Is it true that many hotels will not re-open this year because they are expecting a very low turnout this summer and they can't keep their hotels open and fully staffed with a low turnout expected?

For some big hotels it could be less costly to stay mothballed and not reopen until 2021. Youve got the cost of hiring and training staff, filling and servicing the pools, buying basic food and drink staples etc not worth it for a short season with low income.

For some chains that have multiple hotels they may choose to open a smaller number of their hotels and fill those rather than have several at low occupancy.

when the pandemic first came about there was talk that the warmer weather could kill the virus off, I take it this was later disproved? not heard anything else about it

still no reliable data available about this...or at least I wouldn't know of any

U live in madrid? I am in Pueblo Nuevo Metro by barrio conception.

There is a little bit of life, not much at all, not many people in the streets and they only going supermarkets or tobacco shops

Yeh I will be working from home for a fe more months I reckon

no in BCN. i've seen some amazing pix of the empty Madrid streets around Gran Via. don't know it that well although that didn't stop some Spurs friends desperately asking me for places to stay last year!

The theory with flu, is that people are outside more in warmer weather and it’s harder to spread when outside than in a confined space inside. There is some evidence though that flu doesn’t transmit quite as well in the heat, but I understand it that the main reason is people outside. Of course a huge sweaty Ibiza club would clearly be a disaster, hot or not.

Strength of UV light also plays a part as it damages genetic material, and 'kills' viruses in the air more than in winter which has low UV levels.

Would be interesting to keep eye on southern hemisphere, as they are in autumn heading to winter.

curve of newly detected cases going down further in spain - 1.7% growth in last 24hrs, just over 3K newly detected cases in the entire country.

balearics and ibiza numbers to follow later in the other thread.

that said, as mentioned, yesterday was still a bank holiday so we might get the delay effect tomorrow rather than the usual tuesday.

Interesting for the big DJS that have their brands and doing tours, Afterlife, Music on, DC10, I wonder if they would still have to pay their staff still. I imagine so

Yeah..I'm not shooting the messenger cause I'm regularly posting articles for other to read too, but I must say I'm getting sick and tired of all the 'experts' that say distancing need to continue until 2021 or 2022. I know studies will point that out...but I'll say this: that's not doable. For no country, no society, nobody will keep up social distancing for over 6-12 months. Then people will start to go nuts and go against all the advices, creating new waves of outbreaks or a really nasty quick herd immunity after all.

A lot of the wording is things like 'may' 'could' and 'suggests' etc

Nothing concrete. Media just like printing stuff to seam relevent/current.
