This will cause additional, unnecessary fatalities in these countries :(

The hesitancy on the continent for this vaccine is already quite high, the amount of damage this action is going to cause will be huge.

Stinks of politics.
Aye and even if they change their mind next week the damage is already done.
Confidence in the AZ vaccine is shot. Lots of people here now saying they arent going for it, so disappointing as the vax programme was going so well.

There is honestly a very real chance that the EU as an institution will suffer massively from their handling of this - so many nations will look at how well we've managed and no doubt political parties on the right will play on it across Europe.

Can't help feel it's all political in trying to cover an expected shortfall in vaccines by suspending it for 'safety concerns'.

Germany explains its decision to stop vaccinations with AZ with 7 cases of blood clotting in the brain shortly after the vaccination, 3 of which caused death (article in German).

About 1.6 mio persons were vaccinated with AstraZeneca in Germany so far (3.06 million doses delivered and 54% of them used up - source). Which means even if the vaccine alone caused all these blood clots, a vaccination with AZ is as safe as a commercial helicopter flight.

Or from another perspective: at this death rate (even if the vaccine is to blame), giving the vaccine to every German would result in 153 deaths, which is less than the daily Covid death toll in Germany.

Some people in the govt seem to have forgotten we have a pandemic out there

I havnt looked into any articles but that seems high to me and concerning if accurate

Your playing it down by saying its as safe as a helicopter flight
I don't know about you but I'd be shitting my pants getting on a helicopter 🤣

Pfizer has reports of it too. Surely should suspend that one too?💁‍♂️

Professor Stephen Evans from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine said the latest publicly available data showed there were 35 reported cases of thrombocytopenia (a low blood platelet disorder) out of 54,000 “yellow card” reports after nearly 10 million AstraZeneca vaccinations.

For the Pfizer vaccine there were 22 cases out of 33,000 reports and almost 11 million doses administered.

Prof Evans said: “It is clear that the proportion of reports for this bleeding disorder is not different in the two vaccines."

There's been a smear campaign about AZ since the very beginning, from "the Russians hacked their IT system" to the pause in the trial being blown out of proportion

That was before you had the frankly criminal behaviour of European leaders slander it

In many ways, maybe this is just their damage limitation? They know they f***ed it and this is their out

This is the crux of it all. There is evidence of cases with all the vaccines but the suspension of one.

UK is about to take a significant step change over the next two to three weeks as capacity ramps further and all over 50's, then 40s are all vaccinated.

As restrictions are relaxed many areas of Europe will be asking why they are not in same situation? Throwing shade on the AZ is the political tool for deflection on progress.

Have a watch. Very illuminating and worth noting that this relates to people still having difficulty more than 12 weeks after getting ill with Covid, some of whom had only moderate or mild disease.

My mates nearly 5 months in and really struggling, still not back at work. Wasn't particularly ill when he had it

On a more positive note my other mates mum came out of ICU after 9 weeks. Long road to recovery but thankfully still with us
