Now I know governments enjoy a bit of a power, but to suggest any governments are enjoying imposing these lockdowns is bizarre IMO.
I think it's not a bizarre thought at all. I've seen a lot of examples of politicians actually using Covid as a tool for political agendas they had for years.
Red light district had to close during lockdown...mayor of Amsterdam who wanted to get rid of this area for a long time suggested to put art exhibitions in their windows. She was just trying to keep them away even after the lockdown. The red light district is now also one of only two areas in the Netherlands where a face mask is compulsory. Are other streets in Amsterdam less busy?
Our minister of Justice comes from a pretty old fashioned Cristian political party and he has been saying for years he wanted to get rid of the full festival agenda in the Netherlands because of the drugs and drug tourists. Do you think he cares if a few organizations go down?
In Rotterdam the mayor is now saying small bars are 'a thing of the past' and we need different ways of entertainment in the future. Say what? People have been enjoying themselves in bars for hundreds of years. Now due to a virus we need to get rid of our culture?
There's always a hidden agenda...even though it's not a planned hidden agenda, I'm not saying they invented a virus for it, but it's goddamn handy now. I can see it in every country. Travel bans means keeping tourism and the money in your own country, lockdowns means more control over citizens, closing bars means less nuisance of drunk people so less law enforcement needed, less festivals means less drugs and a better international reputation.
Besides that you also have the bigger hidden agenda's. Look at aviation. When our national airline almost fell victim to this financial crisis caused by the measures (yes, by the measures) the left-wing 'green' parties where so eager to put climate control measures as a demand for the state support. And our labour-party was the first to say that if the airline gets a loan the higher paid people and pilots must hand in their salaries. It's about misusing powers we, the people, gave them because of our initial fear of the virus.
The power, the attention of media, the manufactured fear, all heads of governments looking at each other right now and perhaps upcoming elections....I am not saying the enjoy the lockdown per se, I'm saying they are misusing it and not willing to take a step back even though it's possible to put a lot of power back into the hands of the people.
