recovered: 1321 (+14)
active: 401 (-4)

ibiza & formentera:
total cases: 163 (+1)

recovered: 116 (-)
active: 35 (+1)

news:
  • while still ongoing as we speak, spanish congress will approve a further extension of the state of alarm for the entire country, from 10th until 25th may. but this doesn't change the four phase deescalation plan explained a while ago with which the lockdown will be eased (rather it actually enables the government to do as planned)
  • after barcelona, now also madrid says they think they aren't ready to go into phase one just yet next monday. on the other hand, all of the balearic islands (apart from formentera which is in phase one already) are still very much expecting to go into phase one on 11th may and here on ibiza some restaurants are indeed preparing their premises for reopening. official approval of the change into phase one is still outstanding though.

daily update 7th may

numbers:

balearics:
total cases: 1929 (+8)
deaths: 201 (+2)
recovered: 1345 (+24)
active: 383 (-18)

ibiza & formentera:
total cases: 164 (+1)
deaths: 12 (-)
recovered: 117 (+1)
active: 35 (-)

on the balearics, we've sadly gone above 200 deaths now. on the other hand, we are finally below 400 active covid cases now - it's the lowest number in a long time. as you can see, there are still a few new cases every day and with the islands gradually opening up internally, it's unlikely new cases will completely disappear. but the number of cured people goes up rapidly and as long as the number of new cases doesn't go up massively with the gradual reopening (and thus the medical system doesn't get overwhelmed), the balearics are heading into the right direction. what's sure is the next few weeks when we will go through the four phase program will be crucial and we'll soon see whether the approach is working - we're hopeful.

news:
  • the german tourism commissioner says that if the pandemic stays under control and the numers continue in a favourable manner, a return to international travel could be possible this summer still (as in german tourists travelling to balearics for example) https://www.diariodeibiza.es/pitius...e-turismo-aleman-descarta-viajes/1141193.html again, this is just a scenario and not a confirmed thing.
  • either tomorrow or saturday we should officially get the go ahead from the central government to go into phase one on monday 11th may. once we know I shall explain what this phase entails.

daily update 8th may

numbers:

balearics:
total cases: 1935 (+6)
deaths: 202 (+1)
recovered: 1374 (+29)
active: 359 (-24)

ibiza & formentera:
total cases: 163 (-1, they went back one case, not sure if yesterday's count had a mistake)
deaths: 12 (-)
recovered: 120 (+3)
active: 31 (-4)

news:
  • we are awaiting the official OK from the government to move into phase one next monday 11th may. the common opinion (given the numbers and what the balearic government tells us) is that anything other than a 'yes' would be a big surprise. lots of shops and restaurants are preparing to open their doors. the announcement should come today still, I'll update the thread later again when we have the confirmation and I'll then also explain what changes for us

as mentioned earlier, here's the second update for today.

as expected, the central government has given the go ahead for the entire balearic archipelago to go into phase one of deescalation on monday 11th may (formentera is already in that phase since 4th may). most territories within spain are going into phase one on that date, but not all of them - both madrid and barcelona as well as a few other regions still stay in phase 0 still for at least one more week due to their situation

here's what changes for us on monday:
  • shops until 400m2 size can open (with security measures and only have 30% of capacity of clients inside)
  • social gatherings of up to 10 people (outdoors or anywhere in a house) are allowed again, respecting 2m safety distance
  • bars and restaurants with outdoor terraces can open them and run at 50% of their capacity (respecting safety distance)
  • people living together can drive in one car together again
  • open air markets can reopen
  • hotels and other touristic accomodations may open again, excluding communal zones
  • churches (generally places of cult) reopen, but with a third of capacity only
and here are restrictions that keep being valid in this phase:
  • the beaches stay shut for sunbathing, they are only open for walks and sportive activities (sup, surf is ok...but just a dip in the water isn't ok)
  • while we can now travel on the entire island, we still aren't allowed to travel to other islands in the balearic archipelago or the mainland (unless you have a good reason to do so)
  • there will still be schedules in place on who can go out when, awaiting confirmation, but they could be the same as the ones in place right now

first step back to normality!

daily update 9th may

numbers:

balearics:
total cases: 1944 (+9)
deaths: 207 (+5)
recovered: 1395 (+21)
active: 342 (-17)

ibiza & formentera:
total cases: 163 (-)
deaths: 12 (-)
recovered: 122 (+2)
active: 29 (-2)

today the ibiza 2020 season would have started with amnesia, ushuaïa and hï all having their opening parties...

...but instead, rather than being excited about the summer season to kick off, after nearly two full months of strict lockdown, we seem to be through the worst and the island is 'excited' (ahem) to partially open up for its residents. as explained in the past few days, on monday 11th may ibiza goes into phase one of the national deescalation programme and with that, lots of places will open back up. a lot of shops and of course also restaurants. not everyone will open up directly on monday, but well-known spots such as sa caleta, bambuddha, es mercat, yemanja and many more (these are just a few places off the top of my head) will open their outside terraces during the course of the next week. and while tourism is still a long way to go, at least businesses can open back up and social life slowly returns. I can't wait to go and have a few beers with my mates.

as explained when the phases programme was presented, every phase basically runs for two weeks. if the epidemiologic situation doesn't get worse in that period (and hopefully keeps getting better), the territory in question then moves to the next phase. the central government has just announced though that in very favourable cases, a phase might also be shortened to one week only (it won't be the norm). on the other hand let's also keep in mind that if the situation isn't improving (or gets worse), a phase could be extended or in a worst case scenario, an area even might have to go one step back. so the possibility of the return of tourism to the balearic islands this summer will heavily depend on how the next few weeks will look like in terms of numbers. and while nothing is confirmed and it's all rumours and scenarios currently, all going really well, in july we might see some form of season commencing.

the last two months were hard for the population because we were confined to our homes, but it was also pretty easy to follow the rules - everyone stays home and that was it. the difficult bit comes now, we get some freedom back, but we need to responsible in how we act. so those beers mentioned above will have to be enjoyed with safety distance between each others etc. fingers crossed we got this.

daily update 10th may

numbers:

balearics:
total cases: 1950 (+6)
deaths: 209 (+2)
recovered: 1401 (+6)
active: 340 (-2)

ibiza & formentera:
total cases: 163 (-)
deaths: 12 (-)
recovered: 124 (+2)
active: 27 (-2)

it's sunday so as usual we need to take the numbers with a pinch of salt. still though, four days in a row now without any new cases in ibiza and the lowest death rate since mid march in the entire of spain (143 casualties). also, the number of new cases is very low in a lot of different autonomías in spain (single digit numbers in half of all of the autonomías) and the overall ratio of newly infected to newly cured cases has been around 1:4 in the past few days.

news:
not much else today - it's a rainy sunday here, but tomorrow the sun should be back, right in time for those first outdoor beers on the newly reopened terraces!

daily update 11th may

numbers:

balearics:
total cases: 1953 (+3)
deaths: 209 (-)
recovered: 1415 (+14)
active: 329 (-11)

ibiza & formentera:
total cases: 163 (-)
deaths: 12 (-)
recovered: 126 (+2)
active: 25 (-2)

five consecutive days without any newly detected cases here on ibiza and formentera. national numbers also the best ever with under 400 new cases and just over 100 casualties (but yes, it's monday which usually gives lower numbers due to weekend notification delay). a promising start into the new week.

today is the day - on the balearic islands shops can open and outside terraces of bars and restaurants too. the first step back to normality is here and according to McDetective @McRackin lots of terraces in ibiza town are very busy (at their 50% max cap) as we speak.

daily update 12th may

numbers:

balearics:
total cases: 1953 (-)
deaths: 210 (+1)
recovered: 1423 (+8)
active: 320 (-9)

ibiza & formentera:
total cases: 165 (+2)
deaths: 12 (-)
recovered: 127 (+1)
active: 26 (+1)

tuesday is truth-day in terms of numbers, but the evolution keeps being really good on a national level. as for the numbers here, it seems a little weird... for the balearic archipelago they gave a day without any new positive cases, but the latest numbers for for ibiza and formentera just out do give two new cases so I'm not sure if that's a last minute addition that didn't make it to the archipelago recount in time.

I quickly checked the current numbers with the ones we had one month ago, on the 12th of april. for ibiza and formentera we were at 142 total cases, 93 of them were active at that point and by then 9 people had died. so in the past 30 days we've only had 23 new cases and we only have 26 active cases right now and three more have sadly lost their lives. it looks especially good in the latest few weeks. 23rd april was the last date of a local casualty and in the month of may we've so far only had six new cases including the two new ones today.

then there's quite a bit of news:
  • as of yesterday, people arriving on the island (be that by boat or by plane) are getting a temperature check at the port/airport (no rapid tests though). also, as from 15th may onwards, people arriving in spain coming from foreign countries need to go through a 14 day quarantine. this measure is currently only announced for the duration of the state of alarm (and its extensions). so this is basically for the few people that are allowed to travel because they have a valid reason to do so - we're not talking tourism since the borders are still closed anyway. for tourism, there is a multi-national taskforce (france, italy, germany, spain) now discussing on how travel to and between mediterranean countries could be made possible (and reasonably safe) without the need of quarantine once we're out of state of alarm.
  • formentera, which is a week ahead of ibiza (and pretty much the rest of spain) in its pandemic evolution and is now in its second week of phase one, will request to be moved into phase two of the de-escalation programme next monday 18th may which would enable to open the inside bits of restaurants and a few other easements of restrictions.
  • on ibiza, in localities with less than 5000 inhabitants, there aren't any time slots anymore for sports and walks, effective yesterday. this means we can be outside whenever we want (between 6am and 11pm that is) to be active or to go shopping and have meals or drinks outside. note, the beaches are still closed though for sunbathing and swimming. the only places on the island that still have the time slots (for elderly people, families and adults) are ibiza town, san antonio and cala de bou (even though san josé made a request to exempt cala de bou too) and the town of santa eularia.
  • ryanair is planning to get back flying 40% of their usual amount of flights from 1st july onwards. obviously this is pending governments decisions on borders, but it shows things are moving behind the scenes.

today it's exactly two months since the state of alarm was proclaimed here in spain due to the coronavirus pandemic. in these two months some areas in the country went through a very difficult time. on the balearic islands we've never had it that bad and as you can see, the growth in new cases is almost zero right now in our autonomía. on a national level, it's basically catalonia (barcelona center to be specific), madrid and castilla leon (the autonomía just next to madrid) where the pandemic situation sadly still isn't as favourable yet. some of those areas will likely stay in 'phase zero' for another week still, we'll know more about that before the weekend.

a first study shows that even in the hardest hit areas of the country, less than 20% of the population has been infected with coronavirus. here on the balearics it's less than 3% of all inhabitants. the country average is at 5% only which means reaching herd immunity would take a long time and would inevitably include lots of deaths. the same study revealed that up to a third of all cases have been asymptomatic which makes the virus so dangerous.

news:
  • first passenger ferry from barcelona has arrived back in ibiza today https://www.noudiari.es/2020/05/se-...barcelona-un-barco-con-pasajeros-y-vehiculos/
  • EU proposes three phase programme to bring tourism / travel back this summer still https://www.noudiari.es/2020/05/la-...tre-paises-para-salvar-el-turismo-en-3-fases/ this wouldn't include any quarantine, but wearing a mask on the plane looks like a compulsory thing
  • restaurante casa colonial on the road to santa eulalia reopens tomorrow 15th may
  • s'espardell, new restaurant literally just next to ushuaïa, opens this saturday 16th may
  • hostal la torre in cap negret reopens its restaurant for sunset sessions and dinner on 21st may
  • la escollera on es cavallet beach reopens on 22nd may
  • jockey club on salinas beach reopens 5th june
  • no dates out just yet, but some of the beach clubs in playa d'en bossa (nassau, coco beach etc) are also preparing to open soon according to their social media channels

more places opening:

  • restaurante bella napoli in ibiza town reopens tomorrow 15th may
  • paradise lost bar in ibiza town reopens tonight
let's keep in mind that all restaurants, bars and beach clubs can currently only open their outside bits - this obviously means that they will stay shut with bad weather! in phase two (all going well ibiza will go into that phase on 25th may) inside bits may be reopened too.

daily update 15th may

numbers:

balearics:
total cases: 1967 (+9)
deaths: 216 (-)
recovered: 1513 (+21)
active: 238 (-12)

ibiza & formentera:
total cases: 166 (+1)
deaths: 12 (-)
recovered: 129 (-)
active: 25 (+1)

news:
  • restaurant s'illa des bosc in cala conta opens today
  • restaurant sunset ashram in cala conta opens 1st june
  • lufthansa group (lufthansa, eurowings and swiss) will apparently pick up flights to balearics again from june https://www.periodicodeibiza.es/pit...lar-valencia-ibiza-mallorca-partir-junio.html
  • spain's transport minister says the government works on a plan to reopen the airports to international flights towards the end of june (when, in a best case scenario the third phase of the de-escalation programme ends). earliest date phase 3 could finish is monday 22nd june. https://www.periodicodeibiza.es/not...-podran-recibir-turistas-finales-junio-1.html (I know this sort of contradicts the previous newsbit re lufthansa group flights)
  • formentera is set to move into phase two of the de-escalation programme next monday 18th may. in this phase, inside bits of restaurants and bars may be reopened (at 50% capacity, same as the terraces which have already been opened in phase one), shopping centers may reopen, theatres and cinemas may reopen (both at 30% capacity) and sport events may be held, but with limited or no audience. if the situation keeps improving here on ibiza, we might go into phase two a week later, on 25th may.
  • so while a few areas of spain will very likely be in phase two by monday (a few of the smaller canary islands and formentera), others like barcelona and madrid will still stay in phase zero - or almost. it seems they will allow to reopen shops, but no restaurants/bars (terraces) yet and no reunions of friends. so madrid and barcelona will be in a 'phase 0.5' for a while it seems (confirmation of all the phase changes to follow tonight).

news:
  • pacha have unsurprisingly cancelled their june events due to the current outlook on things (tourism earliest to return at the end of june).
  • wearing face masks will be made compulsory in spain for the following environments: in public transport, public indoor spaces and also outdoors in case the 2 metre minimum distance can't be kept (as in: busy streets in big cities for example). details of this rule aren't out still (valid from when on etc) so once we'll have them we'll put them up here - should be in the next few days.
  • the spanish government is going to try to extend the state of alarm one last time. currently it expires this sunday 24th may and their plan is to extend it until the 27th june maximum (but in a far more relaxed way - details to follow). it needs to pass congress tomorrow and so far it's not sure whether it'll have enough votes to pass. in the case of ibiza, if the de-escalation plan continues in the same default two week manner, by 22nd june we'd be out of 'state of alarm' - the new proposal says that the state of alarm ends when phase four is reached.
  • las dalias café reopens monday 25th may, las dalias hippy market reopens saturday 30th may
there will be some more news coming later today still...things are starting to move.
