No I agree, El Pais had a brilliant piece that covered how it would spread in offices, bathroom stalls etc... and there's been surprisingly little work done on this - our office for example was careful to make sure the air conditioning wasn't going to be a spreader of the virus and in some places I went to in Venice they'd disabled the air-con because it was only able to re-circulate (so that 32 degrees at 11pm in August was f***ing lovely when trying to sleep), but yeah generally I do agree the focus has gone from prevention to vaccination without enough of an emphasis on how we may have to live with it going forward.

Did you even read his thread?

The point is that, irrefutably, lockdown saves lives. You can argue about reduced life expectancy from an enforced lockdown, but I'll tell you what reduces your life expetancy more: Covid.

The 10% that don't have Covid-19 listed as a main cause of Covid will likely be people who had a severe underlying condition or were already ill - and Covid has sadly exacerbated those issues.
I did. Did you?
Lockdowns might save lives indeed...or saves them temporarily till you lift the lockdown again. We're lucky vaccins have been found so relatively quickly.

But lockdowns can also costs lives. In multiple ways.

@ElrowLovers.

Yes. And if you had, you'd see him explain why lockdowns save lives (no might about it).

Have you actually got any evidence that lockdowns cost lives btw? Because I've seen recent articles stating that there's been no evidenced rise in suicide rates.

Head of Intensive Care Unit in a big hospital in the Netherlands just asked our government for a change in the vaccination program in a talkshow on National Television.

The elderly get priority now, but he says it would be more effective to prioritize - middle aged to older men with overweight - because this is the target group that ends up on the ICU. He even states that if we change that strategy, the country could open up months earlier, because the pressure on the hospitals would be gone.

There's no evidence for anything yet...neither for the claims that person on Twitter makes...so that's why I'm using might and can.

This explains why some U.S. officials were wearing two masks during recent press conferences - I thought they were mad, but it seems they were just following the advice from the top expert 🤣

I doubt his reasoning though - no mask fits perfectly, wearing too many mask layers means the air you exhale will likely go out unfiltered between the mask and the face.

Good thing mass vaccination is around the corner - because the government reaction to the pandemic gets more and more stupid, with the effort counting more than the result. And I am not a Covid sceptic - I wore masks before they became mandatory :(
This.

Also what I was aiming at a few post back about the French approach too.
Upping the effort seems to be counting more than analyzing the results.

frustratingly, logistical delays mean vaccine shortages.. AZ letting the side down here

The EU hasn't even licenced AZ yet ! The production issues are in the Benelux production plant, seemingly the same area there are problems with Pfizer (albeit for different reasons).

Instead of making it a political issue about UK supplies being diverted (or not) to cover EU production delays, why are the EU not asking AZ whether they can divert some US or Indian made supplies instead ? I have to say on this occasion I don't think EU did themselves any favours taking so long to licence AZ or delaying orders for 3 months longer than UK. We are having to wait a long time for our Moderna quota on account of being late to the table with orders but when it's about a UK produced supply the EU waste no time accusing AZ of giving Britain priority as the biggest initial customer of the AZ. It's precisely this sort of thing which will only add fuel down the line to the separatist Brexiteers !.

@stivi That potential treatment you mentioned the other day really making the rounds on a bunch of news outlets. Still needs to go through the final phase 3 testing, but it definitely has some legs. Worst part is we gotta wait until prob summer until testing is done. Shit happens sooo sloooowww.

They must be very socially conscious to worry about how many layers their mask has. Took my mum for her vaccination (AZ) at the Plymouth Argyle football stadium today - after getting through all the check stations they were doing the vaccinations in the members' lounge. Not one person in a filter mask including the vaccinators, just disposable face coverings. Pretty shocked tbh considering the likelihood of close contact exposure to infected people doing that job must entail.

I had saved a FFP3 mask each for us from the supplies I bought in March and we also used face shields. The rules are all about reducing risk of infecting others but I think people forget you can actually protect both others and yourself with a higher spec mask. My logic was having effectively shielded even from a supermarket this has to be the single biggest exposure risk we were likely to get and the last thing I wanted was her getting infected whilst going for a vaccination !

Btw ... all in all the whole thing was extremely well organized with an army of volunteers. Only second day open and was running very efficiently even with about 90% of the people there being wheeled around in wheelchairs !!!!

My mum and dad said the same about where they went. My dad was called on the phone and invited very politely if he'd like his, then they asked how old my mum was , and when they found out she was over 72 , they said she could come along for hers. Very civilized, and efficient when they arrived.

It's hard to know whether to be bit empathetic towards these people for believing nonsense and just wanting their family member home.
Or infuriated at such bollox and endangering staff and patients

The second option. I'm not one for censorship but there needs to be something done about the spread of outrageously dangerous and wrong information when it can cost lives.

Let them go - and if their family member dies charge them all with manslaughter

If only it were as black and white as that. The health care profession has a duty of care to protect the patient, but if the patient withdraws their consent there's not much they can do, very distressing situation there.

Some people are genuinely scared/worried/confused and just want whats ( in their view ) best for their loved one, and they will clutch at straws...
But the guy in this video seems like a wanker!

There's no way to censor it in this day and age
Censoring actually just adds fuel to the flames.

More fact checking sites and articles is the way

If they have Covid we can keep them there
