Tell us how it was - Ibiza 2019

Ah fair one mate, was more interested if you got back on it after a short break.

I was going to get on it this weekend but my missus talked me out of it. Says I need a longer break and she’s probably right ?
Yeah take at least 4 weeks to let everything replenish. And after a multiple day bender...you might even need a longer period.

Reading your post and those from others does make me realize it's a gift that we do share this hobby and actually only do it together.
But also respect for the partners who are tripsitting and still having fun with their rolling husband/wife.

Dates you were there: 28th Sep - 5th October

Where you stayed: Had a villa somewhere between San Rafel and San Antonio....felt really remote but was near enough to lots of places and we had cars so no dramas. Would stay there again, lovely pool area only downside no aircon in bedrooms but not needed this time of year.

Club nights visited: Cocoon Closing at Amnesia

Best night: Cocoon - Really needed that night - everything was perfect crowd up for it, Sven on top form. Amnesia was rocking!

Worst night: None

Best bar: Didn't really hit up bars just drank at villa and beach restaurants for lunch etc...

Best place to eat: Ate at Roca y mar - Benirras, Jockey Club - Salinas, Atzaro Beach - Cala Nova. Atzaro was best for me we went big as it was last day and food and service all great and kids were good as well so made it all the more relaxing! Cala Nova amazing by the way, first time there and will be going back time and time again. Gorgeous beach. Jockey club was ok but not amazing and more expensive but I was very hungover so probably made a difference! Roca y mar was a gamble as we didn't fancy Elements - my food was ok but some in the group were dubious. Shame as it was more welcoming and relaxing and more Spanish.

Money spent: Not totted up but wasn't a nightmare by any stretch as it wasn't a full on trip.

Biggest regret: Not doing Cocoon Afters...had such a good time at Amnesia and was spared from doing anything other than lay by the pool the day after to recover....didn't want to push things too far with the Mrs and had my 2 year old running about too.

Going back? Of course! Few weddings and stuff on the agenda next year so not a week again but a weekend at the very least!

Top tip: Get a car and always try and drive to new places. I had never done Cala Nova and it was my favourite day - longer drive from our place than some other beaches but longest you'll be in the car is 40 mins for most journeys. Still so many places I want to see!

First day back at work today after what was another unforgettable, and unexpected longer than planned trip.

I shall not go into too much detail as I think most of it has been said already regarding Cocoon Closing but just WOW! Over September I was on the island 3 times. 8-10, for Sven ANL at Underground, 13-18 for a nice 5 night break and included Sven ANL at Amnesia and then what was supposed to be 30-2nd, but turned into 30-5th.

Already done a review of the 8-10th and 13-18 trips somewhere on the forum so will focus on 30th September -5th October.

This trip was suppose to be just for Cocoon Closing and what a night/day this was! Arrived at Amnesia for open and plotted up on the terrace all night. Stayed till the bitter end and loved every minute. Got back to the hotel about 8-8:30 and carried on there for a little until some of the group @LP_IBIZA included, decided to get some rest. This was my plan, but like all plans in Ibiza they rarely happen!

So me and one mate stayed up in the apartment carrying on all the way until it was time to finally start getting ready for the afters. Met back up with the group, went for some food, then made out way to Benimussa for what was to be an unforgettable day and evening. I was feeling rather knackered when we arrived but the tempo and volume was perfect and bit by bit over the next few hours Sven built me back up. Stayed until about an hour before the end and was gutted to have missed the finish but still what an incredible day and night!

Nice to see you again @stivi as well!

Anyway so after the madness of Cocoon and chilled day on the Wednesday followed and our flight home was scheduled for 21:40pm that night irrc. This is when my trip went just a tad off plan.

Just about to bored the plane and bang can't find my passport!!!!!!

Either lost of stolen I had no other choice but the leave my group to travel home without me. Initially panic mode set in, my heart dropped and I had no idea what to do. I left to airport, jumped straight in a taxi back to a mates house, and took half hour to assess the situation.

All I will say is thank god for travel insurance! It's about 11pm on Wednesday night at this point, I've had very little sleep and very little food. It's at this point I decide to call my insurance. Turns out I'm covered for flights and hotel for quite a nice amount. I had a look online and found a lovely room at the 5* all inclusive hotel, Grand Palladium White Island. So I got a taxi there and after some drama around not having a passport to check in I was escorted to my room.

Well what an amazing hotel this was! 24/7 sports bar serving hot food and alcohol was much needed and called it a night about 3am. My birthday was approaching on the Saturday (5th October) and all I could think was what a lovely birthday present from my insurance! Did have to take a trip to the police station on Thursday to report my passport but managed to have an emergency passport sorted on Friday so booked a flight home for Saturday late afternoon.

After a couple chilled days around the pool just drinking and eating I thought it would be rude not to attend Dixon's closing to see in my 25th birthday and even though I was solo it was a very good night indeed. Arrived again for open and only managed to last until shortly after 4am I believe, a little gutted but all things considered what an amazing trip it turned out to be!

Got home Saturday night, had a Chinese and have pretty much slept through till work this morning.

Moral or the story is always take out travel insurance!

Will I be back … damn blood right!!! My love for this magical island gets more and more every time I visit and have goosebumps just writing this.

Openings are very much on the cards and will be booking something as soon as possible.

Roll on 2020.
Thanks for the good review.

Just out of interest, how does the whole logistics work for getting a new passport whilst you're out there? I always have a photocopy or image of mine with me.

You have to fill in a form online. It's very easy and straightforward. Luckily I also had a picture of mine so just put the passport number in, filled in the other information, and they then emailed around 24 hours later saying I could collect from the British Consulate which is in Ibiza Town between certain hours. It was literally a really thin yellow passport that said "Emergency Passport" on the front and inside it said it permits one trip from Ibiza to the UK before a set date which was about a week after. They then take the passport at boarder control in the UK.

Have to say I was amazed by how good the service was.

EDIT: Then obviously I have had to just apply for a new passport now I am back home, but again that was extremely easy! All online now and had a passport on the way within about 20 minutes.

Good info, cheers for that ? Glad you got sorted and it wasn’t too painful.

What I take away from that is to have a scan of my passport handy in future.

100%!! The hotel asked for my passport when I went to check in and I was like sorry I haven't got one and explained. They was being rather funny and if I didn't have that picture and my driving license on me I'm not too sure if I would have actually been able to stay.

So After Elrow und After Party you went by car to Benimussa, and you didn't get checked?
If you're asking me if I drove under influence...no :)
If you're asking me if I was checked at Benimussa.... yes. But no alcohol or other test, they wanted to search my car and my clothes. As they did with many other cars arriving at Benimussa Park. Heard they did the same again at the closing last Sunday.

Hiiii - seems rude not to leave a review / rarely post here now.

Short stay - 3-8 October, Ibiza town.

Yearly veteran since the mid 90s - last trip was in 2007 (unless you count a Benirrás retreat off-season last year).

I was really keen to see how much things have changed - and it's got crazy with the €€€€€.

Not here to moan - I'll be back next year (needed over a decade away as it was getting ridiculous ). Glad to say it's still my fave place on the planet - mainly because you can't recreate the magic formula anywhere else.

If you're lucky enough to find a decent party, the crowd is so wonderfully trashy. Elements at Benirrás had it in spades last year - the closing party at the end of Oct was full of islanders, workers, wizened stragglers who have danced through the entire season, wide eyed ravers, tripped-out crusties, gay muscle clones/bears, old-timers with long, grey dreadlocks, jet-set gazillionaires fresh from superyachts, men from Del Monte and trashy, glamazon supermodels etc etc...

So it's nice to see it's all still there - I guess you have to look a little deeper to find it. Kinda miss the freebies like Bora Bora (is that still a thing?) and most of all, the daytime dancing thing (rocking up at a club all fresh at 7am and knowing the island was truly 24 hour).

Wellbeing seems to have taken off in a big way also - this is a great thing but I'm sensing lots of new-agers and insta-yogis are all over it (argh).

Positives:

Glitterbox - Crowd was a bit dodgy (bit Manumission with the Brit turnout) but I love the razzmatazz of the large venue and androgynous club freaks etc. Always good to see straight blokes eyeing up drag queens unawares . It's a little bit sad to see the spot where the original space terrace was - but verdict on Hï is that it's a fabulous venue. It's vast/jaw dropping - and versatile when you compare the theatre bit to the club area which is designed in such a way that dancers don't face the DJ booth. I didn't expect to love it, having read lots of negative viewpoints on the theatre.
So Glitterbox - bit cheesy in places (bit like the MoS nights) but truly world class.

Sa Trinxa/Salinas - Jon Sa Trinxa still plays on Mondays and Wednesdays - pretty much the number one thing that keeps me coming back these days. Such a talent.

Negatives:

What have they done to Pacha? It used to be such a beautiful building with low hanging chandeliers and vintage, finca mosaic tiling. The dance floor was in the centre and it had a unique Spanish feel which was out there on its own. They now appear to have ripped the soul out of it because the restructure just looks like a 'face-the-stage' superclub (could be anywhere frankly). The original VIP section was really ace because it wasn't too imposing and always had that fancy appeal that a superstar or royalty might be lurking. Now half the frigging club is VIP...this new style of class segregation is vile/off-putting and contributes nothing to the atmosphere.

Dixon/Transmoderna - I guess the kids love it, but this music is very serious/blokie and didn't really go anywhere much. I recognise that of its genre it's well produced - but weren't we dancing to that same 'progressive' beat 20 years ago? Surely it's time for DJs to start diversifying and taking people on a journey rather than sticking to one signature sound?

DC10 - I didn't go on principle. Call me a mizzogs but I find it hard to fathom that people are willing to cough up €70/80 Euros to go to a club that's supposedly underground? It used to be free with very few Brits and now it appears to be a total money pit. I'm all for getting paid - but narrowing your demographic to trustafarian kids and Champagne Charlies does nowt for atmos. Neither does packing a club to the gills so you can't move (which is standard for closing parties I hear?). See also Ushuaia - never been!

...

It's little wonder all the veterans have fled to Croatia (I don't know anyone who goes to Ibiza any more ?). If they carry on with the aggressive Vegas promotion, they'll reach a tipping point - but in my case, it's the history and connection I have with the place that keeps me coming back.

See you in 2020.

Dates you were there:
Friday 13th September - Wednesday 18th September

Second of three trips to Ibiza this year and really need to get this written before we head back on Saturday for Solomun +1 closing

Where you stayed:
Ibiza Town Apartment overlooking Plaza del Parque and Vara de Rey

Second time staying in this apartment and was perfect place to base ourselves given the poor weather. We also managed to have 6 friends over and it was pretty decent for entertaining / pre-drinks.

Club nights visited:

Friday: Shadows Closing @ Cova Santa / Amnesia

I wrote about this at the time and it really was a hell of a night starting outside at Cova Santa with Magdalena followed by immense downpour before squeezing in to the club in Cova Santa soaked. And then busses to Amnesia to see Solomun warm up Amnesia nicely and it fill up from nothing. Musically I wasn't totally sold as b2b seemed to be all over the place and we left at 3am, but having made new friends and using up a stash of leftovers from the previous trip, I was largely satisfied with this night. I’ve said it before but I can see lots of potential for Shadows to move (at least occasionally/takeovers) to Amnesia next year.

Saturday: Pikes House Party with Artwork
After a nice lazy lunch lunch at Los Parasoles on Pdb beach (service was unbelievably slow) and meeting with our new friend and some more of her crew we headed to Pikes at about 10.45 just in time for happy hour, which possibly explained a really cheap round of drinks I bought last year.

We managed to grab one of the large beds outside and camped out here for most of the night. I only ventured inside for about ten minutes but wasn't really feeling the very busy dancefloor and music that just isn't my bag, but most of our group seemed to enjoy it. Most of the night was spent chatting outside to new friends and a few randoms including Nobbie Q and also spied White Isle Calling (not difficult, he's a big geezer) and introduced him to some of the Spotlighters in our group. Was perfectly enjoyable chilled night and in bed by 4.30am.

Sunday Part 1: Zoo Project

This wasn't originally part of the plan but our new friends were going and we managed to bag €15 Guestlist tickets and we headed in around 7.30pm after managing to source the much coveted Soundclouds.

Actually this party is really underated and with the lack of headliners makes it easier to just enjoy the atmosphere. It got busy enough pretty quick and we spent a couple of hours in the main (slopey) area before moving to the Seal Pit for 90 mins and time went pretty quick and much fun was had with a group of young English lads. Looking back this really was some of the best vibes of the trip. Dancing, interacting, taking photos for people ... no jerks or pervs ... all good clean fun and quite a few older people (like me) too. We had to leave at 11ish to get the others back in time for early entry Glitterbox and we were heading to Solomun.

Sunday Part 2 : Solomun +1 (Gerd Jansen) @ Pacha

Quick shower at the apartment and we walked to Pacha arriving at about 1pm. Met up with some more friends who we met last year and had a drink and catch up on the roof terrace and then headed in for about an hour of Gerd, who I thought played really nicely including Theo Cottis - Turning Around and set things up well for Solomun. Unfortunately, it seemed that Solomun had other ideas for the direction of the music and rather than taking it up a few notches with (what I consider) to be his signature sound of melodic stuff with a harder edge, driving baselines etc. he took it quite left field quite quickly and it just sounded off to me. Quite minimal and really nothing to get your teeth into. Luckily we were still enjoying ourselves and despite one or two odd encounters for my wife with creepy older guys everything was okay. We made more visits to the roof terrace to catch up with some other friends from previous trips who had gone VIP but enthralled us with a multitude of random stories, including that the girls had practically got into a fight with some Russian models as they got lost in VIP and started climbing over different tables! Turns out the VIP stamp only works under UV so they couldn't easily prove they were legit.

Night continued indoors upstairs with far more space than in July for DJ Tennis and included the space upstairs directly opposite the DJ, normally reserved for VIP. Solomun slightly recovered by dropping what I later discovered to be David Kochs - Ghost Trance ... very nice indeed. Night then gets a little hazy and between a few more trips to the roof terrace and chats with a few randoms including a Thomas Cook pilot (!) we returned for the B2B which I thought was better than Solomun alone but I was running out of gas and for once it was me who dragged Mrs Zap out at 6.45am. Heard it finished at 7.15.

At this point we decided to look up our new friends who had been to Glitterbox and proceeded to get a taxi to Bossa to meet them at a bar Lo Zio Pizza next door to Cocos ... Proceeded to spend a nice couple of hours chatting to a lovely group of older lads from Leicester / Nottingham who had been at Glitterbox and had met a few of our friends on the way out. Must be said the owner of the bar was really nice and friendly and all this at 7-9am but then things got a bit weird with a girl stealing our lighter and some other fella freaking a few of our group out but possibly a mis-understanding. One final thing to mention was some guy who seemed to be linked to the bar came along and showed us his brand new "Swag" tattoo to much amusement. Got home about 9.30am and got 4-5 hours sleep I think.

(To be continued)

Monday: DJ Awards @ Heart

The original plan had been to join our new friends at Ibiza rocks for Norman Jay style event ... Not really sure of the details but by this time we were having so much fun with them that I'd agree to anything the wife wanted to do. However, once we made contact in early afternoon they had decided to blow it out as the toll of their own (mega) shenanigans had kicked in.

We ended up heading back to PdB and had a boozy late lunch with all 8 of us at the Bull Bar Tavern on the beach. Not the greatest food but the staff are friendly and we enjoyed ourselves for maybe 2-3 hours before heading back to Ibiza Town with a plan to have a quiet one together with some rumblings of Cocoon for two or three of us. We grabbed a bottle of gin, some tonic and some snacks (Serrano Ruffles - the king of crisps) and I had a quick tidy up and a doze awaiting the arrival of our friends. At this point maybe it hit me how much fun it is to have met like minded friends that you really wanted to hang out with. Normally I'm probably quite picky and prefer to spend time just the two of us but this trip was different. Plus I quite like entertaining a bit and the apartment was perfect and probably not something everyone gets to see somewhere like this on holidays to Ibiza. My wife decided at this point to tease me that they probably wouldn't turn up and I probably believed it for a bit. Eventually, they arrived and despite everyone being a bit tired we all got stuck into the Gin and some Jagermeister provided by Jonnhy Vodka and some other things that help wake you up! If I recall correctly, one of the gang (a very cool American guy with a penchant for gadgets) decided he wanted to clean one of his devices at this point and proclaimed loudly "where do you keep your jack-off lotion" ... Now I am old-school and didn't have any to hand but it did tickle us and he had about a hundred of these lines during the trip which I must try a record before I forget them. Anyway at some point we got the flavour to go out again and I managed to bag the whole group g-list for Heart DJ Awards. So we packed up and headed out around midnight via Bar 5 in the port for a round of cocktails and then headed to Heart just before 1.30am. Despite a scare with 2 of the group not getting in due to ID issues they eventually appeared and with the help of more Soundclouds, settled into Agoria playing some lovely stuff. The club was nicely full and ratio of women to men was very good if a little off putting that every single one looked like a model! But actually the vibe was good and people were friendly (until the issue with the bloke trying to put his tongue in the wifes mouth and worse mentioned elsewhere) and the club was decent. Hernan Cattaneo took over and is pretty easy to get into and then Butch really played some lovely stuff including his radio friendly track Desire. Later on some further craziness occurred when one of the group managed to gain access to the stage VIP area and was dancing with a bloke who looked like a cross between Thor and the Dothraki king from GOT, who then decided to pick her up and swing her round his head almost catching Butch in the process! It all ended at 6 a.m. we walked back to the apartment after a quick stop for photos riding the dogs on the roundabout near Heart / Pacha. All back to ours but by this time I had had it and quickly fell asleep.

Tuesday: Last night quiet dinner in Ibiza Town
Very lazy final day making use of the apartment and the afterglow with Mrs Zap was very enjoyable and eventually we packed up and met two of the gang for a drink in Plaza del Parque and then dinner at one of the local bars behind McDonald's area of the Port. Said our goodbyes as a few of them headed to Resistance closing and had that real feeling of sadness when you know something magical has to end.

Best night:
Has to be Heart due to the build up to the night and everyone being together and having zero expectations plus the music being just right for an end of trip night. I will definitely look to return but also be on the look out for creeps and a better strategy of dealing with them.

Worst night:
No worse nights really but I'm hoping our return to Pikes this coming Saturday will offer a bit more musically with Bushwacka.

Best bar:
Has to be the place in Bossa that we spent a couple of random hours at on Monday morning.

Best place to eat:
Wasn't our best culinary trip ... We had a couple of nice salads in Los Parasoles and this years Jamon Ruffles vintage is up there with the best I've had!

Money Spent:
I really don't know ... I've given up trying to work it out.

Biggest regret:
The weather and the unplanned itinerary meant we didn't make it to the beach once, but making new friends more than made up for this.

Going back?
This Saturday for Solomun closing and in advanced discussions for early October trip next year!

Top tip:
This forum is a gold mine of information and great people and contacts, which is sometimes overshadowed by the talk of DJs, clubs, petty arguments etc. But I really felt a sense of being free on this trip to just go with the flow and maybe after 5 years and a over dozen trips found at least part of the true essence of Ibiza, which is the shared experience with like minded people.

(sorry for any poor grammer etc but just had to get this done or it wasn't going to happen - thanks for reading)
