On the news thread - two cases in Formentera which was previously clean. They have been restricting travel from the mainland and I believe testing at the port.

yeah but maybe that happened too late? also I don't think they actually tested arrivals, but just took their temperature? unsure but it just shows we're still a long way from being clear here. I for one am almost sure they'll keep the lockdown past easter in some form still

They've got a decision to make - Spain can't afford to lose 2 - 3 months tourism but there are people dying by the minute, and even if they opened up by June they would probably still have to test people at the airport.
Wonder if a way round this is for arrival airports to accept a valid document form the passengers own doctor to show they don't have the virus (or have had it and should be immune) - putting the onus on the departure airport not to allow travel without this document?

I don't think it would be worth the paper it is written on. Countries would want to do their own test to check and that takes a day or so min at minute. Plus I suspect it would show negative in the first 5-7 days until you build enough viral load. Hence why South Korea etc imposing 14 day quarantine.

A sobering thought, this is equivalent of multiple fatal plane crashes a day for most countries. ?

that's exactly what I was thinking. the whole EU can't stay on lockdown for months. so once the worst is over and the country wide lockdowns are done, if you wanna travel abroad, you should first go see your doc and get a test a few days before you travel and then get tested both at the airport of departure as well as on arrival. it's an expensive thing this, but if the goverment wants tourism to return and not being a risk, during the first few months it's the only way I can see it working really.

Yeah, as mentioned earlier today, it could work for antibody test. - I've had it and immune / ok. (Test takes 15 mins approx)

But people who've not had it wouldn't really be able to travel as things stand.

Trump doesn't appear to want to lose a few months either, his outlook seems to be that the cure is worse than the virus.

He is keen to have his country up and running by Easter, which I think is very very optimistic unless he is happy to pay for it with corpses.

I'm sure his perspective is that the European nations in lockdown are wiping out their own economies. Maybe we are.

I'm not sure how long the UK can go on in lockdown mode, with the government paying everyone to sit at home. If it does its going to be a massive repayment expected from the working man/woman in taxes.

Need a better solution than a lockdown. I know its pretty much all they have at the moment, but hopefully the testing kits come online soon and changes things. Something needs to give.

Agreed, the government will be have no choice but to support it and actively encourage it in order to get themselves back on track. Without tourism there will be a massive deficit.

Tourists as well will have to make a positive effort to ensure requirements are fulfilled, otherwise they will lose their holiday and the money spent on it as I imagine the small print will have it all included.

Oh yeah sorry
Because you have not had it, so not immune and potentially can catch it, and the swab test reliability is a little patchy under 7 days from infection. Also been reports that when swabbing throat they can sometimes miss the infected area and thus give a false negative. Thus quarantine on arrival for a week or 2 and do the test again at end of that period.

But the antibody test is a simple green/red light that can be done in 15 minutes, so logistically much simpler than boxing people up for a week on arrival. (Could be done waiting at departure gate too). It doesn't require a lab either.

Secondly imagine you haven't had it, go to another country, isolated for a week, have holiday. On return, you would have to go through it all again.

There are two parties , which decide if you can travel The country of the tourist and the country to travel to. If have to go to quarantine on your own cost when you come back ,you will not go ...

In summary there will be 2 classes of people. Those who've had it and have [some] immunity and will be allowed freedom of movement. And those that haven't, well until a vaccine comes about, which would put you in group 1

So basically, healthy young (ie under 60-70) people are better off going to coronavirus parties (like kids used to go to measles/chickenpox parties) and catching the darned thing, then going into isolation and then can be released out into the world again?

Lol, well in theory, but still russian roulette. Young people are dying.

But in your scenario to be more correct: young people go to a covid party, then are kept in strict lockdown isolation for 3 weeks until not infectious anymore.
Edit: missed your isolation part lol

Tbh I wonder if that would have been a viable strategy for key workers a month or 2 ago . Risky in some ways ??‍♂️

Also just heard on the telly that lockdown could be over six months (UK). The public won't put up with that, it will start to be ignored and pretty soon too, and that would probably make things worse than a gradual return - say after a month - which people may well stick to as they see an end in sight?
