Looks to be alright news for the Oxford vaccine... whether I agree with it or not, other than a revolt, I think it’s our only pathway back to normal life

"The reaction that has been reported is not directly linked to the vaccine. The person who has had the reaction had an existing neurological condition. During a vaccine trial such events are common place."

It's funny how the conspiracy brigade will jump on it, suggesting it "proves" the vaccine is unsafe, when in actual fact it points to the process being as safe as possible
There are indeed conspiracy theorists jumping on this news (which is crazy I agree)....but...it's the mainstream media that picked this up with large headlines today as part of their fear-porn campaign. ??‍♂️

So what should they have done? Not reported it? They would've had a field day with that as well

I think that Guardian article does well in breaking it down into digestible segments and explaining it all in layman's terms. Not read any other articles, but im guessing the tabloids went for their usual subtly of a battering ram

They should report it, but with an explanation it's normal...and that the tests would probably resume within a few days. At least in some dutch newspapers they didn't...They just made some fancy headlines making it part of a daily-make-the-reader-scared campaign:

- reinfections
- double as much cases (also way more testing and still no increase of hospitalizations here)
- vaccin process halted because of severe medical issue test person
- long term medical issues (wich is common for everyone that's been in an ICU unit, not just for Covid)

Anyway, I can only speak for the Netherlands news now...but this is how it's presented here. Every day, more fear.
If there's no data to back up the fear, they'll just make one up, for example: Total people in ICU grows (and if you read the article or look up the source it was indeed about total ICU capacity and not about Covid at all..so could have been a sunny day with some motorcycle accidents I dont know).

The problem is, "they" have no control on how the press (and nowadays influencers) are going to spin it.

I don't see any big fear campaign here in Germany, but then I am quite picky about which press I read ;)

Science : Errors are essential for the progress. Problems too

Wonder how much this 6 person rule in the Uk will actually be enforced. Pubs and bars have had a pretty lax approach to enforcing it so far I have found...

Very hard to find out who actually lives with who, people live complex lives. Kids live in more than one house, couples who havent moved in together, people who work in one town during the week and go home to family at weekend, people who share flats etc

Councils struggle at the best of times due to fraud, people forgetting to fill forms in, and admin errors so what hope have pub landlords got trying to work it out?

Exactly! I'm no fan of the British media but this tedious "main stream media" (or "MSM") nonsense that's lifted straight from Donald Trump is pathetic. It's as if the parroters of this nonsense have some definitive source of truth that only they and a select few other people who follow the same dodgy Twitter accounts or read the same alt-right Russian websites are privy to. They don't seem to realise they are being played like fiddles by professional trolls and bot farms. There's no doubt that the traditional media are often corrupt and that current standards of journalism are poor but high quality journalism is vital in a democracy; trouble is, no-one wants to pay for it. However, this constant attempt to undermine all sensible journalism as some evil "MSM" blob because some crackpots on Facebook have cooked up some wild conspiracy theories is dangerous.

well said. Anyone who uses the ‘msm’ phrase loses credibility from me pretty much instantly.

Obviously it’s super important to be sceptical about what you read in the media, and to consume a wide range of stuff (if you only read The Telegraph, Express and Sun you’d think the UK govt was doing an incredible job fighting the coronavirus and ‘taking back control’ through Brexit). But I genuinely cannot get my head round people who think that some crackpot on YouTube knows more than armies of experts who’ve been working in their fields for decades. I like to hear a good conspiracy theory as much as the next person, but the vast majority just feel like a way to make stupid people feel clever.

Believe nothing that you read and only half of what you see
