daily update 5th april

balearics:
total cases: 1293
deaths: 75
recovered: 461
active: 757

ibiza & formentera:
total cases: 117
deaths: 6
recovered: 15
active: 96

today's good news is that the balearics is now the region where the spread is growing slowest in the whole of spain. there are only 22 newly infected people on the four islands in total in the past 24hrs and the number of active cases is slowly decreasing as more and more people recover. and as pointed out yesterday, it's generally looking a bit better finally in spain.

daily update 6th april

balearics:
total cases: 1320
deaths: 81
recovered: 531
active: 708

ibiza & formentera:
total cases: 126
deaths: 7
recovered: 22
active: 97

again the balearics is one of the regions with the smallest increasement of cases, only 27 newly infected people and the number of active cases keeps decreasing.

the central government will soon start a big testing campaign in the entire country to detect and isolate asymptomatic carriers of the virus before the lockdown shall graduallly get lifted. because of this, once that campaign is underway, the numbers will most likely rise again as currently a lot of covid-19 cases stay undetected because many people simply don't show any symptoms. still though, after three weeks of lockdown, the signs are definitely better now.

update email from Jet2:

In view of the ongoing uncertainty caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, we have taken the decision to recommence our flights and holidays programme on June 17th. This means that your flight will not be operating - please see the table at the bottom of this email for your affected bookings.

We will be contacting you to discuss your options, one of which is rebooking your flight to a later date. We know what a well-deserved holiday means, and how much it gives everyone something to look forward to, particularly during difficult times such as these.

We are continuing to operate a fully staffed call centre. Despite this, the number of calls we are currently receiving is unprecedented and is more than we can handle.

Therefore, we are proactively contacting all affected customers in departure date order, which we believe is the fairest way. Please be patient with us as we do this, and please remember – we will contact you.

So that we can call our affected customers, we’ll be taking less incoming calls. Please note, this will mean longer than normal call wait times.

The Covid-19 pandemic has resulted in everyone having to deal with difficulties and restrictions, and our business and our colleagues face these too.

Please do bear with us, and thank you in advance for your loyalty, understanding and patience.

daily update 7th april

balearics:
total cases: 1369
deaths: 84
recovered: 537
active: 748

ibiza & formentera:
total cases: 130 (only four more than yesterday)
deaths: 7
recovered: 24
active: 99

same as with the numbers in spain overall, it's a slight rise again compared to the previous days. as explained in the discussion thread, on tuesdays they announce the numbers as per monday night and it seems that during the weekend the numbers are underreported / delayed a little which always makes the tuesday numbers to be worse than the previous days. it was to be expected but it's not as bad as in previous weeks.

in the bigger picture, we're heading in the right direction. the rise in numbers might also already be affected by what I said yesterday, the fact more tests are being done now so asymptomatic cases are being detected rather than just people with symptoms.

daily update 8th april

balearics:
total cases: 1412 (+43)
deaths: 89 (+5)
recovered: 616 (+79!)
active: 707 (-41)

ibiza & formentera:
total cases: 130 (no new case in last 24hrs!)
deaths: 8 (+1)
recovered: 25 (+1)
active: 97 (-2)

in the policlinica del rosario in ibiza town they've started doing lots of testing now so we probably need to expect numbers to rise as there are most probably a lot more (asymptomatic) cases than what's been detected previously. https://www.noudiari.es/2020/04/la-...esta-realizando-los-test-rapidos-de-covid-19/

a member of the spanish government today hinted at a gradual return to 'normal life' starting from 26th april. in a first step maybe we'll be allowed to go on walks again and such, but it will likely be a very slow lift of the imposed measures. https://www.diariodeibiza.es/nacional/2020/04/08/montero-dice-que-los-ciudadanos/1135438.html

looking at national as well as regional covid-19 numbers and their evolution, what's clear is that we're on the right path and the curve is going down, but it's a slow progress/decrease and discipline and patience simply will need to be kept up in the coming weeks.

the national lockdown is currently still planned to run up until 25th april midnight. we expect that soon after the easter weekend the government will announce the next steps and measures for the period after that. and once those plans and measures are known, the promoters and clubs that currently still have events planned on the island for the month of may will certainly react accordingly and announce their plans.

also, in ibiza town, building work will be permitted all summer this year. usually, in the main tourism season from june to end of september, no building work is permitted, but in an attempt to get the economy going, this year an exception will be made. https://www.diariodeibiza.es/pitius...iento-ibiza-permitira-obras-este/1135454.html other municipalities might follow suit. EDIT: same for sant josep.

as countless other businesses on the island and elswhere in spain, pacha group have presented an ERTE (temporal reduction of employment) as it's becoming evident that their various properties (pacha nightclub, destino hotel, lío restaurant as well as their newly acquired hotel in formentera) won't be able to open on the originally planned dates. source here https://www.noudiari.es/2020/04/pac...mporada-turistica-y-avisa-a-sus-trabajadores/

at present, it's still impossible to tell IF and WHEN tourism (be that national and/or international) will return this summer. but as usual, we'll keep you up to date.

daily update 9th april

balearics:
total cases: 1448 (+36)
deaths: 89 (no new casualty in the last 24hrs)
recovered: 696 (+80!)
active: 663 (-44)

ibiza & formentera:
total cases: 131 (+1)
deaths: 8 (no new casualty in the last 24hrs)
recovered: 25 (same as yesterday)
active: 98 (+1)

so on ibiza and formentera we've only had one more detected case within 48hrs and on the balearics in total, the number of recovered cases is now for the first time bigger than the number of active cases.

poc a poc!

the following info isn't a confirmed thing yet, but one of the local newspapers has put this out which says the government is working on a plan which doesn't include international tourism this summer. national tourists yes, but according to that newspiece it seems likely the borders might stay closed this summer https://www.noudiari.es/2020/04/el-...-que-no-habra-turismo-extranjero-este-verano/ I repeat, this is NOT a confirmed thing at this stage but it does look like a plausible scenario. time will tell. at the same time, the island's hoteliers count on being able to open in june or july https://www.periodicodeibiza.es/pit...s-tendrian-muy-mal-para-abrieran-hoteles.html

in regards to yesterday's post where I mentioned pacha's ERTE, they are not the only club that have put in this measure. it's simply the only case that had made it into press until yesterday. thousands of businesses have requested this measure from the government already and more will follow.

as for hï and ushuaïa, according to this newspiece they are currently planning to open in june at best and in august as a worst case scenario https://www.elmundo.es/baleares/ibiza/2020/04/09/5e8df12cfdddff3c0f8b4596.html it also says part of the staff of the hotel group have been laid off (same ERTE measure as pacha)

I will keep on posting these articles, but I just want to stress that all those scenarios presented currently are pure theory right now and not hard facts.

daily update 10th april

balearics:
total cases: 1488 (+40)
deaths: 97 (+8)
recovered: 737 (+41)
active: 654 (-9)

ibiza & formentera:
total cases: 131 (no new detected case in the last 24hrs)
deaths: 9 (+1)
recovered: 34 (+9)
active: 88 (-10)

on a national level, the results of the past 24hrs have been the best in two weeks with the smallest number of deaths and a growth in new cases of 'only' 3%. on the balearics, half of the detected infected people have already overcome covid-19. it is small steps every day and it's clear that we only see the tip of the iceberg with a lot of undetected cases, but the fact the hospital / intensive care numbers are stable / going down gives hope.

also, the numbers for ibiza and formentera over the last three days have been really good. only one new detected case in the past 72hrs and more and more recovered people.

same as over on the mainland (and elsewhere in the world), one big problem area are the nursing homes. the balearic government is now trying all they can to protect them. https://www.periodicodeibiza.es/not...-situacion-residencias-ancianos-baleares.html

daily update 11th april

balearics:
total cases: 1507 (+19)
deaths: 102 (+5)
recovered: 757 (+20)
active: 648 (-6)

ibiza & formentera:
total cases: 131 (no new detected case in the last 24hrs!)
deaths: 9 (no new casualty in the last 24hrs)
recovered: 39 (+5)
active: 83 (-5)

the latest numbers for the balearics and especially for ibiza and formentera are giving hope. the growth has slowed down a lot and us being 'isolated' as islands has certainly helped a lot doing so, combined with the lockdown of course.

according to this article, the critical phase should have passed when we've had a full week with none or just one new case every day. https://www.periodicodeibiza.es/pit...s3zJpAmUds1XHytBlt8H2eJ4DzePo4UKSLhoLso297u-o

now that more tests are available, more and more people are being tested. civil protection and local police of san antonio have all been tested, all of them came back with a negative result. https://www.diariodeibiza.es/pitiuses-balears/2020/04/11/coronavirus-en-ibiza-todos-los/1136006.html

after almost two full weeks of complete economical shutdown in all of spain, non-essential businesses can open again (including construction work) next week, although bars, restaurants etc stay shut until 26th april at least and businesses which can do 'work from home' are advised to keep on doing so. there's fears that this partial reopening might provoke a big spike in covid-19 cases again. to avoid this, the government recommends using face masks and will be giving out those in spots where people congregate such as train stations etc. they also recommend using your own vehicle or walk to work (if you can) rather than using public transport in this period https://www.diariodeibiza.es/nacion...comienda-mascarillas-coronavirus/1135862.html

lastly, apparently a lot of hotels on the balearics won't open at all this summer as the demand simply isn't / won't be there. others still work on a july opening date possibility and all of that obviously depends on the evolution of the pandemic and the reopening of the national borders. https://www.periodicodeibiza.es/not...lera-baleares-abrira-puertas-este-verano.html

daily update 12th april

balearics:
total cases: 1534 (+27)
deaths: 112 (+10)
recovered: 848 (+91)
active: 574 (-74)

ibiza & formentera:
total cases: 142 (+11)
deaths: 9 (no new casualty in the last 24hrs)
recovered: 40 (+1)
active: 93 (+10)

whereas in the last 24hrs sadly ten people have lost their life on the balearics due to covid-19, luckily the number of recovered people has gone up a lot too.

on ibiza and formentera, after four days with hardly any new case, there's sadly been a new rise of detected cases again. apparently one of the nursing homes (the reina sofia one) is a hotspot :( https://www.noudiari.es/2020/04/det...ia-de-ibiza-con-nueve-contagios-por-covid-19/

daily update 13th april

balearics:
total cases: 1550 (+16)
deaths: 117 (+5)
recovered: 862 (+14)
active: 571 (-3)

ibiza & formentera:
total cases: 144 (+2)
deaths: 10 (+1)
recovered: 42 (+2)
active: 92 (-1)

on a national level, spain has had the best 24hrs in over three weeks with 'only' 3500 newly detected cases (which means a 2% growth). on the balearics the growth has been 1% only. careful though as it's been a weekend and those numbers are usually underreported / delayed a bit.

and even if the numbers definitely point towards the right direction, it is expected that detected cases will rise again because more testing is being done in the entire country. also, the fact that now non-essential industries can go back to work foments fears the growth of contagious might go up again.

to stimulate national tourism after the pandemic, the balearic group of travel agents proposed to the government that once domestic flights resume, all spanish citizens should get the tariff discount on flights which is usually limited to island residents. https://www.diariodeibiza.es/pitius...turistas-espanoles-tengan-rebaja/1136219.html

here's another article that points to the likelihood of national tourism to return this summer while international borders might stay shut still - all depending on the evolution of the pandemic within europe https://www.diariodeibiza.es/pitius...coronavirus-en-ibiza-este-verano/1136304.html and maybe the international market might return from august onwards https://www.diariodeibiza.es/pitius...coronavirus-en-ibiza-govern-cree/1136317.html

daily update 14th april

a month ago today, the president of the spanish government declared the state of alarm. the entire country has been on lockdown since then, with the last two weeks having even the industry running on an absolute minimum. the industry is now back at work with the easter bank holiday gone, but at a low pace only and with sanitary precautions. the general lockdown which keeps shops, restaurants, bars etc shut and the 'stay at home' order is still ongoing until 25th april midnight and will likely be extended in some form after that still (legally in spain this measure can only be taken for 15 days at a time).

during the last two weeks, the amount of new covid-19 cases has decreased steadily and while the number of total cases is still going up, the growth is much slower now.

on the balearics, thanks to being isolated as islands, the pandemic hasn't spread as badly as in some areas on the mainland and the growth has slowed down faster as well.

as of today, these are the numbers:

balearics:
total cases: 1571 (+21)
deaths: 118 (+1)
recovered: 871 (+9)
active: 582 (+11)

ibiza & formentera:
total cases: 146 (+2)
deaths: 10 (no casualty in the last 24hrs)
recovered: 44 (+2)
active: 92 (same as yesterday)

as the pandemic evolves, the outlook on the ibiza 2020 season changes. currently, the local tourism industry hopes to be able to start the season in july or august, maybe only with spanish tourists since it's a possible scenario of borders staying shut during summer and thus making international travel impossible. none of this is confirmed yet, but they are widely discussed scenarios . https://www.diariodeibiza.es/pitius...las-islas-tendran-turismo-partir/1136418.html a complete non-season is a possible scenario as well of course, but the vast majority of locals understandably keep hoping we will get some tourists this summer.

daily update 15th april

after the long easter bank holiday weekend, the numbers have gone up again a little, but that was to be expected (recount on weekends is always a little delayed). spain's numbers have grown by 3% whereas balearics have had a 2.2% rise.

as of today, these are the numbers:

balearics:
total cases: 1606 (+35)
deaths: 125 (+7)
recovered: 881 (+10)
active: 600 (+18)

ibiza & formentera:
total cases: 148 (+2)
deaths: 10 (no casualty in the last 24hrs)
recovered: 48 (+4)
active: 90 (-2)

according to this newspiece, the nightlife industry is working on a plan of how their establishments could be re-opened again with sanitary precautions as they did in china (apart from wuhan the clubs are open again it seems) https://www.noudiari.es/2020/04/la-...do-en-la-reapertura-de-las-discotecas-chinas/

edit: the clubs also put the idea in the room to extend opening hours https://www.noudiari.es/2020/04/las...-y-los-ertes-cuando-se-reactive-su-actividad/

daily update 16th april

balearics:
total cases: 1637 (+31)
deaths: 131 (+6)
recovered: 918 (+37)
active: 588 (-12)

ibiza & formentera:
total cases: 148 (no newly detected case in the last 24hrs)
deaths: 11 (+1)
recovered: 48 (+6)
active: 83 (-7)

in all the current negativity the world is experiencing, I'm gonna list lots of small, but good news today:

- growth in the entire of spain is stable, even though more and more tests are being done (more tests being done also means more cases are being detected)
- growth on balearics is stable too, under 2% growth only in cases
- on balearics as well as here in ibiza and formentera, in the last 24hrs there were more recovered cases than newly detected cases
- am still waiting for a link on this, but the best news is this: in spain they've started doing tests to random people and in some autonomías (our regions) up to 70% of tests have come back with a positive result. this means thousands of people have had the virus already, but have never had any symptoms.

and here are some local news:

https://www.diariodeibiza.es/pitius...oronavirus-ibiza-ibiza-gay-pride/1136961.html ibiza gay pride postponed to end of september, situation permitting.

https://www.noudiari.es/2020/04/abe...esta-ahora-la-prioridad-es-combatir-el-virus/ abel matutes: 'we plan on opening the hotels when we can, but we currently don't count on throwing any parties. first we need to beat the virus.'

daily update 17th april

balearics:
total cases: 1668 (+31)
deaths: 134 (+3)
recovered: 938 (+20)
active: 596 (+8)

ibiza & formentera:
total cases: 150 (+2)
deaths: 11 (no new casualty in last 24hrs)
recovered: 65 (+11!)
active: 74 (-9)

then here are today's news:
it is expected that this weekend, either tomorrow or on sunday, the president of the government will announce if and in what way the lockdown will be extended from 26th april onwards. the current lockdown finishes 25th april at midnight, but the government has already hinted that the lockdown will continue. after five weeks of very strict confinement lots of people (the poster very much included) hope for a tiny ease on measures as in families with kids should be able to leave their houses for a bit and, similar as in other countries, some personal exercise outdoors should be permitted...

daily update 18th april

before I start with numbers; the national health department has slightly changed how they count/request the numbers from all the autonomías and therefore, in the last 24hrs, they've included more cases in the recount which until now hadn't been considered since the outbreak of the pandemic. just so you know the actual growth in cases in the balearics in the last 24hrs isn't as staggering as it seems! also, on a national level, the daily growth of covid-19 cases has gone below 2% which is good.

balearics:
total cases: 1748 (+80, the actual growth in the last 24hrs is only 33 though)
deaths: 148 (+14, again, this number isn't just yesterday)
recovered: 958 (+20)
active: 642 (+46, also affected by the new recount)

ibiza & formentera:
total cases: 150 (no newly detected cases in last 24hrs)
deaths: 11 (no new casualty in last 24hrs)
recovered: 69 (+4)
active: 70 (-4)

more later as we'll likely get confirmation of the extension of nationwide lockdown until 10th may...

extension of nationwide lockdown until 9th may

confirmed. just announced by the president of the government. it still needs to be approved by the congress next week, but as things stand, we're in for three more weeks of confinement in spain.

what does change is that from 27th april onwards families with kids will be able to leave the house for a bit (limited and with precautions, details to follow). sadly no walks or outdoor exercise yet for us adults :(

daily update 19th april

balearics:
total cases: 1773 (+25)
deaths: 155 (+7)
recovered: 993 (+35)
active: 625 (-17)

ibiza & formentera:
total cases: 152 (+2)
deaths: 11 (no new casualty in last 24hrs)
recovered: 70 (+1)
active: 71 (+1)

on a nationwide level, the number of casualties has dropped to 410 in the last 24hrs. while that's still far too many, it's the lowest number in daily deaths in over three weeks. as usual though, weekend numbers are to be taken with caution and only on monday /tuesday we'll see if the evolution is really as good as it seems.

as mentioned yesterday evening, the state of alarm is to be extended until 9th may. congress still has to approve this next wednesday. once that's happened, we expect clubs that have parties planned in that period to then officially cancel those events.

daily update 20th april

balearics:
total cases: 1788 (+15)
deaths: 157 (+2)
recovered: 1005 (+12)
active: 626 (+1)

ibiza & formentera:
total cases: 152 (no newly detected case in the last 24hrs)
deaths: 11 (no new casualty in last 24hrs)
recovered: 71 (+1)
active: 70 (-1)

it's monday so we have to be careful with the data (weekend delay) and we'll know more when we see tomorrow's numbers, but still, here are some positive news:
  • lowest number of daily new cases on the balearics in a month
  • no new case on ibiza/formentera
  • on ibiza and formentera, the number of recovered patients is now bigger than the number of active patients
  • on a national level, it's the first time in a long time where we're below 400 daily deaths
there's a checkpoint outside the old can misses hospital where they do tests, in the past 9 days all 260 tests being done came back with a negative result https://www.diariodeibiza.es/pitius...bas-consecutivas-negativas-punto/1137723.html

step by step, little by little. it's good news on a very grey and rainy day here!

daily update 21st april

it's tuesday and usually the worst day for numbers (after the delayed weekend recount), but both national figures for spain as well as regional numbers for the balearics are continuing in the right direction.

balearics:
total cases: 1808 (+20)
deaths: 161 (+4)
recovered: 1005 (-)
active: 642 (+16)

ibiza & formentera:
total cases: 154 (+2)
deaths: 11 (no new casualty in last 24hrs)
recovered: 74 (+3)
active: 69 (-1)

for ibiza and formentera, in a period of an entire week we've only had 8 newly infected people.

then here are news:

  • all events planned for the month of may at hï and ushuaïa have now officially been cancelled. anyone that bought a ticket through ibiza spotlight gets an automated full refund. we are sure other venues will announce similarly in the next days.
  • pacha events for may have also disappeared from their own calendar, announcement must be imminent
  • if all the big clubs have to stay shut this summer, that alone would mean 3000 people without a job https://www.diariodeibiza.es/pitius...emporada-discotecas-llevara-paro/1137927.html this newspiece gives a pretty grim outlook, for balance I'd like to add that not the entire nightlife industry on the island is that pessimistic right now.
