True. But, speaking personally, I do think more and more about my lifestyle and changing various consumption habits. Few of us are perfect, but there's a big difference between really not giving a shit, and being open to learning and trying to change/make sacrifices.

One small change I have noticed near me is people are shopping at small shops like the Butchers and Greengrocers again, obviously wanting to avoid big stores and bigger crowds. Be interesting to see if that continues long term.

Working from home makes it easier for most though, easy to pop out for 15mins and get the food back home, impossible for me to do that when in the office.

So if the economy dies and the government is out of freshly printed money to create emergency funds and loans for everyone...no there will be no doctors and nurses.

If society collapsed tomorrow, money/credit would mean nothing. In fact a £20 note would be worth less than a toilet roll. I see it all as being about resources and people (people being a resource too, I guess). My arguments are along the lines of I don't think resources are used well (often for war, for example, rather than health/education), resources are unfairly distributed (some people have way too much, others have way too little) and we also take too many resources from the planet in an unsustainable way (economies need to move to being sustainable). That's my starting point in these sorts of arguments. ;) But maybe this is getting off topic.

Pretty much agree with everything ElrowLovers has said on this thread.

Oh, and it's good that London has basically seen zero new coronavirus infections in the last 24 hours.

We have to pay for our villa by the 26th - even though the owner has said they will adopt a flexible cancellation policy (4 weeks before, full refund), the booking itself hasn't change on HomeAway... not quite up for being trusting with that amount of cash!

There seem to be a fair few villas available now anyways... and tons for super cheap next year :D
I work for Home away we don't take payment 2 automatically from your card so can pay later if need be

Cancelation policy is one you agree to when you book it won't change.

If the owners said they would refund and be flexible that's great but if you are not eligible for a refund at the end we cannot force the owner to refund even if they advised they would

I think about all this stuff a lot because tourism is a constant hot potato here. But it is heavy though cos people want to forget this stuff on holiday. But... But... Awkward

From my egoistic point of view, I am all for moving manufacturing back to developed countries, so that billions of dollars we currently pay as wages for slave labor would instead go to well paid programmers, engineers and robot operators in our own countries. Cheap slave labor may look attractive in the short term, but not good at all for the development of technologies.

A lot of high quality clothes are Made in Portugal these days - it's still a preferred place of manufacture for suppliers wanting good quality workmanship with very nice materials. The problem is that (being mostly non-fashion stuff - fashion is a different world) price points are really steep for functional wear, about 3 times more than stuff which is run up in Asia. Is it 3 times better ? Probably not. Maybe 50% better. I still buy it to support small local brands who still value quality but the price differential can get hard to swallow sometimes !

Part of that is probably that they can;t get a home delivery or click 'n' collect slot for love nor money any more

I started to eat from the little taquerias and restaurantes in town, but Starbucks sucked me back in. Now I'm going to Whole Foods' (healthfood grocer here) burrito counter instead.

"The team of researchers estimate around 1.8 million people in London (20%) have already had the disease, suggesting they could have a higher level of immunity, making it harder for the bug to spread."

Shame Boris bottled it due to overwhelming pressure / public opinion.
This just isn't true at all. Testing for antibodies to reflect to many people have already had the virus are showing not as many of the population as first feared have been infected yet. Pretty much due to worldwide lockdowns.
As for Boris. If he listened to scientific advice from the rest of the world instead of taking a punt in that herd immunity bullshit i suspect the UK wouldn't have had tens of thousands dead.

Maybe the problem is the old economic model? Maybe this will force us to rethink whether success should be measured in GDP and whether constant economic growth is a sustainable way of living (clue, it almost certainly isn't). Interesting to see countries considering universal basic incomes and other radical ideas.
Absolutely agree. The problem is not even covid will change the greed for never ending short termism, and quick profit that is demanded by investors. The world would be a far better place if there was an element of decency in the markets. I’m not advocating socialism or anything like that, just thinking how fcked things are with the status quo.

600E fines for not wearing a mask, effective from today (give or take a few days grace)

basically the same fine you got for breaking the confinement. no big news there tbh.

I also want to point out again that currently, the mask rule is only planned for the rest of the state of alarm. we'll have to see whether it's gonna turn into a standard or not after that.

ibiza thread updated btw. another day without any new cases, five in a row now. 20 active cases left. we might indeed turn into a 'corona-free zone' for a while. don't get me wrong, I'm sure that, as we open up, we will see a few cases here and there and that's inevitable, but I also think that all governments have come to terms with that. we're carefully optimistic here.

Great news about the numbers in Ibiza. Hopefully you'll see zero soon enough!

I'm glad the fine on masks is a pretty big chunk of money - it definitely means more people will abide. And whether you agree with the masks or not, it's the law so I'm kind of in the mindset of 'just get on with it'.

the state of emergency keeps getting extended but there is massive pressure from the PP/VOX to end it. at the same time you've got EU people predicting a 'second wave' soon. so it is all very confusing to those of us without the expertise. on the one hand we have people urging us to get back to normal and on the other hand people saying this is nowhere near finished.

I don't mind wearing a mask actually even though it's all in the mind I do feel safer... I don't touch my face which I would normally do with it on and when I cough I don't feel like every one thinking I will pass it on to them
