The footy !!

all this talk of it not being a penalty, there seems no mention that from where we were sat in east stand valencia looked offside for united goal and the linesman who missed it seemed to have frostbite and was unable to lift his flag in the first half....now if we want to start an unbiased lets stop having a go at city thread can we slag off the officials who seem in all the home games i've been to this season are 'un-fit for purpose'??

I'm giving my opinion from an unbiased position. I couldn't care who wins between the two teams.

I was talking about Tevez's effort against his former club and merely pointed out that the first of his goals had a helping hand from the ref.

And to be honest I can't tell if valencia looked offside from where you were sat in the east stand as i was sitting on my couch in glasgow at the time.

Graham Poll had a good write-up on the Mail website last night.

If the defender fouled the attacker twice - once outside the area and again inside - then it's a penalty. The ref's de facto played 'advantage' on the first foul and penalized the second.

That's what the ref last night was doing. Only problem is Rafael's 2nd tug at Tevez actually began outside the area.

But as well all know, reffing mistakes happen. Seems like there are more and more these days... either refs are getting poorer, or the million camera angles on TV mean decisions are increasingly scrutinized. Perhaps a bit of both...

firstly it was Bellamy not Tevez Johnny ;)

Thats interesting because the ref was very clear in explaning the penalty to the usual barrage of undisciplined red shirted protestors. "two fouls" he said!!

anyway, how many times have the rags been on the right end of some very dubious penalty shouts?

Ah yes. Bellamy.

It probably looked to the ref as if the second tug was inside the box (thus his holding up 2 fingers in response to the Reds badgering him), but it actually started outside. But the ref doesn't have replay. I thought he was right until I saw the 2nd or 3rd replay.

And before you start equating Chelsea with Cit, don't forget that we've still got JT and Super Frank who wouldn't leave the club any sooner than Carragher or Stevie G.

not strictly true - "Super Frank" was desperate to join Barca but he wasn't perceived to be good enough

that's the point innit, you can kind of forgive the ones in real time that look genuine. that's fair enough, same as a player missing an open goal. you can say bad luck, fair enough.

thing is, if the striker faced with the open goal decided to do a sumersault, backheel to score the open goal, and missed, then you'd have cause to say well that was sh!t. no bad luck involved.

the point is on some decisions, you just know it, everyone can see it, both sides, both sets of players, everyone. yet the ref see something else. it's because they don't know the game, you can tell when a player goes down but haven't really been touched or there has been contact but so what, that happens 5 times a game. they're not fouls, contact doesn't equal a foul.

the worst ones are when a pen or free kick is given and nobody on either side, nor the fans, have a scooby what its for or who its given against.

where's colina (and paul durkin!)??

try supporting a scottish team when we're playing anyone in europe. Refs favour teams from bigger leagues. Just look at the decisions given to Arsenal in champions league qualifiers this year against celtic.

it's true, also an element of human nature i think. the refs wanna be in the good books of the big teams (remember the penalty famine for away teams at old trafford).

it'll be the same for old firm teams against smaller clubs.

BUT, the game shouldn't suffer as a result of this, the refs need to skill themselves at remaining impartial and should be rewarded more, and punished more, when they get it right or wrong.

the way Anders Frisk was hounded out of the game by the Chelsea bully boys was nothing short of a disgrace. Worthy of a criminal investigation but no doubt FIFA UEFA WHOEFA were bought off by Abramovich and his seedy associates.

agreed Johnny & grego! in normal time, I was out of my seat "penalty...penalty"
I thought it was stonewall, however after seeing the replays, I think it was a tad harsh, and while we are on the subject, it probably wasn't a corner either  but thems the breaks I suppose. Im sure we will have more than our fair share of dodgy decisions against us next weds. I love the irony of the rags fans bleating about being hard done by by the ref, when the ritual kicking and fouling of swp by evra and carrick went largely un-noticed for most of the evening.

You know what, most of the grief we get re signing players and their motivation for joining us comes from scousers and its beginning to get a bit tiresome! whats your problem? is it because your team is imploding and you cant stand to see your once poorer near neighbours slowly eclipsing you and becoming one of the countrys top 4 clubs!! I do empathise with you, I have had to put up with mediocrity for most of my life and its not nice, but sticking one over the rags once or twice every few seasons does make it more pallatable!!

oh and if you want to reignite the debate about players who lack class

3 words.... Gary Fcuking Neville!!!!

Finally we agree on something.
