Weekend Plans

Sounds ace. The Dieppe ferry always used to be packed with pro cyclists exploring Normandy.
It was. I always take the Eurotunnel, it's 1.5 hours to Folkestone on a bike from home. France is very amenable to cyclists and motorcyclists in general. Cars get out of your way. Old boys in villages always come out to say hi when you stop for un café. "Monsieur, c'est une belle moto!" On Saturday I was pushing on a bit in the countryside and saw a motorcycle cop ahead with a speed gun. He pointed the gun at the floor and saluted me to carry on.

I used to notice the speed really pick up on the road to Rouen. Felt so liberating after all the speed traps in Sussex. Do miss that drive, but sadly had to sell my British car in 2016 or risk getting into trouble with GC on the 6 month rule.

After @Tourist reminded me about the Golden Lion in Todmorden a few weeks back I checked their schedule and went to watch Bushwaka last night.

Quality night, music was good with a mixed crowd - young uns, old uns and some real characters. Only about 12 people at the after party in town though. Nightmare getting a taxi in the middle of nowhere, taxis stop at midnight. Finally got a taxi to drive 30mins from Burnley to take us back 🙃

Long weekend & Khruangbin in Glasgow on Friday night.
I've never seen them, but I find the concept and references intriguing. I quite like luk thung and morlam (morlam clubs especially are lots of fun as Isaan people are great as is their food), but I've never met anyone who hasn't lived in Thailand who is even aware of Thai popular music. God knows how Khruangbin hit upon the idea.

I bought a ticket without being a huge fan and thinking it might be a bit of a risk. When I watched their 6 Music set beforehand, I had no doubts I was going to enjoy it. If anything the 6 Music set is perhaps a bit too crowd-pleasing (given what they are known for on record), but they did all that, plus 30 minutes or so of more instrumental stuff to balance it out. They are brilliant musicians.

Ooh full review please!

Haha, just about recovered to review. I was mainly there for work as I had a lot of meetings with artists and to see them play around Berlin.

Loved Kater Blau, which I hadn't been to before, and would definitely go back. It would be perfect in summer. KEENE were amazing and would really like to see them play in Ibiza as they'd be perfect. Lovely guys too. This was definitely my highlight of an excellent set -

Went to Urban Spree to see the wonderful Jennifer Touch do a live set at Curses's album launch. Wanted to stay for Curses & Local Suicide but needed to sleep & freshen up before an epic Sunday. Jennifer was brilliant live - so much emotion and atmosphere in a packed, smoky venue. Especially enjoyed hearing Chemistry & Attic live -
.

So, after 5-6 hours, woke up at 7am feeling pretty good, showered, had some coffee and a light breakfast (crisps and the leftover falafel wrap from the previous night!), then headed to Watergate for just before 8am. The look the bouncer on the door gave us was priceless, as though "WTF are you doing coming here at this time?! Have you been knocked back from Berghain?!" Once he realised we were on the guestlist and to see artists I work with (& completely sober!) he was fine and it was a really lovely vibe. Although amusing we were probably the only sober people and everyone else had clearly been partying for several hours! Matthias Meyer & Budakid were doing a B2B which was outstanding - love both of them and really exciting to see Matthias's residency at Akasha this summer. Hopefully Budakid joins him as their B2B was brilliant. It was really synthy (my cup of tea!) but still perfect post sunrise, early morning vibes just by the Spree. Obviously not photos or videos but I managed to do some sneaky Shazams as their set was just brilliant from start to finish. These were my two highlights (of many)
&

Then on to the big house! Got to Berghain around 11.45am for Theo Kottis's 12pm-4pm set at Panorama Bar. The line-up was so good that week that I would happily have spent the whole time there (Sally C was on before, Leon Vyncehall afterwards). Theo was incredible and probably the best atmosphere I've enjoyed at Panorama Bar (Hector Oaks downstairs in Berghain was not my cup of tea at all and was pretty painful, or maybe I was just too sober / ket free?!). Everyone was smiling, happy, friendly...reminded me of early Ibiza parties. I don't think I've danced so much during a set and barely sat down. A good thing as the queues for the bars / toilets (!!!) were pretty annoying. Theo really enjoyed it too and had a big smile on his face for the last two hours. Really hope to see him in Ibiza this summer. Every track was excellent and the set flowed really well - no boring or dull moments. Lots of people we spoke to who were regulars said it was one of their favourite sets there. This was probably my highlight:
Speaking of Matisa, we then left Berghain (my husband wanted to stay!) for Matisa at ELSE. I like ELSE but it is more of a summer / warm weather (dry!) venue and it was pretty cold. It was actually snowing in the queue for Berghain at lunchtime! So everyone was outdoors in big jackets. As Dixon was on just after Matisa, it was pretty busy. I love Matisa and can't wait to see her at DC10 this summer but the vibe seemed a bit flat, given the weather and it felt a though everyone was there for Dixon. We were also feeling knackered by this time and a certain football game (Man City v Liverpool) had started, so we left to go back to the hotel, watch that, freshen up...then return to Berghain for 9pm.

Whilst we were guestlist, we were very lucky with the lack of queues as apparently even the guest list was 3 hours this weekend! It was still very busy as Ben Klock was playing Berghain although we headed to Panorama Bar for Virginia, then Cinthie. Not sure if it was tiredness but much preferred the music & vibe for Theo Kottis but it was still great. Stayed until 2am and as is usually the case, the crowd reduced by midnight.

A brilliant trip and excited to return again!

cracking review Clara. Not heard of many of these names. Will investigate further. the Virginia doubleheader with Steffi on beatsinspace a few years back was a classy mix and perm fixture on my ipod! snooze for love brings back memories too, from that imperial period when Terje could do no wrong

I was really pleased to see Virginia as I have always been a fan of her mixes & productions (both solo & with Steffi). She didn’t disappoint although looked a tad serious throughout.

Landed at Gatwick from Cancun at 7.40am this morning. After a really great family holiday, we're staight back in full surburban joy mode - Arsenal session for eldest tomorrow evening, followed by sleepover in the cloud for both my boys. He's back at guitar lessons tomorrow morning and then I have a footy match. Sunday - take kids to my folks and then in the afternoon, cinema for Sonic The Hedgehog 2.

Weather was great, 29, 30 degrees everyday, sunny with a bit of cloud for relief every now and again. Rained heavily on 2nd day of 2 weeks, not a drop of rain after. Little bit windy.
