A family friend got laid off today and the entire business (a multinational retail operation) is closing up shop, for good.

As I mentioned before, I feel the cure is worse than the disease.

I agree. At some point we are going to have to decide as a planet whether letting the entire economic system crash with tens of millions people losing their jobs is worth saving tens of thousands deaths. Personally I’m not sure it is.

Let’s remember there has ‘only’ been 8,000 deaths of this thing in two and a half months of its existence. I accept that’s 8000 individual tragedies, but by way of context in America there were 20,000 deaths of normal flu alone this winter... many of those who have passed away were elderly and already very ill. I’m no medical expert but I can’t help but feel we’re every so slightly over egging this.

Problem is best case with lockdown is "tens of thousands of additional deaths", as told by the chief scientific advisor to the select committee. Hundreds of thousands without lockdown.

Just for the UK.

That's why they shit themselves early this week and introduced the measures they said would be weeks away just this weekend gone.

And why america banned gatherings of more than 10 people, cause the models show biggest affect on outcome was number of people gathering in one place.

Also I believe it was a pangolin that was the intermediate animal for transmission from bats to people. (Their scales are valuable). China has now introduced a law banning all wild animals from been eaten/caught .

Death rate in Italy is like 8% - and that is not some 3rd world country. Death rate in the UK is about 3%. And that is with the lockdowns already in place. And let’s not forget we’ve barely been testing people.

you Can’t compare this to normal flu in any way

I can see a post apocalyptic Fallout style Coronavirus ps5 game coming out, with an eerie soundtrack of just a child singing Happy Birthday to me, over and over and over and over and over....

I would say id prefer no job and the chances of a recovery at some stage than loose a relative to a virus unnecessarily.
Id say the Italians feel the same right now and given the choice im sure they would if went into lockdown on the first weekend.
f*** the economy, it will bounce back. We cant just have a mass cull of old and sick people just because people dont think they can afford to miss their mortgage payments . I think quite a lot of people are actually in denial of the severity of this even for fit and healthy people.

Nearly 1.5k deaths in Italy in THREE days for a country that is on lockdown. I think its a bit more serious than the flu..
The 'elderly and ill' have the same rights and human value as the rest of us

Here in France, the situation becomes very difficult, and French indiscipline will make things even more serious.
Half of the patients in intensive care for this virus are less than 60 years old.
The health system is already saturated in the regions most affected by the virus.
The mortality rate is currently 3%, but we already know that it will increase when hospital services are overwhelmed within 2 weeks.
The flu death rate was 0.2% here this year.
NO, THIS VIRUS IS NOT A SIMPLE FLU.
STAY HOME !
RESTEZ CHEZ VOUS !
Quédate en casa!

This is a preview of what's to come imo, as soon as the NHS is overwhelmed our death rate will rapidly increase. The current rate is only low because we are able to treat people.

https://studylib.net/coronavirus-growth is a useful tool to see where we are, the response here is just woefully inadequate in comparison to SK.

Probably not the most popular opinion, but i cant help wondering will a year off for the island to it some good. Obviously financially the island heavily relies on tourism and i dont know what type of bail out package the government will give to the balearics, but im sure there's probably a lot of locals who wouldn't mind being able to enjoy their own island in peak season without traffic jams and madness.
Not to mention a year break from the pollution and waste discarded on the island during the summer.
That said i will definitely miss the place tbus year.

no doubt that from a pollution point of view, the global lockdown has its positives. not just in ibiza, but all around the world. already now, air quality in china is the best it has been in decades, in venice the water in the canals is crystal clear and animals are coming back etc etc etc.

apart from that though, I can't see any positives for ibiza to have a 'year off'. I've always been transparent in that I personally also think the island needs a limit on tourism (things like a cap on rental cars, limiting or directly prohibiting the floating dustbins that are cruise ships etc). but an entire season off will have heavy ramifications for everyone that will way outweigh the positives mentioned above. I think it might also be an eye opener to the hardliners against tourism here on the island. some balance may be in order yeah, but without tourists this island also misses its colour in summer. it's the cosmopolitan crowd that makes ibiza such a special place.

slowly coming to terms with the fact that covid-19 will change our lives for a few years to come, period.

I get you, but i think with the dangers for old and sick people so great with this virus, i think a season without tourism is well worth sacrificing.
The idea that the most vulnerable residents of the island would literally have there lives put at risk so outsiders can party here is crazy. Hopefully the lack of visitors will give some form of protection to the Ibicencos.
Hopefully things will be back to normal for next year.

True, but i think Ibiza gets a disproportionate amount of visitors compared to its own population. Great in the good times, but in the middle of a pandemic i think lockdown is the only solution right now, especially with so few cases reported on the island.
Its shown you really only get one chance with this thing, and i think when it does eventually pass, the body counts will be very much associated with when places went into full lockdown.
Its shit, but at least it gives people a chance.

could be a good opportunity for some genuine soul-searching about the kind of island you want to promote.

more socially and environmentally conscious, more diversification, less greed-driven

but I can't see it happening when 2021 will be a race to recoup lost revenue
