A family friend got laid off today and the entire business (a multinational retail operation) is closing up shop, for good.
As I mentioned before, I feel the cure is worse than the disease.
Whereas every single actual medical expert can’t stress enough how serious this actually is.I’m no medical expert but I can’t help but feel we’re every so slightly over egging this.
Problem is best case with lockdown is "tens of thousands of additional deaths", as told by the chief scientific advisor to the select committee. Hundreds of thousands without lockdown.I agree. At some point we are going to have to decide as a planet whether letting the entire economic system crash with tens of millions people losing their jobs is worth saving tens of thousands deaths. Personally I’m not sure it is.
Let’s remember there has ‘only’ been 8,000 deaths of this thing in two and a half months of its existence. I accept that’s 8000 individual tragedies, but by way of context in America there were 20,000 deaths of normal flu alone this winter... many of those who have passed away were elderly and already very ill. I’m no medical expert but I can’t help but feel we’re every so slightly over egging this.
While in some countries people worry about Noodles or loo paper ...

I would say id prefer no job and the chances of a recovery at some stage than loose a relative to a virus unnecessarily.I agree. Nearly 1.5k deaths in Italy in THREE days for a country that is on lockdown. I think its a bit more serious than the flu..I agree. Death rate in Italy is like 8% - and that is not some 3rd world country. Death rate in the UK is about 3%. And that is with the lockdowns already in place. And let’s not forget we’ve barely been testing people.
you Can’t compare this to normal flu in any way
Probably not the most popular opinion, but i cant help wondering will a year off for the island to it some good. Obviously financially the island heavily relies on tourism and i dont know what type of bail out package the government will give to the balearics, but im sure there's probably a lot of locals who wouldn't mind being able to enjoy their own island in peak season without traffic jams and madness.
Not to mention a year break from the pollution and waste discarded on the island during the summer.
That said i will definitely miss the place tbus year.
How do I do with a video I wanna show here? It's say It's too big!
I think it might also be an eye opener to the hardliners against tourism here on the island.
I get you, but i think with the dangers for old and sick people so great with this virus, i think a season without tourism is well worth sacrificing.no doubt that from a pollution point of view, the global lockdown has its positives. not just in ibiza, but all around the world. already now, air quality in china is the best it has been in decades, in venice the water in the canals is crystal clear and animals are coming back etc etc etc.
apart from that though, I can't see any positives for ibiza to have a 'year off'. I've always been transparent in that I personally also think the island needs a limit on tourism (things like a cap on rental cars, limiting or directly prohibiting the floating dustbins that are cruise ships etc). but an entire season off will have heavy ramifications for everyone that will way outweigh the positives mentioned above. I think it might also be an eye opener to the hardliners against tourism here on the island. some balance may be in order yeah, but without tourists this island also misses its colour in summer. it's the cosmopolitan crowd that makes ibiza such a special place.
slowly coming to terms with the fact that covid-19 will change our lives for a few years to come, period.
