What music are you into?

at our office, I keep my headphones on as much as possible. Partly to hear my tunes, partly not to hear the tedious banter about last night's crap on ITV and partly because the radio the IT team have on is always tuned to the same crap on virgin ie tired FM pop-rock for volvo drivers. I will never compromise on music EVER. It's too sacred and I'm too militant to ever change.

Then you will never know more than what you allow yourself to know.

Don't you think? By listening to those stations you might find the one song that you make into a really good remix or something. I listen with a pen and paper at work. If I find a really good old song I don't have I write it down so I can get it because I know if I do a mobile gig or something it would be great to play.

And as a Dj, it DOES happen. We all have older people we know as friends. Now, my mate at work, Bruce is 56. Mahmud is 53. They're my dads age. If they said "Age I'm turning 60 can you play music at my party" I'd so "yeah no problems" but I wouldn't play my stuff, I'd play their stuff and thats what they're into because thats their era, like Techno/House/Trance is mine.

If you can't accept, adopt and appreciate other peoples musical interests, you won't thrive. You'll only end up doing what everyone else in your boat does. When it sinks you'll have no way back to shore.

You have to know whats going on with music and what went on. Your seriously limiting yourself.

P.S. I heard a dance remix of Britney Spears new song last night on Fox Fm when I was driving home after a meeting. It was ****ed. But the show in general ****s all over Nova's Over drive. The Dj is much more simple yet effective.

Also Stick Mareebo on Mix 101fm (Old TTfm), I listened to him for a few songs as well. Talk about variety man. I miss variety like that. All in, anything goes. THATS a party.

L/M/F/A/O/!!!!! :lol::lol::lol::lol:

yeah olly... you're seriously limiting yourself by not listening to commercial radio channels!

.

i answered my above question.......
music is obviously relative because i would rather stick vinegar in my eyeballs than listen to ANY remix of britney spears thus i dont listen to commercial radio @ all......
i dont find anything i need on those stations so i dont listen to those stations.....i dont think that means im missing out on something???
& i dont think olly thinks he's missing out when he listens to his headfones @ work......

btw: its kiss fm all the way for me....! 8)

Disco/ Olly.

Its not the music you don't like, it's the image that comes with it.

In regards to your stations. I sometimes listen to Nova, mainly fox and 101.1 Mix fm. Which is all, love songs and ****. Also, Gold 104 fm. We swap and change because different people like different things.

If I could pick it up from my work, I'd listen to Kiss Fm. Occasionally Syn and, just between you and me, yes, I like Joy Fm. ... But I can't listen at work because as soon as they hear the word 'Gay' you get ****en raped.

See, I listen to the radio as a Dj, not a listener. And not just a 'dance music' Dj either. Because theres ALOT more to music than EDM, and so I don't care if the station I listen to is labelled as commercial or what ever. I'm listening to learn, not to enjoy. If I want to enjoy music, as, horrible and egotistical as this will sound, I'll listen to a mix I've made because I know I can make a mix of allllllll the songs I like, played in a way I like to hear them and so forth.

But, I think any good Dj is brave enough to listen to music they don't like. I find specialist DJ's to be at best average because they're so into their own sound they lack ALOT of variety and energy. You can play as much energetic trance or what ever as you want, but if every song sounds the same it's going to get repetative and the energy will just wear off. Some with house music. You can only play so much before people get bored and so I think you HAVE to step outside your own likes and dislikes in order to truly do your job as a Dj.

It's not selling out. It's just reality. Every job has aspects of it that aren't enjoyable but if you truly want to master that craft you have to take the good with the bad. If you REALLY want people to dance, you can't hate them for not liking what you like and so you have to play what THEY like.

Remember, I listen as a DJ, not a music fan. So, if your in a different field and making people dance isn't your lifes ambition, then, listen to what ever it is you like. Thats exactly why variety exists, so people can CHOOSE what suits them. Theres nothing wrong with not liking Brtiney Spears and theres nothing wrong WITH liking her. It doesn't make anyone any better than anyone else. But I'd expect Dj's to open their minds a bit to the possibilities available and listen to the world as a Dj, just as I'd expect artists to see the world as an artist.

Well thats you. I don't PLAY Britney Speares. I like 1 song of hers. If I was doing a private gig and a week before the client had asked "can you play Britney, then I'd get it."

I knew Ollie was a DJ allready. I have someone with the same name in half my internet.

Liking or not liking Britney doesn't make you narrow, and Im not saying you personally are, but, not accepting that OTHERS might like or dislike a pop artist or format of music is what makes people narrow minded.

Where do you 2 Dj at?
