Afterlife at Hï Ibiza 2018

You make interesting points. I agree that as it stands it feels like a large % of crowd there are not Afterlife fans such. But still those that are there, even if only 30% or 40%, why aren't they creating the atmosphere like they would in Vista or elsewhere?
Is it simply the venue (ie lay out, visuals, sound) that doesn't favour it?

I remember last year for In The Dark, I was in middle of dance floor. Luciano played a cracking track. I started some whooping, hand clapping, waving hands.. my usual crap excited dancing and noticed everyone around me literally standing there like in a queue waiting for bus. I gave up soon after.

Had similar experience for Afterlife. Big track came on and it did not get the response I thought it would. It has to do with too many people in the club do not know or care about the music. Same thing happens in America. I still had a great time because I was with a group and really wasn’t paying to anyone outside us, but I noticed it.....never had that wow this place is going off feeling.

I went to see Orbital the other week, all us oldies (well 40+) were going mental clapping and cheering. When i looked a little closer round the room, there were young expressionless faces. So glad i don't give a toss when i`m dancing :)

This is a good point. I think it’s a mix of Space, and it being Ushuaia’s club etc.

I think if you look back pre season, many people were open to giving Afterlife @ Hï a chance (even some of the biggest critics). I think many of us falsely believed that in the same way Pacha and Amnesia can one night have a Techno night and then a Guetta type party the next night, and there probably be 0.01% crowd cross-over.... then the same would be the case for Hï. But I suppose in hindsight, that was mad. It took Pacha, Amnesia Etc years to establish this. Plus having an EDM night at Ushuaia on a Thursday would always mean that a % of people would just go to Hï after midnight.

So it’s probably a combination of Space, Ushuaia, and many other factors.

And I’m guessing all this talk of Solomun, Marco etc going to Hï will be put to bed. You don’t spend years building up credibility to then throw it away.

In many ways the club would be better off concentrating on having one type of music so it has an identity. I was gutted when I heard afterlife was going to Hii. I’m surprised it hasn’t proved a success with the line ups in all honesty. If those line ups were at amnesia or dc10 for example I’d be all over it.

Something I also noted this Sunday was how quiet Bora Bora and bossa was. Not many people out around the place and no vibe. Guess Not having Space Sundays has killed the vibe in bossa on a Sunday.

That was where it started (DC-10) at least with mini residency on the 4 Fridays or so when Tale of Us was still considered up and coming I suppose. They only used the Main room and while it was full it still wasn't unbearable in there. I caught Tennis, Mano, and Tale of Us and it was definitely one of the highlights of that trip over. Now Tale of Us can easily fill both rooms at DC-10, shame they couldn't do something there for say 12 Fridays or whichever day. I wonder if thats something DC-10 regrets now with the fame of Tale of Us simply doesn't care because they have Circo Mondays and Paradise Wednesdays.

I’ve only been once to this night this season, but from that experience (which was musically good but crowd poor), and from countless tales from workers and other visitors, I sadly believe this night is beyond saving from a credibility perspective. They need to say Byë to Hï ASAP.

i never been but its a bit confusing.

i can imagine how bad is it & at the same time i cant imagine how bad is it because of the line ups!!

sad thing. the best techno line up party in ibiza this season turn out to be like this.

I agree and I think most of us who post here would also agree from lineups alone it was probably the strongest of any party. Problem is what do Tale of Us consider a success? If it's simply packing the place out and getting in the numbers then they are doing that and it's doubtful they'd move from Hi. I'd guess they could probably pretty much have their choice of venues if they wanted to move again next year but if the paycheck is there and the room is full I get the feeling they'll be remaining right where they are.

The funny thing is, outside this forum all I ever hear is how amazing this party is. And it continues to fill up the place so I dunno if it’s going anywhere anytime soon.

I really do think people are over exaggerating how bad it is! Like yeah it could be better from a venue/crowd point of view but the majority of people don't go to enough events to really know what an amazing vibe is.

The music is always on point and if you've got good company with you I don't see why you wouldn't enjoy this night. I personally had a smashing time at the opening.

@Neo95gt Thing is for the most part i trust the opinions of the lot on the forum and with my limited ability to visit Ibiza, if it was a lineup like this past Thursday and i was in town, I'd still go and chance it and you're right I dont see it going anywhere either really.

@aregandj You may be right maybe it is overly exaggerated and all that really does matter is enjoying the company your with but in my case for example, I've gone to Ibiza solo a number of times and hate to attend nights where i cant enjoy the random company and chat up a few weirdos here and there lol and it sounds to me like the vibe there doesn't really fit that mold. Like i said, I'd prob wing it if i really liked the lineup but even my sister who visited Ibiza for the first time this year who really isn't a party authority said that the crowd was really blah and the main room was a lot of photo taking and standing around during a Tale of Us open to close set, so that was kind of alarming to me.

am not a huge fan of tale of us & ive never been to Hi so i dont know its structure compared to space, but these two rooms held ENTER main & the terrace which is the closest in comparison to afterlife music.

ive been there-- to enter-- over 15 times across its years & i dont remember ull be seeing much of mobiles or people chatting in the middle of the dance floor, especially when Nina was playing in the terrace or richie taking over the main room.

& tale of us had several appearances on the terrace, if am correct there were years in which they only played for ENTER.

the crowd can make a good party bad--- thats for sure, especially if youre a heavy techno listener & especially the music played at afterlife.. you need some techno- musical sense to at least enjoy the music & the hours spent there.

i totally understand that if i werent a techno listener & i went into a room where rodhad or dettmann or etap kayle is playing, for sure 100% i will not even recognize the music & i would want to spend my time doing something else.

on the other hand, a newbie to techno or the scene it self can go into Carola's music on & enjoy the atmosphere or at least spend a better time than if he / she going into afterlife.

most people who are criticizing the crowd at afterlife have different preferences towards techno music, we each like a different techno music type & nights but at the end we can all agree that afterlife needs a specific type of crowd.

This is an interesting comment. We absolutely do ‘group-think’ here sometimes. I’ve just genuinely not met anyone that has been to Afterlife for the last few seasons and likes this year. If they are building a new base at Hï then it may be job done for them, and maybe part of their plan all along. What’s just surprising for people that attend, is just how different the people / crowd are.

When Maceo was at Pacha, Gerber in 2013/14 and even Cocoon now, they attracted a smaller hard core sub-set of their crowd. I don’t think anyone would say those nights had Guetta fans dancing cluelessly ever.

What’s happened with Afterlife (please somebody tell me I’m crazy if this sounds nuts) is just a massive change in demographic from one season to the next. Has any party that’s moved venues ever had such a big change like this? I can’t think of any.

I’m sorry mate but in terms of numbers and income it will be considered a success. Whether or not that can be sustained next year is another matter. Will that crowd want to return? And whether TOU would want them to is another issue again. As @Chris L alludes to, they may have shafted themselves and created a longer term credibility problem by going to where the money was and attracting the wrong crowd for themselves.

Ibiza is full of short term thinking though. Hard to see them not wishing to return unless they can get a better offer elsewhere. That could very well happen after looking at the state of the market for pretty much anything techno orientated this near (honourable exception being the rammy Cox and circoloco events). They may well be locked into a longer than one year term contract though.

Totally agree with you re the state of PDB on that Sunday. Seems like it’s been that way all season unfortunately.

Afternoon all,

Has Afterlife ever sold out this summer? I’m over the 13th Sept, going to his Ushuaia for Beyer and co and may go to Afterlife later. Don’t necessarily want to get tickets now though, any advice?

no it hasn't.

it's always very busy in the theatre, but it's never been sold out.

I still have yet to go to Hi, it still hasn't really tempted me.

Did they install a slide copying Ku? Do people actually use that?

What is the old premier etage now? Can you still go up there?

Is el salon, sunset terrace and main terrace all knocked into one room now?
