Very similar here but my Gran hailed from the Lazio region (Gazza lived there once lol) and came to Newcastle to work in an ice cream factory for the Quadrini family circa 1947ish.

Grandad was from Southen Ireland. He was a navvie with massive shoulders and classic shovel hands. He liked a pint or ten lol ?

Grandfather from my Dads side was a French national.

Classic British family eh ?‍♂️?
 
I think the problem with BLM, besides it causing division, tribalism, been politicised & never mind it not actually fixing the underlying issues, is that its a poorly communicated message that is received differently based on who you are.

There are implicit words before it, depending on your view point, which is why we see people screaming at each other.

Black person:
[Why don't] Black Lives Matter

Non-black person:
[Only] Black Lives Matter

Imho that causes a lot of problems. People fear what little they have is going to be diminished even more by BLM, as more "is given" to other groups and so on.

Personally I think it's all less to do with race & more to do with the poor underclass, which tends to be more non-white in many places.

As for statue tearing down, bit in two minds. Yes Coulson was slave trader & was a push to get plaque explaining this. But now seems a desire to remove all trace of him from Bristol. Well. Except for the trust foundations money he set up to fund black & underprivileged peeps education etc. Feels a bit hypocritical imho?‍♂️.

Also, yes churchill was a racist, but he did also great things for the country. No person is without fault and it is for us to judge on their merits & decide.

Funny thing is the Gandhi statue opposite churchill is the same. He did many great things, but also his time working in south Africa is well documented for his racist views of the black population, something he did regret later in life.

At least my home town statues are pretty safe. We have William Wilberforce and twinned with Freetown?

I know f*** all about mine, and my family are the only people in n.ireland with my surname so I often wonder how we ended up here.

Yeah that's exactly the point, if you don't get where other person is coming from, shit goes sideways. But the BLM movement don't help themselves with all the "mansplaning", which talks down to you about white privilege & why you wrong not to agree with them, which is a turn off.

Instead of trying to explain their experiences and view point & engaging.

Just seems many are happy to increase tribalism and division of us and them ?‍♂️

I think it works both ways though now. Depends what news source you are reading from I guess. So maybe white folks are feeling what black/Muslims are have been feeling.

Cheers mate, I wish I knew more if I’m honest.

All of the old guard or les anciens have all passed on and taken their history with them now sadly.

I envy anyone with grandparents that are still alive. Such a rich source of history.

Maybe you can do some research online with a unique surname in NI?

White privilege does exist though. It can be demonstrated via numbers. It's not something you can really debate, which is why you might have to switch to 'patronising' some people (not that they'll ever concede). And black people do try and explain their experiences IME.

As a follow up: Putting in small letters above BLM signs [why don't] could vastly help understanding instantly without having to spend ages explaining it to irate and emotionally charged people.

"Oh I get the shit you trying to say now ??"

Tldr; if your message is not been received as expected by a group of people, work on the comms. After all things won't get fixed without understanding ?‍♂️

But then again I can't see small gestures to bridging the gap been done. Too many sides are entrenched.

My grandparents were dead before I was born.
Iv keep meaning to research it a bit.
It's an Irish name, there seems to be a few down in Cork direction but no reletives of ours at all.

It does exist but it’s being over used like calling people nazi (seen being said to Jewish people) and bing called racist when certain people are not, just to shut down conversation. It then waters everything down and gets in the way of the real culprits.
Example if you think I have white privalige then my wife has it as well and she has had the same experiences and chances in life that I have. And she is mixed race as I’ve said before. So it’s probably more a class issue than anything.
