Who
This  ... if what we're being told to believe about how many kids have been disadvantaged by education disruption this year is correct, they should all be spending the Summer back at school anyway - gut god forbid their holidays should be impacted on
Agree with the sentiment but who is going to teach them?

Teachers have been working throughout and no way will the unions agree to them working through summer. Also who will pay the extra wages for it? They aren't paid for those two summer months.

Very good

@FlatErik you'll like this
"Reputable publications won’t lie, but the truths they choose and the way they present them are focused on what we’re already fretting about rather than the actual importance of any new information they have to impart. And yet we dig back down into it, repeatedly, obsessively, deeper and deeper, in the hope of hitting a seam of consolation "

Like David Mitchell's style in general - very clever

The numbers are astoundingly good. I almost can't believe that the Vaccine is 94% effective, feels too good to be true... But we have to trust the the real data.
I'd like to know more about the 6% - if they get covid what % are asymptomatic, what % have no more than feeling a bit dodgy, get properly ill (bed etc), end up in hospital seriously ill and what % go on to die....and also have those 6% underlying issues which make the virus less effective to start with?

Not to decry the news in any way....I'd be really happy if most of the 6% ended up just being a bit iffy for a few days and the vaccime prevented it getting any worse.

"A new study by Israel’s largest healthcare provider, Clalit, shows a 94% drop in symptomatic infections in people vaccinated for coronavirus, and a 92% drop in serious illness among those who do fall ill."

From the study linked a few posts up

only 544 people — or 0.1% — were subsequently diagnosed with coronavirus, only four suffered severe illness, and none died.
Yeah...what is "serious illness"? If the 540 were stuck at home in bed, struggling for breath, I'd call that towards the "serious" side, the medics might call it "mild. I just need a better definition...and did those 544 have underlying issues? Obviously as the vaccines kick in there will be accurate figures and I'm happy to be released to the wild once I've had the second jab, but there's always that nagging doubt in the back of my mind ..."what if?"

But again I underline I'm very happy with those results. Absolutely thrilled no-one has died after the jab.

Honestly, if you’re younger than 65 without any conditions, you shouldn’t be overly worried now.

With the vaccine, you shouldn’t care at all.

The article gives some detail.

“The study follows one by the Maccabi HMO published last week that showed that of half a million people vaccinated with both doses of the Pfizer vaccine, only 544 people — or 0.1% — were subsequently diagnosed with coronavirus, only four suffered severe illness, and none died.”

Safe to assume those 4 people were elderly.

Link: Boris Johnson says lateral flow tests could be used to reopen nightclubs and theatres (msn.com)

It may be unlikely soon, but the fact that it is getting talked about is a good thing!

“But what we are thinking of at the moment is more of a route that relies on mass vaccination…plus lateral flow testing, rapid testing for those bits of the economy that are the toughest nuts to crack, such as nightclubs or theatres, those parts of the economy we couldn’t get open last year, and I think that will be the route that we go down and that businesses will go down.”
