True. But, speaking personally, I do think more and more about my lifestyle and changing various consumption habits. Few of us are perfect, but there's a big difference between really not giving a shit, and being open to learning and trying to change/make sacrifices.

So if the economy dies and the government is out of freshly printed money to create emergency funds and loans for everyone...no there will be no doctors and nurses.
I work for Home away we don't take payment 2 automatically from your card so can pay later if need bePretty much agree with everything ElrowLovers has said on this thread.
Oh, and it's good that London has basically seen zero new coronavirus infections in the last 24 hours.
We have to pay for our villa by the 26th - even though the owner has said they will adopt a flexible cancellation policy (4 weeks before, full refund), the booking itself hasn't change on HomeAway... not quite up for being trusting with that amount of cash!
There seem to be a fair few villas available now anyways... and tons for super cheap next year![]()
If society collapsed tomorrow, money/credit would mean nothing. In fact a £20 note would be worth less than a toilet roll. I see it all as being about resources and people (people being a resource too, I guess). My arguments are along the lines of I don't think resources are used well (often for war, for example, rather than health/education), resources are unfairly distributed (some people have way too much, others have way too little) and we also take too many resources from the planet in an unsustainable way (economies need to move to being sustainable). That's my starting point in these sorts of arguments. But maybe this is getting off topic.
From my egoistic point of view, I am all for moving manufacturing back to developed countries, so that billions of dollars we currently pay as wages for slave labor would instead go to well paid programmers, engineers and robot operators in our own countries. Cheap slave labor may look attractive in the short term, but not good at all for the development of technologies.
One small change I have noticed near me is people are shopping at small shops like the Butchers and Greengrocers again, obviously wanting to avoid big stores and bigger crowds. Be interesting to see if that continues long term.
I started to eat from the little taquerias and restaurantes in town, but Starbucks sucked me back in. Now I'm going to Whole Foods' (healthfood grocer here) burrito counter instead. One small change I have noticed near me is people are shopping at small shops like the Butchers and Greengrocers again, obviously wanting to avoid big stores and bigger crowds. Working from home makes it easier for most though, easy to pop out for 15mins and get the food back home, impossible for me to do that when in the office.
Can I ask what you think he should have done?"The team of researchers estimate around 1.8 million people in London (20%) have already had the disease, suggesting they could have a higher level of immunity, making it harder for the bug to spread."

Shame Boris bottled it due to overwhelming pressure / public opinion.
This just isn't true at all. Testing for antibodies to reflect to many people have already had the virus are showing not as many of the population as first feared have been infected yet. Pretty much due to worldwide lockdowns."The team of researchers estimate around 1.8 million people in London (20%) have already had the disease, suggesting they could have a higher level of immunity, making it harder for the bug to spread."

Absolutely agree. The problem is not even covid will change the greed for never ending short termism, and quick profit that is demanded by investors. The world would be a far better place if there was an element of decency in the markets. I’m not advocating socialism or anything like that, just thinking how fcked things are with the status quo.Maybe the problem is the old economic model? Maybe this will force us to rethink whether success should be measured in GDP and whether constant economic growth is a sustainable way of living (clue, it almost certainly isn't). Interesting to see countries considering universal basic incomes and other radical ideas.
