Also saw at weekend there is mounting evidence that mask wearing helps to an extent the wearer from covid. (Previous thinking was it only protected others if you where infected)

This has been known since 2004:
Always wearing a mask when going out was associated with a 70% reduction in risk compared with never wearing a mask.
(source: Risk Factors for SARS among Persons without Known Contact with SARS Patients, Beijing, China)

But because governments were spreading lies about masks being useless (in order to prevent a run on masks when these were in short supply), they couldn't admit it right away, so the argument for "wearing masks in order to protect others" was born (which is valid in itself).

Why were we never told to wear a mask when the flu comes around.. or before the jab became a thing..
Yeah I understand that but flu is less nasty in that the incubation period is very short (few days), you get symptoms and stay in bed for say 5 days then over it. (Or if unlucky hospital)

Covid, it can take up to 14 days to show any symptoms, and you can be infectious 3 days before, spreading it around. Week or so to get better, but of moderate to serious can be months

Asymptomatic is a real big problem. Just look at anyone when you are out who look fine, infecting you and anyone else potentially. (25-40% are asymptomatic)
It also seems to trigger more severe immune response, as it fiddles with immune system levers in a none trivial number of people.?

Guess the short of it is covid has a long incubation period and that's why it takes weeks for the figures to change to changes in measures (3-6 weeks etc), and it spreads stealth like

This is what happens when you get politics involved in what should be a mostly straight forward health messaging. ?
Aka - life as "normal"

If a mask filters droplets escaping the mouth, then it should filter those going in. I've tried to read up all the on-line journals and it may be a case of the fewer particles you inhale, the less severe the infection.

That leaves your eyes as the only other point of entry. Swimming goggles for everyone wandering round Asda. Of course if face masks really do work, then that's not as daft as it sounds.

Some pretty interesting numbers coming from Norway today. Due to the precautions etc taken for Covid the deathrate for q2 is actually down(!) and lower than a normal quarter would have been. In particular the deathrate of older women is drastically down. The numbers are so low that funeral homes are getting financial Covid support from the state due to the lack of business which is quite ironic.
Now that we will start getting more data I think this will be a core question going forward; what is the net change in deathrate in counties ie is more or less people dying than normal. Once the net number is known and under control it is easier to move forward. Will be interesting to see what other countries start to report.

Spain's national case figures have now remained fairly stable, hopefully they will start to fall again if they have those areas under control again. What will be interesting is if three/four weeks down the line, there are a spike in deaths due to the lag catching/dying.

If there are very few deaths caused by this recent outbreak, maybe those of us that are left are strong enough to cope with and see off Covid, and it simply becomes another "flu" where it becomes accepted that a small number will catch Covid and die (just like flu)?

That's the hope. What I'd like to know is how many suffer life changing health complications (lung scaring etc) compared to normal flu.

With the Masks you do have to factor in people wont clean them properly, dont wear them properly and will use disposable ones repeatedly etc, there are some inefficiencies just because people are lazy, ignorant and/or tight.

But on the whole im happy to wear one of it makes a difference.

Few more stories popping up this afternoon from the mirror, express and evening standard about an imminent island airbridge.

Can’t see it personally tbf.

Yes I think I saw one of these stories too. Not sure if there is any truth in it, or if the media were having a slow day and trying to get their click count up.

I think im in a similar situation to you mate, booked up and due to fly in a few weeks time with my family

Always seems we have a glimmer of hope then it’s dashed within hours. It’s looking like I’m going to have to change tact and spend another grand going to Turkey instead for our family hol

the media do my head in at the best of times but especially this year, there should of been a ban on anything Covid related making the headlines that is purely assumption and guess work, every day I wake up to many sharing something that completely contradicts that tabloids previous headlines only days apart. it is getting beyond a joke unless its affiliated with a government official no one should take note.. if anyone didn't think the Sun needed boycotting before 2020 they really should be now! nothing but animals feeding on the panic

My wife and eldest both tests on Sunday and got negative results on Monday. My son hasn't been anywhere near anyone, just at home in our house and neither have we. yougest had a negative test the Wednesday before, ahead of a dental extraction and was negative. Again, hasn't been anywhere since.

My mum misses my boys terribly, more so with Dad intensive care and in hospital with no visiting allowed for 3 weeks now, with a similar 6 week stint in there 3 weeks before that

So...my youngest has a appointment this morning, but with negative test results yesterday, could it be safe to leave my eldest with my mum while I do her shopping? (She's 74)
