I get you, but i think with the dangers for old and sick people so great with this virus, i think a season without tourism is well worth sacrificing.
The idea that the most vulnerable residents of the island would literally have there lives put at risk so outsiders can party here is crazy. Hopefully the lack of visitors will give some form of protection to the Ibicencos.
Hopefully things will be back to normal for next year.
Great post

The problem with Ibiza and other such destinations is that while we will sacrifice our holidays and it be a relatively minor inconvenience, over there they depend on it for income and taxes and it will already be causing a lot of hardship. Not just directly, but indirectly too.

exactly. while we are typing, people on the island are already losing their jobs left, right and centre. I'm not joking.

I popped for a few pints last night. Only a few mind, had the school run this morning (something I won’t have to worry about next week)

Met two mates, as I’ve been away grafting since February and with the probably inevitable UK lockdown that is coming we needed one last pint together.

Also we are supposed to be planning a stag doo. Obvs I was pushing hard for Ibiza, but the majority wanted Las Vegas. It’s all purely academic now anyway. Not a chance of any of it happening, not even the wedding by the look of things (no biggy, I’m pencilled in as best man and it’s a commitment I can do without if I’m honest)

Felt like a naughty 16 year old sneaking into a boozer, or like some prohibition era secret drinking den. People looking furtively over their shoulders etc. Bar staff sort of looking at you through squinted judgemental eyes.

We were talking about how people these days are really into gyms and fitness, and a lockdown will be torture for them. Came to the conclusion that I’m going to build a gym in my garage using paint tins etc so I can ride out the lock down without going insane and strangling my kids and missus.

The late 80s early 90s saw people gathering at illegal raves in warehouses etc, I reckon we’ll see people having illegal CrossFit/spinning gatherings in similar disused places.

I think I’ll go out running in the dead of night, dressed all in black. Will be like some real life version of that film Escape From New York or The Running Man.

I’m possibly going to be laid off work for around 3 months. Might get round to reading some books and doing all those little housejobs my missus keeps hassling me about. Might even finally learn Spanish so if I do ever make it out to the White Isle again I can actually chat to people when they mistakingly approach me assuming im a Spaniard due to my dark skin.

Interesting times we live in.

To think literally a few weeks ago people were heavily debating on this forum about the lack of female DJs etc on certain line ups, or set times not being long enough or whatever.

Reality has booted us firmly in the nuts, hard.

The problem, as I see it is that a virus is not something that you can "defeat". Imagine we let the economy (of the entire world) collapse to save millions of lives, globally. Now you have impoverished the entire planet simultaneously, billions homeless, billions of malnourished (newly vulnerable populations). Everywhere is suddenly what we describe as 3rd world.

With economies crippled governments as we know them dont work like they currently do. The health system will collapse anyway, and permanently. There will be more viruses in the future.

What is the exit strategy?

One of the experts said 18 months of this is required. A modern, globally integrated economy cannot withstand that. Supply chains for raw materials? Fire protection, police, Utilities and garbage collection? Agricultural and industrial food production? Thats millions of people in each country that cannot stay home for 18 months and will potentially pass the virus, making the quarantine pointless.

This reminds me of one of those situations, like 2003 where we where led to war by experts not fully understanding the consequences of what we were getting ourselves into.

Not wishing for any of this, BTW. Just the other side of the coin. The world will do what it does, we will deal with what comes regardless.

It’s a shit situation, and similar here in the UK.

Even if this whole crazy scenario sorts itself out, I probably won’t be able to afford to pay for my planned July visit to Ibiza.

Schools are probably going to be shut here until the summer holidays. My missus works in a school so is out of work, and I’m probably going to be out of work for a few months at best, maybe longer.

We’re in survival mode.

My missus isn’t coping very well at all mentally, and the kids are starting to pick up on it too.

I imagine many families both UK and Ibiza (and everywhere really) are in the same boat.

I reckon people losing jobs feft right and centre, compared to an island unnecessarily losing its elderly inhabitants is a fair trade off.
Its actually quite a good thing in a sense that without tourism this year, the Ibicencos will be more insular and protected than the rest of the population. People in cities are sitting ducks and the surges of cases and deaths are rising everywhere.
The fact Ibiza thrived on an industry that it can pull the plug on when necessary in order to protect its inhabitants just makes the island even more special.
Hopefully the government pump money to the island wben it needs it as im sure its happy to collect the taxes in good times.

you heard that also supposedly 'healthy' people have died of covid-19. that. and while you're at home feeling well you may carry the virus and simply not be aware of it.
Yes, unless you quarantine yourself for 4+ months and don't even leave to buy groceries or food, you could potentially contract it and die.

You've got a around 0.5% chance of dying (if you get infected) if you're between 15 and 64.

I think humanity will be fine.

Getting on it while avoiding society is really pretty unlikely to increase your risk any more than getting on it generally does.

And for kids, it's an even better story.

"The chance of serious illness from coronavirus infection in younger people was so low, the scientists estimate a fatality rate of zero."

Thanks makes me feel better! Anxiety dosent help

Anyways - I'm with several other posters on this thread; the economic impact of this will be far, far worse than the death toll.
Money more important than people losing their lives?? Do say more
I wouldn't be too cocky about being young and not being killed by it either. Look at the figures, 1 in 5 hospitalised in some capacity regardless of age. Just let that sink in.
Kids are fine, but how fine if both parents end up in hospital.
The whole world's economy is f***ed. Things will bounce back.
Governments can reason with banks, they cant with a virus. Bit of luck a combination of a working treatment and people being responsible will stoo this thing soon.

Lots of reasoning to do for sure.. if we gunna be off work for months mortgages, utility bills and council tax will be last priority if people can just afford food.
