Link: Boris Johnson says lateral flow tests could be used to reopen nightclubs and theatres (msn.com)

It may be unlikely soon, but the fact that it is getting talked about is a good thing!

“But what we are thinking of at the moment is more of a route that relies on mass vaccination…plus lateral flow testing, rapid testing for those bits of the economy that are the toughest nuts to crack, such as nightclubs or theatres, those parts of the economy we couldn’t get open last year, and I think that will be the route that we go down and that businesses will go down.”

smells a bit of a bone being thrown to the industry to me. Lateral flow tests are currently very expensive and need to be administered by a professional. I can’t see how this really works at any scale.

also the risk of travelling to a festival, entry fee, hotels, trains etc - only to run the risk of a positive test (accuracy another thing)

not a fan but for this scenario I’d much prefer a vaccination card type system instead

I thought LFD tests were very cheap in comparrison to PCR.

They don’t need to be done by a professional either. My Dad has to do it himself twice a week for work.

I think this may be used in tandem with vaccines, for the time period where younger folk don’t have access to a vaccinebut want to go clubbing?

I am sceptical over Boris comments. They have always kept tight lipped on plans waiting for their official guidance and we all know the ‘30 page’ road out of lockdown is released next Monday. So why talk about nightclubs and theatres yesterday?

being cynical I reckon none of the above are going to be discussed next Monday and it’s simply been bought up now to give some hope for a ‘later plan’

hope I’m wrong but I don’t trust much about this government

Was interested to read Spain is going to exclude anyone testing positive from access to the Coronavirus vaccine for 6 months even if they were asymptomatic, which will save them administering a fair few doses ! They seem pretty confident there will be no reinfection for at least that long. UK has decided to give a full double dose to people who have had the virus.

They are also dishing out Astra Zeneca to under-55 keyworkers including teachers and police officers etc. already, having excluded giving this vaccine to older people.

Interesting how divergent the approaches are panning out to be across countries, depending on their priorities and policies. It's going to give some very interesting comparative studies in the future.

Had one of those lateral flow test. Cost aside and what happens when someone in a queue tests positive, maybe they could work for future events.

I'm sure most of the time was taken up by filling in details to the government website and having the result inputted back into the system, to then send me the result.

The express saying domestic holidays then - but other papers saying 'staycations' in May.... this is the problem with leaks I guess

quick ibiza & balearics update:

the situation is looking much, much better now. from 400 new daily cases here on ibiza just after the holidays, we are now back down at 20-30 new daily infections and just in the last days, the hospital/ICU pressure is finally decreasing. see graphs below for incidence. ibiza is still too high, but going in the right direction.

I think at the start of march terraces of bars and restaurants might open again and then very slowly more and more things will open back up. maybe ibiza will be a little delayed compared to the other islands, but generally, spring will see life coming back gradually.

starting from march the vaccination campaign should also finally make some real progress as vaccine lots to the EU get bigger.

Looks like no foreign travel till at least October in the UK will be confirmed over coming weeks.

Had two weeks booked in July but going to move to 2022. Depressing and costs £150 to amend it but what else can you do?

Build up to a holiday not knowing whether you have to quarantine, test, have a vaccine or not doesn't sound like a holiday anyway.

Not buying this.

Story today that the government are working on plans with Greece.

I just can’t see countries not having any tourists when the PCR testing before arrival seemed to work last year.

This year with Vaccines plus much larger proportions of people having been infected thus inreasing “population immunity” means there’s even less risk, providing you present a negative test before travel, or prove you’ve been vaccinated, which looks the way it’s going.
