of the 90s early 2000s were philanthropists who paid no attention to the economics of dance music, it’s just life unfortunately.

it’s only time before djs become obsolete anyway. robots channelled by algorithms will do everything - you be sure this is already getting tested in Tokyo somewhere

That’s something totally different. They both produce music, one of them is a DJ the other performs live.

Agree. We all know when it’s Ame (DJ Set) that’s it’s Kristian etc. You can’t cmpare this to Claptone.

Elrow (for all its faults) should have the balls to actually not even put any DJs on - they’d still sell out.

While the username off course rightly indicates I am a Elrow fan...
They were close tot that point last week. The line-up for Elrow Rotterdam last week was announced 4 days prior after much criticism from ticket buyers (sold out) and Moscow edition this week was announced 1 day before.

Rotterdam line up was decent. Moscow was just Elrow residents with a local dj added.

Found this interview (in German) from 2015 where Claptone said that he's one person only. Times are changing...

lolololol. well said! beer and long drinks still cost a fortune in space and pacha in the mid-90s. i suppose if you really want to reduce it down to pure non-commercialism then private villa/outdoor parties are and were the only place where it is not about earning money. and this type of party is still illegal and difficult to find. so, we just used to go to the clubs.

of course ibiza has changed, but so have we. my older friends in the 90s used to laugh at me going to space - you have no idea james... open air amnesia was where it was at. yeah, yeah whatever ;)

i still love going to playa d'en bossa sometimes and walking down the main strip late at night in high season. all the young holiday makers are having just as much fun as i did when i was that age. easily just as much!

so kim... let the youngsters have their fun and stop being such a cynic ;)

i don't normally get drawn into this sort of discussion but i feel very, very strongly about this. i think it's a great shame that some of you are losing touch with "your" ibiza because it's changed - i do understand and i'm really sorry.

that makes it even more important that the next generation discover "their" ibiza, fall in love with it and continue the cycle.

/gets down off soapbox ;)

I lost touch in 1997..but still go back 2 or 3 times a year, the change isn't news to me.. my rule to having the best time is simple don't do clubs and never ever pay more the a fiver for a drink.. simple and works well.. and get the bus and hop off in some random spot ,go explore..?

Good post James fully agree.

The thing is nostalgia is a very powerful force. When I started going out 10 years ago people would tell me “it’s nothing like it used to be, dance music is dead etc.” And now, ten years later I sometimes catch myself telling youngsters in smoking areas about how much better it was in 2010. I’m sure in ten years the cycle will repeat and the 19 year olds of today will be telling stories of how nothing will ever be as good as Elrow was in 2019.

It’s inevitable to a certain extent that things in the past always seem ‘purer’ and better but I think a lot of that has to do with you being young(er), and it (raves/ football/ music whatever) being newer and more exciting.

In the UK (IMO) things really have turned to shit, mainly down to clubs being so scared of being shut down if there is a death on their premises. In Ibiza, certain things wind me up and for sure a lot of changes aren't for the better (of all the things, I think I hated that shitty promenade extension in San An the most) but I can still have more fun in Ibiza than probably anywhere else I know.

Seeing videos like that in 98'/ '99 were the seeds that blossomed on my 1st visit in '03.
