Closing down barber shops is pointless as long as there are precautions. Hopefully all those business owners are being bailed out over there.

Everyone and their brother is being bailed out in UK. The only really serious losers are company director-shareholders of owner managed incorporated businesses who took tax-advantaged dividends instead of salaries for years on end in the past and by saving tax/NIC in the past have shot themselves in the foot in the present .... and people who had been in business for under a year/changing jobs at the time the pandemic hit.

It's a policy decision to go against WHO in favour of your own scientists I guess - and that comes with political implications and consequences. It's highly unlikely but in the event AZ were ineffective in older people that caution would be borne out. However in the context of the ongoing crisis and socio-economic damage taking place, such a defensive stance might prove hard to justify in retrospect. Each to their own where policy is concerned !
Spain did the same choice.

Macron just repeated what the scientists of the scientific French Council say.
And he's not the only one.
For the moment our problem here is not the sceptical people, but the lack of dosis for the people who want to be vaccinated.
But the data didn't say that it was ineffective in over 65s, they believe there was a lack of data due to not enough over 65s in the trial contracting covid. Either the scientists were completely wrong or Macron announced the incorrect thing, gross incompetence from whoever made the mistake.
From the various explanations it seems that the scientists said exactly that, that there was a lack of data and they will wait for more, however Macron appears to have announced that the vaccine is basically ineffective for over 65s - Gross incompetence if so.

I’ve realised today my wheelie bin has been out more times than me since COVID started.

Haha. So have mine - not least because the bin men haven't made a single collection on the scheduled day since they changed up routes and subcontracted the work out in October. 17 years with barely a hitch and now it's descended into total chaos !

This is exactly what he said :

We have very little information on this vaccine, we are waiting to see the results of the EMA. Today it is believed to be almost ineffective for those over 65, "said the French president during a meeting with the foreign press, according to statements confirmed to AFP by the Elysee. "What I can tell you officially is that the first feedback we have today is not encouraging for those over 60-65 years old on AstraZeneca. So, for my part, I am waiting on the one hand the opinion of the EMA and, on the other hand, then, the expression of the High Authority of health (French, Editor's note) because they have the figures ". "Me, I have no data and I do not have a team of scientists who look at these figures for themselves", he admitted, however.

A little bit different from what you described, no?

That is false though. It wasn't believed to be almost ineffective, there just wasn't enough data to say it definitely was effective, those are two completely different things.
With something like that you need to be very clear, because as someone with authority people will listen to you, people will choose not to take the vaccine because they've seen this headline with an actual quote to say it's almost ineffective. That's gross incompetence and he's endangered his electorate, pretty much the worst thing you could say when you are a vaccine sceptic country.

Do you know that nobody cared about this story in France?
It's only in UK that it seems to be a (shit) storm.
And I bet that if this vaccine wasn't British you never had known this sentence...

We've been f***ed for the past 11 months, now ar we to be f***ed for the next 11 years?
*Adam Fleming is a respected BBC journo - not some random bloke on facebook (for those of you outside the UK!)
It feels like there's a bit of a disconnect here. At Westminster and in the media there's agonising over waiting 11 days for more clarity on summer holidays but scientists like Prof Sharon Peacock predict they'll be working on Covid for the next 11 YEARS.
Basically, if we are gonna be in and out of lockdown - and probably mostly in - until I'm 70+ I think I'd rather be outta here. It's no life and if we ever emerge out of this then by then other conditions (cancer/dementia etc) might well have taken over.

If we have to live with this > continual injections, some kind of restrictions > then let's stop the shitmongering and find ways that we can be "normal"; think outside the box, huh?

It's still early days relatively speaking and there's barely a hint of data on the impact of vaccines in the pioneer countries let alone the rest of the world. Honestly don't think we can be looking any earlier than 2022 beyond baby steps, reversals of policy at short notice and over-cautious policy responses. I would be very surprised if leisure travel without major hasstle, vaccination, testing, temperature checks, risk of quarantine etc etc returns inside 2-3 years from now. It will take decades to pay off the economic costs of all this and I would be most surprised if the social response adjusts back for a very considerable time.

Asian countries have pretty much normalized mask-wearing for example after experiences with much less contageous viruses like SARS etc. The days of happily jumping on a plane at a few hours' notice for a carefree weekend (as I always used to) I fear are over for the foreseeable future.

I actually think the opposite; people have lost too much money by the flights flying but the pax not being allowed to travel that many, like myself, will be put off booking in advance. So for the next 2 - 3 years, maybe "last minute" booking will become the norm?

Wonder what the feeling is on here (a holiday forum) - has anyone been put off booking in advance?

For so long as you have to get PCR tests within 72 hours of flying and wait for a lab turnaround, last minute bookings are going to be a headache If they were same day, you could catch a 6am flight next day, do 2 days and catch a midnight flight home without having to do another one at the other end. Let's face it, who wants to build in booking and going to a clinic for a Covid test to a 3 day Ibiza weekend ?
