We will be top of the pile like even other country in the 1st world and theres no way the pay offs are going to pay off all the 3rd world countries, my point is we should me very grateful for the position we are in

Lots of statiscs, but that could meant anything, what does that in real treams? As in what you can tell me rather then graphs?

"The COVAX pillar is focussed on the latter. It is the only truly global solution to this pandemic because it is the only effort to ensure that people in all corners of the world will get access to COVID-19 vaccines once they are available, regardless of their wealth."

So basically they "buy" vaccine doses from money put into the fund by countries then they distribute it on need. (Buy as in get manufactured, get new vaccine candidates made etc. Guess sort of like a co-op)

Let's hope it actually pans out like that!

Even at cost it will be expensive for a third world country to roll it out for the whole population
This is one area where Africa have an advantage, the median age is only 19 years old, which is of course a bit advantage.

There is a global vaccination partnership, called Covax that has been set up to pay for vaccines in third world countries.

Patients have turned down the chance to have the Pfizer coronavirus vaccine because they want "to wait for the English one", a doctor says.

@DAaronovitch
Fine. There isn't much you can do with people who are being that stupid. Except feel sorry for them.

It's possibly no coincidence that South Africa, with a median age of 27, which is quite a lot above the African average (UK is 40 for contrast), is one of the hardest hit African countries in terms of deaths. It's not just about them doing more testing than most or Covid deaths being missed in poorer African countries.

This may very well counteract some of the negative consequences of delays delivering vaccines to poorer countries, although clinically vulnerable younger people will obviously be disadvantaged to the extent limited healthcare provision has not already shortened their life expectancies. Some interesting stats here :

But, but the hospitals are empty!
Theres mores cases because they are doing more tests.
The pcr test is only 7% accurate...

Yeah, I've seen all sorts of rubbish. Makes me angry that even some formerly sensible people appear to have fallen for very obvious misinformation.

Very small sample size, but of the 21 of us on my main WhatsApp group, 4 of have had positive tests, 3 with symptoms.

Interesting that the UK now require a negative COVID test for flights and all passengers (UK residents or not) from next week. If this stays in place how would Ibiza cope with thousands of tourists needing to get a test before flying home?

Friend of mine tested positive yesterday. He was flying back from Qatar earlier this week and had to show a negative test before boarding. He says the only plausible place of transmission was plane/airport...

@Hally (and others in healthcare) keep up the great work! It sounds like it’s getting rougher by the day. It must be annoying to hear empty praise from one part of the population (materialized with a 1% pay raise) and conspiracy-like thoughts from another (it’s only a mild flue). Hang in there ?? I’ll pitch in for an extra Vodka Limon ;-)

Feel sorry for them? They can do one. Three cheers to them if it means I get pushed up th queue a bit.

What could possibly have happened in early September? Let me think....
A worrying thing is in this lockdown, schools are still seeing 50%+ of pupils still turn up due to changes in what is a key worker etc.

So my concern is they know schools are a key "seed" for spreading infection, but they ain't really closed.

Epidemiologists on bbc is saying that really needs to change if want to get it under control.

Median age for ICU admission for Covid is 61

Something something shield the elderly
That's for the UK or global average?

For the Netherlands, these are the current numbers:
67 is the median age for Hospitalization
70 is the median age for ICU admission

Of all ICU admissions here...1 in 5 patient does not survive and again...nearly all of the deceased suffered from underlying conditions.
Shield the elderly and vulnerable is not a weird thought with these numbers. Especially with vaccin programs started everywhere. There is an endgame in sight so it's not shield them for an unknown amount of time anymore.

And more recently

To shield vulnerable successfully requires the rest still to be very careful and keep measures that reduce transmission. So if isolate vulnerable and rest kinda go back to some kind of normal, you're not really protecting the vulnerable. ?‍♂️

As said before, 60+ yr olds ain't going to student house parties but still getting it. QED high community transmission means all at risk even if try and shield.

Underlying conditions is a load of crap to. The right wing press have latched onto this recently with stats for those that died ‘without underlying conditions.’ But a lot of them are not conditions that affect quality of life in normal circumstances. I think even asthma counts ? Some people with ‘underlying conditions’ can be things that in no way impair their health or life.

Yeah, you got asthma, could have lived to 80+. Sorry off you go and pop your clogs. 1/3 uk pop is classed as overweight. Bye off you shuffle.?

Also there are huge numbers of people who are cares for their relatives, so they would need to isolate.

Also interestingly half of admissions where for people under 60?‍♂️ (2nd article)

If they're not sneaking round each others' houses for coffees or seeing their adult kids and grandchildren, look no further than the pub and the bingo.
