Depressing Government briefing. New British variant may be more deadly after all. Israel suggesting the Pfizer vaccine may not be as effective as claimed. They don't know if vaccines stop the spread or just protect the person vaccinated.

R rate down and more and more vaccinated is about the only positives on a dreary cold Friday night :(

They should get you on there with your vast knowledge of virology, epidemiology and social psychology

So virus mutations always become more contagious and less severe? Interesting. You may be mistaken for what mutations generally do over an extended period of time but virology is obviously one of your specialities so I will defer

What I found incredible was his warning about the limited and incomplete data coming from Israel whilst delivering a doom and gloom message with equally very limited data.

Public confidence in their science and health messaging is already pretty low, coming out with yet unproven studies doesn’t help their campaign imo.

I think the public have a right to know and I doubt they would be up there saying it without serious concerns. They seem to downplay what they can and reassure when possible (Bozza clearly too much). I just don't get how that is fearporn personally

I don't like the term Fearporn either.

I'm normally supportive of the Government and Scientists briefings but I found tonight's to be a bit too much 'if, but, maybe, might be' and not sure if it was beneficial for the general public to hear all that. I never paid much attention in Science but consider myself educated and I've been left more confused. I imagine other parts of the population will have been completely lost on what todays message was.

It felt a bit that we are worried and want you to know but yes, very vague and not well put across. If the 30% to 40% is correct then I think we have a right to know, I assume the theory is strong enough for them to feel they have to say, especially how on a knife edge we are currently

Same happens in The Netherlands.
That's why I think the term fearporn is appropriate.
Our prime minister said we are gonna need an evening curfew, not because of the regular Covid virus...nah those numbers are going good so we could have even thought about loosening up the lockdown. BUT!!!!! There it was...all of the sudden...the super scary British variant. Our prime minister said it's basically a second pandemic we know nothing about yet, so we must stay in lockdown longer and even add a curfew to it.
I don't need to have knowledge about any topic to be able to call this fearporn, just common sense...a thing most people seem to have lost because of being scared. So fearporn works.

I just read some posts here about people not knowing anyone having commited suicide because of lockdowns...wow.
We should not deny Covid, but denying the severe side effects of the inhumane measures is just as bad.
 
There was some leaked info here...about talkshows and tv hosts getting influenced by the government to keep inviting virologists and keeping people scared. That was important to keep everyone abiding the rules. If you could understand dutch I could send you the audiofragment. There have also been journalist speaking openly about the fact they are being pushed by the government to keep sending the same message.
That's spreading fear, isn't it?

If people here don't like the word porn I will refrain from using it and just watch it.

In the UK new cases significantly down (compared to the same day last week - as all days have been down recently), hospital admissions stable (will start to go down) and deaths stable (ditto).

It's possible the numbers of new infections could get to 25/100k or less by the end of the month-ish, but if they opened up they risk the figures accellerating again. The next decision day is 15th Feb, and there will be pressure from both sides. Even though I don't want this - I'd say severything closed until Easter BUT give us a guarantee that - if the figures are low - places WILL open up and be like the "old" tier 2.

I appreciate its a fine line between being seen as burying bad news and being open but possibly scaring and confusing the public. But for now I'd rather they concentrated on reminding people to stay in but go out and get a Vacinne when offered.
