We've just booked to go to Tenerife, last week of August/first week of September. I can see the issue the masks might cause for you youngsters, but as they are not mandatory around the pool, where I shall spend the whole 10 days being beaten up a 7 year old and 5 year old, I think we won't notice the rule too much.

An unexpected bonus is the realisation that, as I work for myself, we can go for 10 days, with me working the first Thursday and Friday out there remotely, the Monday 31st is Bank Holiday where I wouldn't get paid anyway, so I can have 10 days holiday and only lose 4 days money.

I don’t think the canaries is as tough on masks as other parts of Spain (for the moment anyway). I believe you’re required to wear one indoors at all times and outdoors where you can’t guarantee to be more than 1.5m apart.

those of you downplaying this, seriously follow the news in Spain, India, USA... it is definitely not over.

over 18,000 new cases across Spain since the last lockdown ended.

a useful Spanish article here crunching all the stats (* note > an increasingly younger demographic affected)

We're being told all younger cases here now, under 30s.. you can see the fear in the older people out when they see groups of kids teenagers ect out walking or in shops.... Adding to more confrontations.. no end

My experience and most people I know is that the people that we see that are never wearing masks are in the 70+ category, I’ve probably seen 5-10 maximum in this whole period.
I rarely see people 55+ in a mask either, under that the take up is much higher.

things couldn't be more different here in spain. all elderly people are wearing one.

“Cases” is literally a useless metric. Testing is up, therefore cases are up. If a fisherman has one rod he catches less fish than if he casts 100 rods. The only important thing is how many people are dying or being admitted to ICU. Which is down. Drastically. I don’t understand what people get out of trying to spread terror. The numbers are the numbers.

"The gig is up with this virus"

It really isn't. What's changed is societies have become more savvy about how to manage it but that doesn't mean it's over.

It isn't just about the death top headline either.. the long-term effects are predicted to be horrendous

is Dr Fauci saying it's over? or Fernando Simon? you think these specialists are lying?

I think they are politicians dressed as scientists. Fauci told us 3 months ago masks were useless and now telling everyone they are absolutely necessary. And you wanna listen to this guy?
Sweden didn’t lock down. And now they are in the clear. Belarus didn’t lock down at all, didn’t even cancel large gatherings. Stadiums full etc. Low death rate.

hey look, believe whatever you want. But less people are dying now than normally do at this time of year. Especially in Europe. Meanwhile more children have died in the U.K. as a result of missing cancer treatment than have died of covid.

A quote i heard once that rang so true was along the lines of 'People in the UK born the generation after the 2nd world war talk and act like they were the ones that won the war' and something has never rung so true. In relation to brexit, the exact same group use all of the same kind of rhetoric on how Britain is GREAT and nothing can bring them down. They don't need a mask because they're brave.

I'll deffo be watching the numbers before we go to Tenerife and binning it off they look risky. The last figures I can find for Tenerife, rather than the Canaries as a whole are two weeks old, with 8 active cases among the 950k population at that point.

When do you go to Tenerife? I’m flying out there on the 2nd August. If that’s before you I’ll see what info I can find there and I’ll post in here so you know what to expect ?

Wouldn't trust Belarus's figures one bit.
But there's a fair point about Sweden, currently 5th (ignoring tiny principalities) in the list of deaths/population behind B,UK, ES, I so yeah, doesn't sound so bad, but if they had had full lockdown maybe they could be where Norway is, not even in the top 50?
Those that have died should be asked "were you happy that there was no lockdown or would you rather have had lockdown and survived?"
But again, if Sweden had lockkdown, would the figures have been so much better??
Looking at the tables though, it does appear that the countries with no/partial (SWE) or late (UK) lockdown suffered worst, ESP and I with bad figures can be explained by them beign first to gett he virus in large numbers, no time to lockdown.

My local big supermarket, 4 weeks ago was 50/60% masked. Last week I was pretty much the only person in one!

sorry but people like fauci or simón (the spanish pendant to fauci) couldn't be further from politics. if you did a little research you'd find out they've devoted their whole life to viruses and such, and yet they're being questioned by people who've seen a few questionable youtube videos.

as for masks - in a lot of western countries there wasn't enough stock at first so they had to keep them for the healthcare people. I understand that's not what they said in that moment, but various countries now admit that this was the case.

as for sweden - yeah one of the highest death rates in europe and they are now suffering major economic consequences since they are getting far less tourists than they usually would while their neighbours (who did lock down) are now in a far more 'normal' state again.
