Finally managed to sort my second jab nearer to home, wasn't relishing the prospect of another 400 mile day trip and £50 in unnecessary diesel.... 17th May will do just fine can't see me being able to get away before July anyway - after 18 months of being here dependency has well and truly set in and it's going to take some doing to turn around if that's even still possible ! Very challenging times ahead ....

Given up on July 15th and moved it back to 2022. September 6th and early October it is 🕺🍹☀️
Exactly the same mate. Moved July to 2022 and still got my family trip in September which I can definitely see happening. Then we'll see how we go and if things are open....maybe a little Clockwork trip in October.

Looking at countries that might be a little more relaxed about the rules for July, maybe Greece or Croatia...

If Clockwork happens in October I'll be there. Just been trying to work out where might be possible early July as well

Need some ☀️☀️☀️☀️

Why, do the vaccines not work or something? People die. "That's life son"
If wer face further lockdowns..even a suggestion of...who will buy their winter holidays in advance? The season tickets for the footy? Gym memberships? Businesses will be devastated.

We need certainty; if there's one thing certain in life it's death. So we should now be allowed to live what's left as fully as possible...fuller....and when the inevitable happens it happens. Rather have 10 good years and drop dead than thirty years of this bloody misery.

Whats the problem? They're just sticking the roadmap laid out. I.e they won't move any quicker.

Seems sensible to me
The road map isn't set in stone. They could easily lockdown further, all we know is they won't open up sooner. The dates given are the "earliest". In the UK the soonest we can get down the pub for an indoors pint, or leave the country for a holiday (certificates permitting) is ten weeks from now. That doesn't mean they can't put it back further.

How are we supposed to plan?

It is set in stone that it wouldn't be any earlier - so keep asking for it to be bought forward was futile.

We have a roadmap, and so far we are sticking to it. Nothing suggests that the government want to stay lockdown any further and so far with the vaccine roll out I can't see a scenario where we would fall off that plan so much - certainly for the April / May dates.

That's kind of the issue with a pandemic, you don't have that certainty you're used to.

Nothing wrong with what Whitty said at all, case numbers are going to go up regardless of the vaccine if we unlock. His point was that the most vulnerable people should be better protected, but it's not a guarantee, and people shouldn't just think we can go back to normal on 12th April or even early summer. Things like face masks, hand sanitiser, social distancing will be with us through next winter too imo - but hopefully without the need for a further lockdown if people do their fair share.

The riskiest time to plan for is September and October imho. There's little doubt people will go crazy over August in the Med (just look at St Tropez last year for example) and there will be many people travelling without 2nd dose of vaccine. Europe has no proper handle on SA variant and it will likely circulate as people mix and travel together over the Summer, many relying on vaccine passports which mean very little for a virus that can clearly break through existing vaccination protection such as it is.

I would not be at all surprised to see international travel restrictions return for the Autumn. So the sweet spot is probably mid July.

Studies out this week show that the Oxford, Pfizer and Moderna jabs are all effective against all current known variants.

But not 'as' effective, which suggest it will still lead to an increase in serious cases.

There's also the risk that as these more potent viruses mutate, wider circulation renders the mutations more dangerous.

Having said that, the next batch of vaccines should also negate the first point and make them more effective against the dominant strains.
