What music are you into?

ok ok - it was a question, not a statement - and one i did not make up myself!

and i'm not juxtaposing Hysteria with the genre! just saying its a good album.

however it does just confuse me.

IMO getting into jazz without having someone close to you who can educate you a bit and give you the right first access is as difficult as trying to get into flamenco in your own.

Then, jazz is such a wide tag like electronic music.

I would recommend anyone to get a good old diva recording to start getting into it, Nina Simone and Sarah Vaughan are my favs. ;)

Some good shouts there Robder, a couple of iffy ones but then again scroll back to my list i'm hardly in a position to call anyone else's selection 'iffy'!

@ barbie - U2 :eek: Eric Prydz :eek::eek:

@ robder - alanis morisette :eek::eek::eek:

apart from that, generally sound tastes from both of you

for me

my modern heroes are people like carl craig, henrik schwarz, dixon, ame, metro area, kelly polar, (environ records) anything off DFA records, anything with ANDREW WEATHERALL on it, all the norwegians reinventing disco and UK labels like buzzin fly + balearic beardy sh1t like beyond the wizards sleeve + a few of the old US guard larry heard, kerri chandler + the odd bit of quentin harris, dennis ferrer, jerome sydenham when in pure house mood

Might have mentioned this before, but I went to the Russian premier of the documentary Joy Division on Monday night. Really interesting film... I knew the general story of the band (big New Order fan growing up) but the film filled in lots of details and had some pretty good interviews and footage.

I love new order or, at least, until Republic

'perfect kiss' for me is pretty close to genius - another tune I would kill to have heard in Ibiza last summer

Coincidentally, I loaded Republic onto my car computer today. Planned to listen to it on the way home tonight.

They are genius. Perfect Kiss was always my favorite too. Strangely, as I've grown older, Regret has taken on special meaning as well. Angel Dust, Round & Round, Bizarre LT, Confusion, Love Vigilantes, Sub-culture... just too many classics to name.

I support Babs and Robder on U2 and Alanis. U2's early albums are legendary. Take away her first adult album (and ignore her Canadian child star period) and Alanis has some good material as well. (edit: just saw that Robder liked that first album )

sorry, I just HATE B**O

I can't stand the snivelling, sanctimonious, pious, world saving, pope hugging, pavarotti dueting, smarmy, self-righteous, MOR-peddling turd

I agree with holy moly wear your "let's make B**O history" badge with pride

rant over.

music-wise, I liked with or without you, lemon and new year's day and the desire remix but since they went back to blue collar rawk n roll - I've avoided them like the plague

.... and as for Alanis

any po-faced singer-songwriter who misuses the word 'ironic' should be guillotined

am always deeply suspicious of singer-songwriter types who are angry, professional angst and all that - see a counsellor if it's so bad. Tsk.

they should borrow a leaf out of the mighty Morrissey's book and deploy some wit

Hate Bono or not, some of the tunes on Unforgettable Fire, Joshua Tree, October, War... amazing stuff.

As for Alanis, see above about more recent tunes. She's not so angry anymore and is thus tons better than on her first adult album (with Ironic, etc.)

I liked the angry Alanis better - got bored when she stopped her mardi songs.

Olly - you're very angry about your dislikes...!

nah, not really - pantomime villains, innit ;)

I do find ranting about music strangely therapeutic though [if undeniably futile]

Every site needs a pantomine villain.

As for Bono/The Edge - helmet cheese. However U2 have done some excellent tracks over the years. Think their best days are well behind them imo.

Me too, some of my faves there. On my first trip to Ibiza a friend i was with was pulled onto the stage to sing with Adeva in privilege, great moment (my mate was a bit of a Diva too). I'm a massive Erykah Badhu fan too and Carlene Anderson is a fave, but not heard anything from her for a while.

I don't dispute that you might like more than one style of sound (who doesn't?) but you said you liked ANYTHING - which I object to. It's humanly IMPOSSIBLE to relate to ALL music - otherwise how do you set standards in your tastes, how do you then determine genius from mediocrity?

well if it sounds good its good isn't it?

It doesn't take a genius to figure that out. ... And yes I know this will go down the whole "Who are you to define whats good?" route, so before it does let me say.

Different people have different audable tastes. Whats trash to you is treasure to me.

Whats mediocre, or BAD to you, might be a work of art or genius to me and vice versa.

I decide whats genius by using genres merely as a context to place the music into.

If a song meets the criteria of that genre well, then, it's mediocre. It's good for what it is, but thats it.

If a song breaks the confides of it it's genius. So long as it breaks them in a way that pleases my sense of organised sound. I like Techno and House and Trance because the rules of those formats are ones that please to my audio stimuli. That doesn't mean I'm limited to those genres and doesn't mean I like every song written in that genre simply because some monkey labels his work in that genre.

In my eyes, (or ears rather) music is purely for enjoyment. **** the politics and analytics of it. Just enjoy it.

I've glanced at the thread and seen how much you've written about music you DON'T like. That to me says you don't listen to enough music.

in English?

*anyway, catch all terms like techno and house are pretty meaningless nowadays

one man's techno is another man's Adam Beyer. Nuff said.

Now, I've completely lost track of what we were arguing about.

*awaits discoplayer chaos bomb*
