How come since we’ve all been forced to wear masks, the cases have risen?

Surely they should have went lower now?

Are people just generally f***ing it all off now and can’t be arsed?

I saw people on the news this weekend bragging that they were going to make a big weekend of it before the 6 people limit starts today in the UK.

Death rate is very low also, or will that start creeping up again into the hundreds?

At times it feels like we aren’t really getting anywhere with this pandemic ?‍♂️

I hate that word now by the way, pandemic. Along with Covid and Coronavirus.

Social distancing too, that phrase can fcuk off as well.

Also hearing politicians saying ‘these are unprecedented times’ every second sentence is grating.

klangWolke is a cool saying though :D

Anyway, happy Monday morning ?

I hate it - every family event or whatever COVID is the new Brexit, some 'heated' debates about it, whats right , wrong etc. Even if you go in with best intentions not to discuss it, then it comes up at some points. I did hear of a family friend who caught it at the beginning of the year and definitely has some long term health effects. He is in his 40s, could run a marathon in 3h45m. Since having this mystery illness at the beginning of the year he has a cough that is still there after 4 months and however hard he tries / trains, can't get get much below a 4h30m marathon time (not running a full one of course, but looking at previous training times.) Will be interesting to see what research can be done on the impact on people that catch it.

I agree re: the current rates vs deaths. We don't get enough stats do we? I have family working in local hospital and they have said things have started to get bad again and actually pretty much as busy as they were in May which is not good to see. Also some suggestion that the infection rate is high because young people are getting it and getting tested, but so far it has not hit the same number of older people so deaths are low.

For a start, schools have gone back. Masks in corridors, but not in classrooms. In Scotland, we ran for a week or two without any masks even in corridors. My sis is a teacher and tells me the kids just don't give a shit.

It's spreading in the younger population. When it starts breaking into the older population again, deaths will go up.

Cases may have rised due to masks and people dropping their guard. BUT if the vast majority of cases are mild to unsymptomatic, and not fatal, does it matter?? Could be as alluded to that masks are containing enough of the virus to spread it more thinly.

Basically, the old have to keep away from the young. In schools, doesn't matter if the kids spread it around themselves, but does matter when it gets into teachers and ancillary staff. Then it goes home to their families etc.
Maybe there should be an apartheid system now where bars, cafes etc are either under 40's or over 40's only, or inside they have seperate rooms? Buses - young adults at the back, old cretins like me at the front.

Yup, let's hope that is how it pans out. Numbers of older people 70/80+ getting positive tests is increasing which is a worry. As well as in care homes.?

Goes to show you can't realistically isolate/bubble old and vulnerable as there are always interactions with rest of society.

Doesn't help that care homes are getting the weekly test kits, but results take a week or longer to come back ?‍♂️

Yeah I was thinking along the same lines mate with schools.

So, in Scotland the schools went back 3-4 weeks sooner than in England?

Did the infection cases reflect this in Scotland in order to tie it back to schools opening?

Also, sure I saw some stats saying it wasn’t the youngest with higher infection rates? Sure it was the young people in the 20-30 group?

Yes I think I read something similar to your friends situation (maybe on here).

Was in reference to keen runners not being able to regain their pace or VO2 max level they had prior to infection.

Quite worrying.

Notice Israel's going back to full lockdown. the number dying daily, for months, hasn't been above 22, isn't rising save for one odd day where there were 77, which I'm convinced is more to do with accounting rather than actual deaths.

Me thinks it's more to do with quelling the demonstrations....

Unlikely I'll use my flight in September now. Will need to consider whether it's worth transferring to next year... Not researched what the cost is.

considering using my vueling 'vouchers' for a trip to the Canaries in Dec but Spanish situation is so volatile - very hard to know what to do, amazed how anyone can plan anything...

The lowest cost of transferring my flights (I was thinking Malaga in the spring...) is £110 (basic transfer fee + luggage transfer fee), so not worth it. Could probably pick up a flight from scratch for less.

I think they're blaming increased infections on gatherings at home, but there does seem to be various reports of it being passed on at school.

balearics evolution is finally looking favourable again. it's only a few days and it's too early to shout victory, but it seems we're on a good way

I still wear a mask when going in to a shop or in a taxi.

I have found bars / pubs outside of the city centre to be quite relaxed about rules. They take your details, have a one way system and tables only but you can go up to the bar and be served etc.

Sheffield is close to being put back into lockdown according to local news, we are at 45 cases per 100,000 so if that continues to rise we will have more restrictions in place.

I guess lets say it takes 5 days for your immune system to get into gear and react properly (start to exhibit symptoms), and that if you have a low amount to start, 5 days replication isn't too bad. However if get a high load 5 days is significant & immune system really caught un prepared ?

Kinda like a leak in a water pipe outside. If its a trickle when you notice the ground is soggy when standing on it, bit of a problem. If it's been gushing, you notice the ground is soggy as you fall into the hole its dug underneath ? (?analogy police again lol!)

Someone who has mild symptoms probably can be shedding a lot of virus, but their body is already dealing with it. Bit like some studies show asymptomatic people can actually shed a lot of virus?‍♂️

But yeah it is all bit Russian roulette. Just don't go licking bus seat handles ?
Ahhh crap, was full on trying every public transportation handle ?

But they don't rise as quickly as before masks. Back in March, the number of new cases doubled every 3 days. Now it doubles every 2 weeks.
The main differences are, clubs are closed (less superspreading events) and - yes - the wearing of masks.

So it appears masks do bring an advantage, yet this advantage is not enough to fully halt the epidemic.

I hate that word now by the way, pandemic. Along with Covid and Coronavirus.
Just be happy it is a relatively benign runaway virus and not something like MERS (which killed 30% of those infected)...

In Brighton, very few people are now wearing masks in pubs. We seemed to be the only people wearing them to go inside and to go to the bar. Shocking to see so many people leaning over the bar not wearing a mask, almost in the face of the people serving.
